I was lucky enough to have two PC6 Porters at my home dropzone here in the USA (Florida) in the 90s. Watching the plane pass me WHILE IN FREE FALL and beat us down was insane.

I created a really good shot, air to air, of a Porter diving close to straight down in the movie 'Drop one'. There's a lot of Porter shots, since it was the main jump plane. I love the PC-6.

I was stationed at Bitburg Air Base from 1988 - 1992 and got the fortunate opportunity to jump out of a porter at Fohren airport near meTrier and they then upgraded to a Cessna Caravan and that also a great plane to jump out of. Great Times!!

Awesome! Such an amazing aircraft, the radio control models of the PC-6 share the same attributes, you can't over speed in a dive with those huge flaps deployed acting like air brakes! Thanks for sharing.

This desire to nose-dive. Is it just a pilot thing?

In Granville France a few years ago, the plane ended in the sea, I didn't see the crash, but I saw the plane release the jumpers and then wondered why it never was seen again....the pilot was rescued, but the plane was lost !

this procedure is correct for following parachuter, and airplane follow and see last parachuter.

Only Prop on reverse during dive makes it possible

Show airspeed and descent rate in fpm please!

actually I wanted to get on a Piper or Cessna flight, so I wasn't prepared - was quite surprised that they offered me to fly on board the PC-6 :P but I'll try to ask at the Airport Office how the airspeed and descent rate was, as this is actually an usual procedure :) I hope I can give the answer soon :)

I wonder if he earned his wings flying Luftwaffe F-104s, everyone II ever observed taking off or landing, the ground was waiting white-knuckled until they were parked..LOL

Why do they do such fast descents?

To get down to fetch the next load of meat bombs.
      Time wasted is time wasted.

To minimise the time between departures and thus earn more revenue from the parachutists.

to add one thing to the others correct info. If the plane has to shutdown then its not optimal. Especially with a turbine aka PC-6. So, they have loads waiting from 9am to sunset.
PC-6's are built to withstand high g's. So the wings are super strong and thus in a dive you can survive by using airbrakes. So they can ride to the edge and turn loads every 15mins maybe.

Basically because it is so much fun and because they can. Before Parachutists found them, Beta allowed you to drop into a ravine and stop on a ridiculously short "airfield" and then throwing it into full reverse thrust, backing up and climbing out again.

Not recommended to parachute onto an airfield with ‘live’ aircraft on it; maybe a tad old school but still actually alive!!
