  • Dog carting with Anya, our 13 month old Belgian Malinois. This walk was about a 1 mile and only her third time pulling the cart. Not yet perfect and barking dogs still distract her, but all in all she's doing great. The perfect protection dog and now she pulls a cart too.
    UPDATE: 12/2018. Just know, we built this cart solely for the benefit of Anya. Being a Malinois, she is so active and high energy, we needed yet another way to fully exercise her. As personal protection dog, she trains regularly, sees her Vet and is in top physical as well as mental condition. I love my dog (maybe more than my daughter) and would never do anything that could even possibly harm her. She is happy, healthy, much loved and well cared for.
    Thank you for your posts...

    Looks like fun, and what a great idea for a dog who needs a job! At about 0:23 I noticed that Anya is "pacing" rather than using an opposing leg gait while walking. When she speeds up, she goes into a proper trot. I had a dog that did the same thing when she relaxed into her slow traveling mode, and this is the first time I've seen another dog do the same thing. Feels weird when you're riding a horse with a pacing gait too. LOL! How are you and Anya doing now? I hope you have many happy carting miles together!

    • @TheDriodGuy
      @TheDriodGuy  5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Anya is almost 3 and is still the best dog anyone could ever ask for, and you are correct about her gait. As the summer heat in So. California makes even the sidewalks too hot for her paws, we are carting her less and less these days, but will be back at it in the fall once the weather cools. Thanks for your comments :)

    I do find it so very strange though, every time i take a US vacation where we rent a house, and just like in this video; no americans go for walks in the neighborhood. its almost creepy how empty the streets seem.
    Here in Canada, in almost any city, in the evenings you will find lots and lots of people out for walks. Do Americans hate exercise that much? or are the neighborhoods so dangerous nobody goes outside normally?

      In general, we're lazy and morbidly obese TV watchers who depend on doctors to save us from diabetes and bury our heads in the sand while our government does immoral things. We eat like the kings of old and to keep us under control, our education and information is the bottom of the barrel. Nothing but lies. So we eat horrible food, live terrible lives, serve evil masters and stay inside to be brainwashed by TV. That's a typical American. There are some exceptions.

    • @Mrjohnnymoo1
      @Mrjohnnymoo1 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      When Americans want to exercise they are very avid in the gym, which means they usually get their work out there. Places like California in the summer really aren't very pleasant for a run, so you have to do it very early in the morning before it gets hot.

    awesome, looks fun. I am designing a folding boat/camper that fits on a cart with bike wheels, but it will have shafts for the dog and higher handles for me (like on hiking carts) so that both my 90 pound coonhound and I will be pulling it together, side by side :) to go on hiking and camping trips together. Making it so it can fold up to 90 degree angle to make a chariot for him to ride in when going through towns, when road too busy, when pavement hot, or when he is tired, haha

    Dump the leather straps on the poles and put some kind of wheels up front -- just my observation that your weight along with the straps cause the poor dog to be jerked on quite a bit. Imagine what would happen if the dog hit a sudden steep down hill bit and he tries to hold the cart back??? Suddenly the straps allow the load to go from rearward to a sudden snap downward and forward with the full weight of you and the cart behind it --- the dog is going down hard and fast, driven into the ground and then rolled and scraped along the ground until you finally roll to a stop.
    If you have no clue about building mechanical devices then for DOG's sake ask for design help. There are good reasons that professional dog harnesses are made the way that they are with poles running along side, and strapped fairly tightly to the dog -- and why 3 or 4 wheel carts are more common. It greatly simplifies the forces of inertia in the design and minimizes the load on the dog.

      @TheDriodGuy  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Dom, There is (almost) no weight supported by the dog and harness as the CG of the rider is centered over the chariot's axel. We also have a chest strap on the harness to prevent the chariot from tipping backwards if the weight suddenly shifts for some reason. It does take some sense of balance to keep the riders weight centered on the axel while riding, but easy to do. Thanks for the comment...

    My dog is an Aussie and German Shepard mix. She is about one year old and is good with things making noise behind her. Do you think she could pull a cart for 50pound kid?

      HorseCrazyKelly. I would think so. As people have commented, there are several things to consider such as the dogs age and type, design of the cart and weight of the rider. We started our dog @ 12 months with an empty card and short walks and worked our way to up to where we are. My dog is a working dog and was in top physical shape when we started, and she lives to please, so it was easy for us. If you decide to start pulling, there are several things I would look at. First; will it benefit your dog? (If not, I would say don't do it). Second; is your dog both physically and mentally ready to start pulling a cart? And last; is it enjoyable for her? I'm no expert, but that was my criteria in deciding to pull and it has worked out great for us. Good Luck...`

    My dog would just run out into on comming traffic. I love her but shes not very smart. Farts alot too. Never feed your dog Chump. Makes them fart like a brewery horse.

    The dog is quite strong

      She weighs 65 pounds and is incredibly strong. That's a trait of the Malinois, but since she trains 5 hours/week as a Personal Protection dog, in addition to all of the exercise and playing she does, she is also in top physical and mental condition. In reality, the cart is very easy for her to pull. Light weight, hard rubber tires, ball bearings and being properly balanced makes it easy for her. The distance she likes to walk is about the same, with or without the cart.
