Archery In the upcoming Robin Hood Movie

  • Usually movie archery is a combination of computer animation and limited knowledge about historical archery, the new Robin Hood movie is different!!
The upcoming Robin Hood movie starring Taron Egerton has been underway for some years now. For me, the journey started in 2015, when Otto Bathurst, the director of the movie, traveled to Denmark to get instruction in the art of historical archery.
I’ve since trained several of the actors in the film, and a couple of them became very good with the bow and arrow. Taron, who plays Robin Hood, might not be able to shoot as well as the legendary archer, but he’s not too far behind.
During the process, I was fortunate enough to be allowed to develop some of the archery tricks that are seen in the movie - something which I’m both proud of, and humbled by.
Together with the researcher Bede Dwyer (the person I know with the most comprehensive knowledge about archery) and Nick “Bigbowbrum” Birmingham, I got the opportunity to influence how archery was portrayed in the film.
( • Robin Hood Origins ) video where Nick Birmingham tells of the long longbow draw)
In order to train the actors, I needed a whole new training system. Taron Egerton especially proved to be a challenge here, since I needed to train him to be able to do amazing shots himself right from the start. The saying was “The less CGI arrows the better”.
Taron worked hard over the course of 2016-2017 to be able to play the part of this “historic super archer”. From the very beginning I had hoped it would be possible to teach him how to shoot incredibly fast, since speed is an essential component of several of the historic archery “expert” systems.
I have made a page about the three historical texts, that allow us to do calculations on speed here: 23.dk/9historis...
As I wanted to document this process, I’ve put together two videos - one that’s fast and dirty and to the point, and the other (much longer!), where we get to geek out and get technical and nerdy about historical archery.
Obviously, even a Hollywood movie has its limitations on budget and what’s possible, but in the end, a lot of what we wanted to do, ended up in the final film.
I hope you’ll enjoy watching this behind-the-scenes footage as much as I enjoyed being there for the making of it.
    FINAL WORDS
Thank you for watching my videos and for reading.
I will remove rude and dumb comments.
I will also remove dumb “archery experts” comments.

Took my time and read some comments of people who seem to be pros, as they have 0 subs. What Lars shows is historically correct, you might simply have to research better sources and not only copy paste some trolls opinion - ofc that is the easiest way. You can find a ton of information about all the shown shooting styles. And then you have the one telling you that all this needs to be performed with only warbows... well. Mostly that comes from people who draw a fifty pounder... Do you guys really think that bow and arrow, the major weapon for thousands of years in all cultures, is only the little you know? Why not simply sit back and enjoy some insane and good archery in the movie?

What Lars does is 'trick shooting' no doubt. But that doesn't make it any less rooted in historically accurate archery traditions. Yes some of his videos make wild claims. But turn off the audio and watch, and his skill is quite amazing.
You won't see him hunting down Buffalo or Elk with the bow he shoots, no. But Archery is more than just hunting.

Well said Armin! It must boil down to the less capable being threatened by the display of real archery skill. haha! Message to the haters out there : Instead why not work to become proficient with varied draw weight bows, and multiple styles of shooting then see what you think??. ...It's incredibly rewarding and fun! Archery in a whole should be supported all around, the rewards of an archery lifestyle are amazing...the negative comments below are ridiculous and cannot be from a true archer in my opinion. Myself and my family will be enjoying this movie! Thank you Lars for opening this up!

Yes, it's enjoyable. Especially as the film does not set out to represent an authentic Mediaeval England , and they do explain that their Robin converts to Eastern archery where such speed shooting was described (though how genuinely common it was I don't know). So there's no question that Lars is good at this type of archery, or that it is genuinely described in old texts. Some archers (including me) have had reservations (still not 'haters' though) because there were claims in the first video that this style is not only authentic but that it is the only authentic style, and things like stationary shooting at round targets, arrow on the left of the bow, back quiver are modern inventions or myths. Lars himself has rightly backed off from those claims since, but some fans still keep that nonsense alive.

No one has a problem with the archery. The story and the style is completely wrong for Robin Hood. Its frankly, cheap, dumb and offensive. Yes the Robin Hood film with Russell Crowe was bollocks too. lol

    • @johnminnitt8101
      @johnminnitt8101 5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

Of course I haven't seen the film, only some clips on TH-cam, so I don't want to be too definite, but I too wonder why it's called 'Robin Hood'? Of course the legend has developed over time, is always changing (for instance the idea of Robin Hood as a crusader is a quite recent addition), but surely the core of it is always a Mediaeval English forest-dwelling outlaw, fighting unjust authority. As is said on this clip it doesn't try to be historically authentic, it certainly doesn't look much like Mediaeval England, the costumes don't either, the archery (while skilful and dramatic) is inspired by a variety of Eastern archery rather than European, and it actually looks quite urban. Not desperately important, it still looks like it could be fun and quite exciting, just a thought.
I agree about the Russell Crowe film in a way, of fairly recent films I prefer the Patrick Bergin one (and the Errol Flynn for sheer style, and good archery, thanks to Howard Hill's contribution).

Some archers ask why not powerful bows in the movie??
Good question but archery in film sets natural limitations.
We recognized from the beginning that the actors will not be allowed to shoot powerful bows in
movie recording it is too dangerous !! and it's also not possible because movie recording consists of making the same movements again and again for hours.
For example. to stand very long with the bow pulled all the way, while the camera and actor moves around and at the same time the actors must remember to say their replies and everything else,
So filming can probably not be done with powerful bows.
Most actors trained with different strength bows and had different for film recordings
The strongest training bows were 80 pound longbows but all the others were less powerful
A war bow is about 80 -160 pounds. Should one be critical is everything less wrong!
A 30 pound is wrong but also a 60 pound is also wrong.
Should the actors have learned to use historical power bows, they would spend at least one year extra just on strength training
and yet they could not use it during movie recording.
    Sincerely
    Lars

I should think anyone who has shot a bow would realise why heavy bows aren't used, but certainly my issue with this video isn't that heavy historical bows aren't used, it's that the director tries to talk up the historical archery angle to sell his movie.
You have always been very honest about your shooting and what you do (which is very much appreciated and endearing), but I don't believe realistic draw weight bows could be shot in the manner seen in the movie, as fast as they do. It's one thing firing off an easy to draw 30lb bow, quite another to believe a 60-90lb bow (that would stand any chance of stopping armoured guards) could be shot twice while spinning in mid air.
However if you would like to make a video showing a heavy draw weight being shot very fast and penetrating different armoured targets in quick succession, I'd watch that over and over, I'd believe that would be more real than this movie make believe.
Just to be clear, what you personally do I find amazing feats of skill, this movie however feels a little cynical, I don't believe you have ever claimed to be an accomplished war archery.

Thanks for the suggestion it's a good idea !
I should show fast shooting with powerful bows and iron armor.
There will be a new series of new short videos coming after these about the Robin Hood movie, but short videos do not allow me to tell.
So maybe I should after the short videos, make a long video afterwards

When it comes to War Archery, look at this documentation of Korean Traditional Archery. It shows, that the original Korean War Bow was much bigger and stronger than the present Korean Traditional Bow. When they had to produce larger amounts of laminated horn bows in the past, they came out probably more rugged, bigger, bulkier, somewhat stronger and durable.
So, i am looking forward to see you making this video with heavy bow and armory.

Lars showed a lot of archery fans what was possible. How true or realistic does not really matter. If someone can hit say three targets with three arrows at once(trick shot),it is also possible(with training, practice etc>)to do it while walking, then running,on horseback etc.The inventor of gunpowder was not the best shot or the Wright brothers the best pilots.Only crazy people are crazy enough to think they can change the world.Much respect and admiration for showing us new moves. Now we must just practice.

    • @johnminnitt8101
      @johnminnitt8101 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Quite right, he performed new and entertaining trick shooting (trick is not a pejorative term, it's used for others doing similar things).
The question of 'realistic' only arises because, firstly, the director while saying that the film is not historically realistic (it certainly isn't) does claim some authenticity for the archery.
Also, of course, Lars in his first video claimed to be restoring historical war archery, he has backed off from those inaccurate claims rather since (to his credit), but some followers still repeat them, even to the foolish extent of saying that this is the only real, authentic, archery.

    • @johnminnitt8101
      @johnminnitt8101 5 ปีที่แล้ว

@@jasonbrand6256 You're right about our lack of knowledge in some areas, especially it's hard to judge how good (accurate) past archers were. I suppose the main people one can say are 'restoring war archery' are the warbow shooters (English Warbow Society eg), using the actual equipment and technique, also probably some of the horse archery people. As far as I can see though the main things that are distinctive (and entertaining and skillful) about Lars have little to do with historical war archery. He is very acrobatic, yet war archery was generally done on a horse or standing, not leaping about (I doubt that anyone could shoot properly a bow heavy enough to be useful in war while doing that|), he is good at hitting moving targets but at closer range that was probably usual in war, and he can shoot very very quickly, which seems to result in the bow being only part drawn when a very long draw was characteristic of most war archery in order to get maximum energy into the arrow for range and penetration.
It is what has been said many times, what he does is fine (apart from the recent 'William Tell' thing), the historical claims are much more dubious.

    • @johnminnitt8101

@@jasonbrand6256 I suppose I am 'biased' to the longbow in the sense that that is what I know, what I have shot, made and studied. Not in the sense that I have any low opinion of other traditions. There may be people in China or Mongolia recreating real war archery (as the warbow people are in England, Wales, Canada etc), I would be interested to hear of them if so. (The 'Way of Archery' channel seems something similar in China, I must look at it more). I don't know that we have more sources for the longbow, considering the old manuals on Saracen, Chinese etc archery. I don't think we know how accurate the best longbow archers were either, there are unlikely stories here too.

OK, this film doesn't claim historical realism (it's more like comic books or gaming than the Middle Ages), but I think the director did claim some sort of authenticity for the archery.
So - Hood is a crusader (why is RH always a crusader nowadays?), presumably the 3rd crusade as that was the main one with English forces (and is the most popular film period for RH). The main battle of that crusade was Arsuf, but the Saracen archery there was pretty ineffective against western armour (mail and padded armour rather than plate at that date). A Saracen writer (Baha al-Din) described crusader infantry marching, unharmed, with up to 10 arrows sticking in their armour.
(Around the same period Giraldus describes arrows from Welsh elm bows effectively piercing English mail armour).
Yet in this film arrows from a (part-drawn) Saracen bow easily pierce plate armour.
Fine, it's not a realistic film, but that applies to the archery too - which doesn't mean it's not skilful and entertaining.
(This is not to criticise all Eastern/composite bow archery. If it had been Mongol or Manchu or Samurai archers at Arsuf maybe it would have been different, but that's not the scenario here).

@@isaiahjoseph8502 I assume you mean they would have done better, rather than been 'legendary' in the sense of exaggerated stories. • @stykface

My wife is Native American and is Comanche. I've read some history books on the Comanche's and there's testimony from Union army members and Texas Rangers and other reliable sources that Comanche's could fire arrows back to back to back to back to back in a rapid fire motion, the first arrow not yet hitting a target the size of an orange, while the last arrow was released, and all arrows would hit the target. They were phenomenal archers and were even more deadly because of their horseback riding skills. They made their bows from the Bois D'arc tree (aka Osage, aka Horse Apple), which is an extremely durable and long lasting wood. I would love to see a movie made that depicted the clash between the Comanches and the early American Texas Rangers - the only force to finally beat the Comanches, only because of two things: 1., to fight exactly like they did and 2., the first rapid fire hand gun, the original Colt Revolver.

One of us would stand in front of a net while the other about 20-25 feet out would take slap shots (hockey) at you. the game was, you had to bat the puck down or deflect it into the net and not get hit. If you jumped out of the way or missed, the person shoot got a point. If you blocked the shot with your stick or deflected it with your stick, you got a point. When we got to adults and could crank our shots over 85 mph - 90 mph, people thought it was insane how good we were at deflecting or batting down incoming shots. Yes, there were times, we tried to kill each other and put everything we had into those shots and drill it through the other brother.

The problem with trying to something like this at an archery club is that shooting like this is dangerous, and people who have never shot a bow before trying to imitate this is dangerous and poses a risk to both the people on the range and the property itself. You would be surprised how many people miss an 80 cm target face from 9 meters away on their first day while standing still and shooting at a still target.

mrTHEsoccerGeeK implying that learning a functional skill in a safe and internationally recognise way isn’t fun or inclusive? I know when I go to archery it’s always a massive chore and I hate it. One of the things I really hate is knowing I’m not going to take an arrow to the back of the head because someone is trying the spinny jump shot, how boring is it knowing your going to make it home after practice? I’m sorry if people’s health and safety is “pretentious” to you, when you aren’t half drawing a low poundage bow, they are really dangerous.

@@ULTRAOutdoorsman so? It's not historically accurate in nothing except archery. Does it matter If there is a black guy teaching archery?

First time I saw the trailer I thought the archery looked very similar to Lars' Arab archery. Now I know it is. Can't wait to see it.

Congratulations, you have earned a place in movie history!
Unfortunately, the trailers I have seen seem to indicate this place will be located somewhere between "Gigli" and "The Last Airbender"

If the goal of this video is to make want to watch the movie, the goal has been achieved: I will definitely go to the cinema to watch the best archery applied into a fiction.
    Well done Lars !

Well done to the effort and commitment to being at least able to do an action in a movie capably! I hate seeing an actor playing the piano when they clearly weren’t!! I can’t wait to see if the rest of the film lives up to the archery skill!

When i was little, i never really liked movies, because a lot of the time, they felt fake, and i hated the actors for it, with all my 6 year old childhood hatred...
But in the last few years, after learning time and time again what kind of extreme effort actors put into their roles... Honestly, respect man.
Especially action movies, especially when played by borderline-suicidal actors like Tom Cruise, holy shit.
If you don't know some of the insane stunts Tom Cruise has done just for the sake of "fuck it, it'll look better", google them, because half of them pretty much weren't even stunts anymore.
