I also have enjoyed watching the channel having no experience as an arborist, but all the stuff I’ve learned gave me the confidence to get some gear and practice for a bit before climbing my first tree yesterday and rigging a large branch overhanging the house down to the ground safely.

@Adam - I think that the only thing I'd say to Adam about the customer questioning (from _'my'_ experience) - don't take it personal - she doesn't know you well enough and, you don't know her well enough, for it to be personal.
_"Do you have experience with ___ type of tree?"_ Yes or, no - simple (go from there).
It's not always immediately apparent whether someone is just _"nuts"_ (as August put it) or, something that logic and reasoning will prevail with - time and experience will help you sort it out easier, next time - don't be a blow-hard or, defensive, offensive - yet, be and remain clam, confident and, competent. I'm glad that you had (and, have) the support of the team and, the resources of an actual leader! Take care-

Adam did right by stepping away from the tree and calling. Explicit knowledge, leadership, and a professional attitude engender confidence. Meet the customer's expectations, and give them what they want. That's the winning formula.

The service of trees is one thing..serving people is altogether different and something even more complicated. It takes good intuition and years of practice. Everything we say (and don’t say) affects the value of the experience for them...and there are easy and harder personalities to deal with that we run into. I’ve learned to never underestimate a “little old lady with a tree trim job”;)

We have had the same situation with apple trees quite a few times. People let them grow wild for 20 years, and then ask ”should we sometimes prune this one? 🤔”. By that time, there’s a million small apples on it but not a single good one…
My old boss always said the following: ”When you are ready with te work, and the lady of the house is crying, you know you did your job right!” 😅.
Had that a couple of times, so I quess I’m pretty good at my work 😂.

Good job teaching the younger guys up. They just need a little more experience with older people. People need to know why , your doing something, not just that your going to do it.
Something ive learned working on equipment. When something breaks. You always look behind in the flow chart. To see if something isnt working right, causing the preceeding part to break.
If your truck has a flat. The problems not you have a flat, but someone spilled a box of nails.

Initial customer apprehension is because of the staff presentation. Truck and equipment look boss but no matter how skillful and experienced the guys are, they don't appear that way by their work clothes. It basically the only thing the customer has the judge until the final product is presented.

People in my area have been burned so many times by unqualified people causing harm to their trees. It puts them on guard from the get go and it takes a bit more to ease their apprehensions. The other problem is exactly what you said. They cut the dead out, but don't address the cause and later the whole tree dies.

If I had a nickel for every time a lady said “Have you ever trimmed a dogwood before?” 🙄. In most cases you are working with something that is the result of a prior trimmer’s decision’s. In each case I always think my time would be better spent crashing some big wood to the ground somewhere else. Then I suck it up and do what needs to be done. Hard to enjoy trimming ornamentals when you have a lot of heavy tree work waiting on you. Maybe a dedicated landscaping/ ornamental crew could be the fix for that. 🙈

An Educated Customer is a good customer. If you are honest, explain what is going on, why something has happened, and what to do about it, Or how your going to address what needs to be done and why, its a good start. In saying that, there is always someone who will be unreasonable, or will not listen, either due to their bully personality, or they may have been ripped off before, and trust and respect is earned over time, so you have to start again from scratch. Either way, be honest, explain whats going on, or will need to be done, and go from there.

@@AugustHunicke Really, so spurs for pruning don't hurt the tree that bad? Spurs are so much more convenient. Are some species okay to spur for pruning, and others not?

You will find spurs are not more convenient for pruning most of the time. There are many factors to consider and I was speaking in a general way. I’m going to quiet down on this topic before the zealots show up. 😁

Hey, really off topic, but what was the name of the equipment financing company you mentioned a while back? I remember you had good things to say about them, but I can’t for the life of me remember their name or what video it was in. Thanks in advance!

Girdling roots, restricted phloem layer and uptake problems take years to understand. No worries Adam. Adventitious roots develop because the trees need those ray cells. Airspade work is highly profitable and teaches the crew all about girdling roots and how they develop. Thanks for the excellent content, as always

Hey guys, I have a question..my english is not the best so i am not sure if I got it right.
Did he use the bike air pump to fill the air cannon for the third shot or did he used an aircompressor?
I bought a similar looking cannon and it could only shoot about 15 meters high. This one was absolutely shit. I need to shoot very high and only want to use a bike air pump. Do you have any tips or explanations? Thanks!

You need a better pump. Minimum 180 psi

It's worse if you are in to prune fruit trees that have been neglected. The amount that has to be cut out to restore the tree freaks the customer.
