The load lifters are to keep the top of your pack closer to your upper back/ shoulders so the weight isn’t pulling you back. This helps keep the weight over your hips. In a lot of your thru hike videos it looked uncomfortable because it looked as if your pack weight was pulling back away from your shoulders. Also, if your torso size of the pack is not the proper size for you, the load lifters can’t do their job. I’m sure you know this but you could have customized your ULA circuit more to your liking. As far as colors, material, Y shaped strap etc..

Perfect. Not a lot of stats, not a lot of marketing, just what worked for you and what didn’t without droning on for an hour..! We need more gear review videos to follow your example.

I enjoy your videos. I have the circuit also . It cost like 80 dollars but you can send your pack into ULA and have dual top compression strap and a foam pad / tent on the bottom of the pack . It was worth the 80 dollars to me 👍Good luck on your new adventures.

Your review was from the viewpoint of the user and I enjoyed your observations. You are quite right about the specs if anyone is interested in them, go to the websites. You could include links to the webpages of the retail or manufacturer's descriptions.

Great video, as always. I love my Circuit. I love the load lifters, large pockets, the mesh you can't see through, and the shock cords. It carries so much better for me than any other ultralight I've tried (the GG Mariposa caused me great pain to carry). I did buy a lumbar pad for the Circuit. I have a short torso with a big curve in my lower back. I guess it's like shoes, everyone's body and preferences are different.

RR! Your review is the best because it's based on your own experience--and that's a lot more valuable to me than the line from the technical people. I came to your video from having been playing along on the fiddle with some other clips, and I forgot I had the speed set to 1.5x, and it took me a minute to figure out what the heck was wrong with the way you were speaking, heh! Great video as always :)

You can easily add Velcro strip to the Circuit roll top.

Nice comparison! My HMG 70 seems to be quite water resistant. It poured for a few days on us on the FHT and I didn’t see any water intrusion. I was so impressed. Love this pack so much! It’s very comfortable. I will say, I guess as to be expected, it carries a bit differently whether I’m carrying a bear can vs a bear bag.

If you sew, or know someone that does, or even a commercial business, have them replace the fishnet material on the dyneema bag with the lycra stretch like you have on the Circuit. I bought my stretch fabric at Joannes pretty cheap. Its also lightweight. Leave the edging on the fishnet areas. Sew the stretch material to the edging of the fishnet (after you cut the fishnet out.) That way you dont affect the dyneema water-proofness by sewing into it. Then you'll love the dynerma one even more. Its really not as hard as im probably making it sound. Lol. 😊

    • @gypsygirl6887
      @gypsygirl6887 ปีที่แล้ว

Or.. contact the company for your dyneema pack and see if they'll do it for you. I'm not sure what materials they use, what the cost would be or shipping fees etc.

Did they not have the ULA in Ultra 200X material when you purchased yours?

  • @gregmortonoutdoors

The big reason why I didn't go with a Hyperlite is the lack of load lifters. For me, I enjoy pulling the pack closer. The ULA straps look like S straps which are normally for people with a broad chest or shoulders. The J strap would have worked well for you. I agree with you on the hip belt straps. Have four places to adjust the belt is just a pain in the butt if you loosen the straps when you take off the pack. My current pack has the same thing and it's annoying.
Maybe it's time to look into a more customizable cottage company pack?

Love a good realistic review. It's weird what we like/dont like and how it's so individual. Dont you wish you could mix and match across manufacturers!? The perfect pack doesn't exist! But i like both of those packs.

Great review!! I've been trying to make a decision between these 2 exact packs. I purchased a ULA Circuit, tried it on, felt pretty good, and sent it back, because I'd want to have it in the X-PAC material, add a bottom strap, etc. Now I'm thinking that I should do the same with the Hyperlite. That way I'll have a fair comparison. BTW, where did you get that huge map of the AT behind you, with the empty space in the middle for you to add your own picture? I absolutely love it.

You gave good and bad equally on both packs. I like the load lifters on the ULA but would prefer wider belt on the ULA.

Right off the bat you have a talent that i wish i could have you are a heck of drawer!! Thats crazy impressive!!! I can barely draw stick figures lol. You should show off that talent on here as well. And i think you did very well on your presentation of the 2 bags. Personally im a use decathlon bags i have the Forclaz Men's MT100 Easyfit 70 L Backpacking Pack The MT100 only weighs 4.2 lbs and can contain a total volume of 70 liters. Its a very interesting pack. But you got to remember im carrying 30 pound of stuff. Lol i have no idea how anyone does the ultralight packing its crazy to me. But i think you did a great job on this video!!!

4.2 lbs? Amateur! Those are rookie numbers. Try 7.8 lbs. That's my Wisport Raccoon 85 ltr. It's a real back-breaker.

I have a Z packs Ultra 70 liter pack, which interestingly is the smalles of my packs, and then the Hyperlitemountaingear Southwest 55 and 70 liter packs. I'm considering returning the two Hyperlite packs ( bought at REI) due to the fact that they don't have load lifters. I can't live without those and still hike comfortably. Unless one over does it, the load lifters don't change the distribution I find, but move the weight close or further for hiking at different slopes. Were I to do it all over again, I'd buy the Durston pack, if they ever get back in stock. Cheaper, load lifters, stronger and more abraision resistant material than Dyneema and similarly water resistant. The water can only come in through the stiching, but if I really care about that, I'd seam seal the outisde surface. But I keep my down stuff in dymema roll top stuff sacs. I find that I don't like the netting on the outside pockets ( which is why I chose the Southwest style) and if there is anything wet I need to dry, I hang it from a strap on the outside.
It's good to hear your views about these backpacks - I"m sure it helps many, many people.

Because I live in Indianapolis and my son is in LA,, the ULA Camino, which is designed to strap down to be a carry on pack for flying with gear. Best pack I have owned in forty years of section hiking AT and now the western trails.
