Edsel Ford, the son of Henry Ford, did not start his own car company. Edsel worked for Ford, and was mainly interested in selling, while his dad Henry was more of an engineer. Edsel died of an illness in 1943, whle still middle-aged. The Edsel car was named in honor of him, and it was introduced in the fall of 1957 (for the 1958 production year) as a division of Ford Motor Company.
My dad's sister bought a new 58 Edsel 4 door hard top. They brought me home from the hospital, when I was born, in that car. It was about 3 months old. My cousin had a 2 door hard top. I drove his car in 1977.
What a beautiful sharp lookn car, now let's see you do a 1958 EDSEL CITATION 4DR HTP GREEN/WHITE. Those had the E 475/410 engine, this one you just did had the E 400/361engine, EXCELLENT JOB!! 🤠👋😁👍THANKS FOR SHARING THIS WITH ME 😁😉👍 more please.
I am just starting. 49 Ford coupe. Gonna try the salt method for rusty rat Rod. But everything else is gonna be nice. I also want to put more time into the engine with plug, battery, brake and fuel lines. And try flocking the headliner and floor. I want this one to be awesome. Subbed
Beautiful work! You have many great ideas for superior modeling. I did what seemed like dozens of these models when I was a youngster. You gave me some great modeling tips here that never occurred to me. Also, the Edsel Pacer and Ranger shared engines with Ford; it had the FE series 292 ci. The Citation and Corsair shared power plants with Mercury. One of the failings of the Edsel was that FOMOCO wanted it to be too many things to too many financial levels of buyers in an already over crowded market.
Wow! It turned out really great. I have never put in the effort of masking the car body to spray the chrome trim but instead use a molotow pen but you did a great job!
I have the first issue of this kit from 2000 - the one with the Continental kit came a bit later. Lovely well detailed kit, but the quarter windows at the front are finicky (I lost one) and there was no tie rod for the front axle. You've actually put it in the same color scheme I used for mine, and my kit had the full list of colors available for the car in the instructions. Bringing back lots of memories here!
Just a bit of Edsel trivia, the motor & transmission were designed for Edsel, the "FE" motor & the FMX 3 speed transmission. Edsel failed epically, but the powertrain components were used through the 60's on the full sized Fords. The motor was the base of the epic 427 wedge. So, maybe Edsel wasn't the total failure after all.... BTW, great model. Colors great, nice assembly & I like how you tied the chrome together.
I truly believe there is still money to be made making after market parts for car scale models. If I had the knowledge and abilities, I would do it in a heartbeat. The street tires on the AMT 67 Chevelle are beautiful. If ONLY they could be packaged in a blister pack, and alot of other parts that could be made at a reasonable price. Paying $30+ for a car model engine is ridiculous. Hopefully something good will come from people staying at home more cuz of the Covid-19. Young ,and older men will put down the stupid Xboxes and build a scale model . Car,Military aircraft civilian aircraft tanks, ships, whatever ! Games are fine but people get wayyyyy too obsessed with these games. Anyway, sorry for my rant . Keep on building! Lol 👍✌
Your Edsel turned out beautiful! I hate to be critical, but I was a little surprised you didn't color key the wheel covers. A little blue would look great. On a historical note, Edsel died in 1943. He really had nothing to do with the Edsel car. He was considered a man of great taste. Not sure he would have appreciated his name on that car! But I still like Edsels.
I haven’t been able to rattle can anything in house yet as my diy spray booth only has a 100cfm fan. Just bought a 490cfm 6” fan with variable speed control upgrade yesterday. That should work. Can’t paint outside as our winters are brutal here in Alberta Canada.
Actually lots of trim on cars isn't chrome; it's stainless steel or aluminum. By stripping the chrome and using chrome paint you make the model look more realistic! Amazing job, by the way! ;-) This kit was originally issued in the early 1990s. They had them at Toys R Us with a mistake on the price, they were selling for $3.33. I think it was supposed to be $9.99, so I bought a few of them! The engine was one of Ford's FE series V8s, so it was used by all other big Ford cars including Mercurys and Lincolns, in various cubic inch displacements. Of course they had unique valve covers identifying the different cars ("Ford, " "Mercury," etc) but they were basically the same engine.
My favorite model channel. Love your attitude and easy going manner. The topic of chrome matching is valid and I agree that the majority of kits are over the top with the chrome finish. Very difficult for the builder. Your airbrush technique is strong but I question why use rattle can white? I am late to the party on this one but enjoyed it very much. Very nice subject executed with a high degree of skill.
Nice looks good the amt ertl kits are very detailed yup Edsel was a two year run because of bad sales they kept the motors which later became the fe which means ford edsel which became the 352,360 ,390, and 427 so fords big block lineup
wow nice henry fords great grandson just put on auction curious how much it brang in ooh look a wagon luv me some station wagons thanks for sharing scooter d
Edsel did do some car designs, in the 1920's and '30s. But He died in If I remember correctly, in 1941. The Edsel cars of 58/60. Were not very popular when they were in production.
Fantastic! Would really like to see your fitting and gluing techniques (especially windows and small pieces). You mentioned some of the parts didn't fit in this kit. How do you finagle them together? Thanks for filming; really informative and fun!
The 1958 Edsel had to engines. The Models were Ranger, Pacer, Corsair, and Citation. They had 2 engines. One was a 361 Cubic Inch, and the other was a 410 Cubic inch. I hope this will help you a bit. Thanks for the build. I enjoyed watching you build the kit. One question I have was I was wondering why you did not use Chrome foil on the kit. Thanks again.
Wow! The Edsel turned out amazing. The spray chrome looks like alot more work but definitely worth it. I was wondering if you have seen a kit for a 1957 Oldsmobile 88. I would love to have one
Yes Edsels and Chrysler products of the Vintage had Pushbutton Controlled Automatic transmissions. Chrysler products had pushbuttons on the dash. While it was really odd Edsels were in Center of Steering wheel !! Damn what a nightmare mechanically speaking. Pushbutton trans controls put off most of buying public hence Chrysler absndoned the design in 65
Awesome job! I’m doing two Edsel pacers right now. I have two questions for you. How do glue parts on without the paint coming off from the glue? My other question is how did you put the small windows on? The first time I tried the paint got all over the small windows when I glued them on.
Thanks!! So if I'm gluing painted parts I use super glue. It doesn't break down the paint. I only use model cement on non painted parts. As far as windows go I use testors clear window glue. It dries crystal clear and doesn't break down the paint. I'm still learning just like you. Every kit I learn a little bit more. Don't let it frustrate you.😉
@@modelcarvideos5829 do you have any videos of you sanding a model car? I painted my Edsel model car and had some paint runs from to much paint. Any advice about sanding them off and how make look great?
The company wasn’t founded by Edsel Ford, in the ‘50s Ford executives wanted to start a new brand that would fit between Mercury and Lincoln in their lineup and after a comically long research for a name they decided to use the Edsel name. At that time Edsel Ford was already death.
Edsel was just a Ford model; Edsel did not start his own company. It shared most parts with Ford/Lincoln/Mercury except body panels and one engine. That engine was the 410cid, 375hp, 475 ftlb "Edsel-475"(probably the one in this kit, available only in '58). The buttons on the steering wheel are the telemotor controls for shifting the transmission. The car did not fail because of its looks but because it was another big, high-end car among many, introduced at the start of a recession in the late 50's. That and Ford's marketing was tone-deaf.
I would like to find a 1958 Ford Edsel 2-door hardtop coupe a 4-door hardtop coupe and a Ford Edsel station wagon to add to my model car collection. Could someone please let me know just were I could find the a.m.t. model car replica kit of the 1958 Ford Edsel!..... .
Nice job! You're good with bare metal foil for the chrome stripping and windows. Did you use Pledge for coating the windows or polishing them? Nice big stash by the way and you have a lot of built ones so you're not one of these guys who buys but doesn't build!
Are the model car replica kit's of the a.m.t. 1958 Ford Edsel still available to purchase or buy? Because I would like to add a couple of these a.m.t. Ford Edsel model car replica kit's to my model car replica collection.
It still surprises me how the Edsel failed. I don’t think it’s a bad looking car, it just happened to be sold at the wrong time. If it was sold five years earlier, maybe Edsel would’ve lasted longer than just the couple years.
I made a BIG MISTAKE when starting this kit. I bought a $28. Photo etch upgrade kit for this Edsel kit and it's holding up the entire build cuz of many questions I have that I simply cannot find. Another thing . The photo etch parts are soooooo tiny. Imagine holding a car ignition key to a 1/25 scale car. That's how small these parts get. I am NOT a Japanese wristwatch repair dude. Lol. I have big mitts . All I can do is my best.
Very nice build. Gotta correct you though. Edsel was dead 10 years before a ford committee, not Henry the second, Edsels son, decided to name Ford's new product Edsel. Also that is very very much a 9". And yes, I own a '58 Pacer.
I owned a 1959 Fairlane as a daily driver around 20 odd years ago. Miss that car so much.
So cool!!

Wow! Rustoleum chrome paint -- that was amazing.
Thank you eottoe2001 !!👍👍
I’ve never seen anyone apply chrome like that. I’ve never thought about using a spray can before. Excellent work!
spaz sticks has a mirror chrome finish kinda pricey but you get a lot

👍🏻👍🏻
Great build, blue with white is an awesome color combo.
Never thought of doing chrome that way, I use foil.
But awesome masking job.
Thanks!!👍🏻👍🏻

Gonna try the salt method for rusty rat Rod.
But everything else is gonna be nice.

That should look cool!!👍🏻👍🏻
You are a MASTER BUILDER, and this was a pleasure taWATCH ... I use to build model cars in my teens, but you put me to shame!!! ~~
The buttons on the steering wheel was the push button shift for the transmission I believe
That's Correct only EDSELS had them on Steering Wheels
GORGEOUS!! Looks all ready for Junior Sample's Used Car Lot.. Just call BR-549 LOL!!
Looks beautiful ....
I find masking quite enjoyable.
Awesome dude,, love the Edsel and your commentary is both informative and funny,,, don't change a thing
Thanks Don!!
Just bought this model this past week. Hope it turns out ok.
Looks good MATTHEW 👍
I love the Edsel, great job Matt.

That is beautiful. Ron
Ron, I have always painted that chrome over gloss black paint!! Try it on a spoon to see if you like it!!!!
Great job on the edsel. Interesting way to apply chrome.
Another nice build. Front seat would be called a 60/40 split bench
Excellent build... Looks real..!
Thanks!!
wow another awesome video! great build.

The engine is a 361 cuin FE serie.E 400 is the tourqefigure. 400 Ib-ft and 303 hp. Nice build.😀
You are a goddess. We are not worthy.
Interesting chrome idea. I love me some bare metal foil. A fingerprint is going to come out when you polish it.
Sweet build! Love the colors. Your builds are so clean looking!
Thanks Chris I really appreciate it!!👍🏻👍🏻
Looks great! I need to do that chrome method for some of my builds. 😎👍🏾

Excellent build, whats the tune at the end?...
Some copyright free music I found. Its no name.

Yeah I need to film the small stuff. Thanks for watching!👍👍
Great job,one question. Hope did you paint the small writing "Edsel and Pacer " on the sides ?
Tiny paint brush.
33:16-Impressive.!
Thanks

👍🏻👍🏻
How does liquid mask work for you ?
I am experimenting with it on a junker.
Ive never used it on a model car. Used it a long tome ago on some lexan rc bodies but that was 30 years ago. Let me know how it turns out.
Wow! The Edsel turned out amazing. The spray chrome looks like alot more work but definitely worth it. I was wondering if you have seen a kit for a 1957 Oldsmobile 88. I would love to have one
Every time you use the Exacto knife to remove the tape my heart skips a beat- use a toothpick instead and save my life
Awesome
Greetings from the UK. Great video, very therapeutic to watch! Out of interest how did you remove the chrome plating from the chrome parts?
I soak them in purple power cleaner!!
The buttons in the steering wheel was the automatic transmission
Fantastic build, one question what is the blue that you used did you decant some Rustoleum?
Yes Edsels and Chrysler products of the Vintage had Pushbutton Controlled Automatic transmissions. Chrysler products had pushbuttons on the dash. Go to auto zone and by automotive trim paint it is black satin looks just like chassi black it looks more realistic on the wheel wells and frame.
My buddy had a 59 Edsel stock his came with the 289. cool thing is his key was shaped like the grill
No he didnt 289 came out in 64
Great job! Would you recommend this way of painting chrome or use foil? I think this looks more realistic
I just started using foil and its pretty good too. At this point I'm not sure which is best. The foil is still a bit too bright.
Lovely build.
What issues did you have with the paintwork?
Did you have to start all over again?
No if I recall the clear coat didn't adhere and all peeled off so I just rolled with it.
Nice
Thanks Pat! That one was from way back!
Very elegant car but I think the continental kit would have made it look nicer.
Awesome job! I’m doing two Edsel pacers right now. I have two questions for you. How do glue parts on without the paint coming off from the glue? My other question is how did you put the small windows on? The first time I tried the paint got all over the small windows when I glued them on.

The seat color should be a shade different next time take the body color and add a touch of black to darken it so it's more realistic looking.

Hello!
The engine was a 312.
Good job but Bare Metal Foil would be much easier 😃
Love the videos, don't like the music volume change.
That's an old video so things have changed since then.
Never shows the back of all models that finished.
a Ford 400" V8
