They each had a sacrifice prepared on an altar and would have to call upon their gods to bring the fire down. The prophets of Baal obviously sat there for hours with nothing happening. Then Elijah said “watch this” 😉 and drenched his offering in water and then called upon God who then sent a fire down that completely consumed the sacrifice, alter and water.

God gave Elijah instructions to drench the alter and the sacrifice in water multiple times and to stand back and watch that He alone would still ignite the fire and burn the offering. Awesome story.
