    For your edification...
    Years ago some friends decided to get a pair of geese. They were excellent pets until they matured and made it their life's work to kill everything in sight.- other animals, small children, large adults and anything else that moved. After discovering that the local animal control and wildlife centers wanted nothing to do with domesticated/homicidal geese, they put them in the back of the family station wagon and drove 86 miles to a small lake and released them. Upon arriving back home they were greeted by...
    the geese.
    Good luck.

    As someone that works as a Chicken farmer and used to have geese let me give you 2 tips on them:
    1.ALAWAYS keep the geese and chickens separate as geese carry illneses that can kill all of the chickens in a matter of days and dont let them use the same water.
    2.Geese dont get in or drink water if its dirty so keep it clean as much as you can.
    I wish you good luck with the chickens and geese.

  • @KelikakuCoutin
    @KelikakuCoutin 2 ปีที่แล้ว +106

    I used to keep a pair of ducks, and had to clip one of their wings. They could still catch air, but couldn't stay aloft that way. You only have to clip out the middle "flight" feathers, and leave the tips and the base feathers. It's pretty straightforward, if the birds are tame like yours seem to be. A bath towel over the head will do the trick if they're struggling too much.
    Thanks for the content.
    Keep up the good work.

      We tried clipping the wings of our birds a few years ago and it worked on most of them, but a few determined ones just flapped harder and got over the fence anyway. Now we just clip one wing on each bird and it works much better.

    • @ajorsomething4935
      @ajorsomething4935 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      It's not really a good idea to do a clip where you don't take off flight feathers. Having a bird that can get off the ground but can't really glide and land gracefully is a bit of a problem.

    • @Perennial_Curiosity
      @Perennial_Curiosity 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@ajorsomething4935 I honestly don't remember what all the feathers are called, but we clip the 'finger' feathers (the ones on the end that animated birds always use as fingers) and then a few extra on the end of the wing. Probably 6 or 8 feathers in total. I've never noticed our birds having an issue when jumping off of something and landing. I will watch for that tomorrow though. Thanks for the heads up!

    In my country, there is a neat trick we use to keeps the geese in place, it did not need a cage at all. Put ropes/strings around an area, at their chest height. They will not cross it or cant cross it. If want to use mesh as their cage, do it just their chest height, will get the same result. But the rope/string looks a bit cooler.

    My wife took us from 0 chickens to 40 chickens in about 6 months. It's been a mad dash to build coops and get them ready for winter. Our Bard rock's are the friendliest birds in our flock as well. I don't know if it was the TSC setting they started in, or just a natural temperament. If you're having a bunch of problems with loss to predators, I would suggest a livestock guardian dog. We have an anatolian shepherd that watches over the chickens and we haven't had any loss from predators, nor even seen them on the property. Looking forward to seeing the new coop and your ideas for easy maintenance.

Not the cheapest solution but it works incredibly well it drastically improves the smell and water clarity. Still doesn't filter out everything, and we probably will need to drain, clean a re-fill the pond every few years or so.

Maybe yours are tame and friendly to people but I remember getting nipped by geese we had on the farm and they're just vicious - they grab, pinch, and twist. If they managed to get a good hold on you, they start shaking back and forth like a terrier. You learn quickly to always wear jeans - there is no such thing as "shorts weather" when those honking demons are trying to rip the skin off your legs!

    We just got a house with an acre of land, and I'm fairly sure this is a preview to our future ;) I hope you'll share a video when you figure out how to keep the pond from being stanky!

    You could use an electric blanket maybe for the bird house. Connected to a thermostat. They are reasonably safe and washable.

    To be fowl... I just have to leave a poultry comment like a Goose has to defend itself. I'm glad to see you not chickening out from sharing with us, your honking fine gobble gobble content. I hope that your fine flock remains perfectly ducky! Good luck on making them a coop Deville. Hopefully, no one has cringed so hard that they turned into an egg. And like that possible gander... no, I'm not sorry. 🤣🤣🤣
