    She's got the big technique needed for this suite, but she's also got something more important: There's an elegance to this interpretation that is all too rare. These pieces don't have to be a bang-fest from start to finish, and for once it's possible to imagine them in the hands the pianist for whom Stravinsky made the arrangement, Arthur Rubinstein. I learn from performances like this.

    I think part of the beauty of this reading is the fact that it is unhurried. You get to hear the detail of the music. Many performers try to impress you will how difficult it is. But Ms. Son, as usual, goes straight for the music.

    I am dazzled. Of Stravinsky, I only have heard to Yeol Eum Son The Rite of Spring, which is already a challenge, and do so with the greatest brilliance. But now, this Petrouchka confirms me without any doubt, that Yeol Eum performs the best Stravinsky I've ever heard.
    I know well this work since, still very child, I heard play it in a recital, to legendary Nikita Magaloff in Madrid. This work, as can be seen from the first note, is of a maximum difficulty and Yeol Eum plays it supremely well. On the one hand, the rhythmic and timbric power, wild jumps, extremely fast double scales, performed with an absolute perfection, spectral glissandos ... and all this without ever losing musicality, cleanly expressed. Moreover, and I don't tire of saying it, the magic that Yeol Eum creates in those slow passages, pianissmo, interspersed with 'eloquent' silences of a mysterious poetry... I adore her.

    • @republiccooper
      @republiccooper 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      pianoforever100 I know it from playing it and I can say that Son Yeol Eum has mastered it, tamed it, and imbued it with grace and beauty like no other artist I have heard before.

    • @janicezany
      @janicezany 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Funny - I don't at all - hear it as "heavy." However, when the score (composer)calls for RICH fortissimos and sforzandos, Yeol Eum can 'measure' her strength of attack to avoid just that kind of 'banging.'

      완벽한 기교를 바탕으로 이렇게 여유롭고 우아하게 페트루슈카를 표현해는 연주는 손열음 피아니스트 연주 뿐입니다.
      폴리니연주 굉장히 명쾌하고 정확하지만 페트루슈카가 발레음악임을 감안하면 손열음의 연주가 스토리텔링에 더 근접한 연주가 아닌가 생각합니다.

    Yeol is a phenomenal artist. She is already "embracing" a full career. She is young and (I fear) a bit inexperienced in "artistic" life.
    When massively talented classical pianists (like her) start their career, they tend to go to bombastic works like the Stravinsky above that she does so amazingly well. Problem is, they are not just "hard" but also "hard" on her equipment (hands and wrists).
    I hope she reads this post. She should "ration" her bombastic works (like the 5 Prokofiev concertos) and do them only a few times during the year. Same with the Stravinsky above. She should try to avoid glissandi and works that require enormous pounding.
    She is stuck with Rach 3. Every great pianist is expected to play it, literally everywhere. But it is also horribly demanding and exhausting.
    Yeol, NOW is the time to start taking care of your "equipment." If you do not, you risk losing half of your career at the beginning. Drink a lot of fluids and don't "over-travel." Your concert reps want you to take every concert offered, because you both make more money that way. Trust me: Take care of yourself FIRST.

      @Peter-tz6rx 8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      +San Jose Mike-Agree wholeheartedly. She would also do well with soft tissue/fascia and mobility work for all her joints, to complete the hydration cycle from drinking plenty of fluids per your suggestion....What a talent and hopefully will have many, many more years of joyful playing.

    I had always though Yeol Eum Son was just a "good brown soul" who had made an earnest study of the piano, but didn’t have much talent for communicating the beauty and the magic of the literature. I had dismissed her as a “competent, but dull also-ran." Well, I was WRONG. The girl has matured tremendously and turned herself into one of the world’s top virtuosi. Not only that, she infuses this BEAST of a piece with astounding sensitivity and finds music in it I never even suspected was there. I don’t really care for these Stravinsky transcriptions, but I found myself listening to this marvelous realization with great interest. A MAGNIFICENT achievement.
