    I think that trainer could make the girls progress very quickly if she was their trainer frequently

    I think this is a bit of a rude awakening for them. As someone who shows in the 3'6 jr hunters nationally and has been showing at these big shows that Gabby says she wants to do, I hate to say it but they will never get there without a trainer like that. I have trained with many top trainers and token clinics from others, and thats how you get better, by getting VERY constructive criticism. If they want to bop around the 2'-2'6 forever they can continued to be babied by their trainer at home but if they actually want to show nationally they need a trainer who is harder on them (like harder than Brandan).They need the fundamental flat work that she taught

      Eva Mazzola Kailey jumps the same heights as you with the same trainers as Gabby and has no issues in doing so. Just because you prefer a critical harsh trainer does not mean every well trainer equestrian has or needs one.

    • @evamazzola1828
      @evamazzola1828 4 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      Alyssa Farrelly i am talking more about at horse shows against the “A” and “AA” show competitors in rated divisions (which when they talk about attending trillium or doing the pony hunters thats what they will encounter). Yes Kailey may be able to jump a 3’6 verticle but that is very different then doing the medal/maclay

      @@evamazzola1828 I totally agree with you. I think Kailey especially (and Gabby soon too) has outgrown her current trainers. Which is never a bad thing! It's all part of learning and growing. It doesn't mean they have to part ways with their current trainers...they still do well with Sophie, and Laura, and will be great for Laura's grandkids in the future. But for the older girls, as they are almost in high school, I think it would be the perfect time to make a switch. That happened to me when I was about their age (not with riding, a different private lesson situation) and my teacher actually told ME it was time to branch out and move up, much as they loved having me as a student.

  • @Libbyjp

    I wouldn't blame the girls for disliking it since the way they have been trained is completely different but soon I think they'll start enjoying it. But I think they need to trust what the trainer is saying because she knows what she is doing ❤️

    My old trainer was very rough and impatient, but she made me always want to do my best! Also, praise meant so much more from her. Sometimes the hardest trainers are the ones that teach you the most!

    my old trainer was the same as theirs currently, very caring and doesn’t yell or get mad and very calm in general and took me very slow. we did some clinics and i thought the man was so mean and pushed us too much and he made 2 girls cry bc he was so hard on us. we continued to do clinics, and we all disliked him. like a year later he became our trainer for our team and we ended up LOVING him because i rode for 10 years, and for those 8 years i was still very very low level. the next 2 years with the very hard trainer that pushed us, i moved up so many levels and became so much better than i could ever imagine.

    Clinics with a variety of professional coaches are valuable tools. If you are lucky enough to be able to participate in a clinic or even just to audit you will learn so much.
    The shouting is more for the people auditing so they can also hear what the coach is saying. Do not take it personally.

    This type of trainer is completely essential for the girls if they want to move up levels and start competing at rated shows. My old trainer was extremely strict but she was also very rewarding and taught me so much. Trust me it’s hard going from a trainer that sugar coats everything, to one that actually corrects you and makes you work hard, and will make you do the course over and over again until it’s better, but it is worth every second!

  • @isaequestrian9752
    @isaequestrian9752 4 ปีที่แล้ว +13

    I like the trainer actually. I think that this is the type of trainer that the girls could progress with and do some winning at bigger shows. I like fiona as a trainer too, but she does seem like more of a beginner trainer. I don’t think there’s anything wrong with the girls riding with fiona, but they would definitely become stronger riders faster with a tougher more advanced trainer like this trainer

  • @mallie249
    @mallie249 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I really liked the clinic trainer! She is the type that really gets results because she drives her riders. Taking lessons with different trainers is SO important. Your guys’ usual trainers are great, but it’s also super beneficial to take lessons with a few other trainers ever so often!

  • @sha_moo
    @sha_moo 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    This is the coach they need! I bet if they had a year of lessons with this coach they will double their current ability. I know these instructors seem mean at first but honestly you’ll thank them in later years as they will teach you the most. I really recommend you guys stay with this instructor even if it’s a once a month lesson coz you’ll learn so much more. But for the first lesson you guys did alright so good job!! Edit: I’m glad you like her laura and agree that she’s good!!

  • @nadiabishop5650
    @nadiabishop5650 4 ปีที่แล้ว +24

    She sounded like a tough coach! The girls are still pretty young and it’s a different experience to go to an outside lesson from your regular program... when your older and you pay for your own lessons you learn to love a tough coach haha you really feel like you get your monies worth of feedback and criticism 😂 most instructors have something to offer even if you don’t love everything about their style it’s still good to go to other people because they might just say one thing that helps you and it’s still worth it!

    I take clinics all the time at my barn, and I have learned that they are yelling to get your attention and make sure they are heard instead of trying to be mean. They really want you to succeed and they are this way for that purpose. I had a clinician named Jim Graham, he was one of the most tough clinicians I have ever gone too, but I learned the most from him. The girls did amazing!!

    What seemed great about the trainer is she recognised a couple of problems and focused on those, the main one being to get Storm moving forward, which I really think is key with him, for all disciplines, so not just jumping. You really have done a lot in terms of making sure he’s physically ok..shoeing, chiropractor, custom saddle etc, however if a horse isn’t really interested and cut out to do certain things, then there’s a limit to what you can do, so it’s about getting the best out of what you have 😊 It definitely seems that keeping Storm fresh and mixing up what you do with him works and as you said Laura, trying to get out more on the trail with him would probably be a good thing 👍 I noticed she mentioned medication, did she say what she meant? I wonder if a joint supplement might be worth considering as he starts to get older, just a thought and continuing with doing the stretches etc with him in between the chiropractor visits.
    I know it was tough for Gabby and Kayleigh, however a really good experience and although they might not be feeling it now, I’m sure when they reflect on what the trainer was saying they’ll realise the benefits, much better to have someone trying to help you and offer an honest critique and ways to help, than just saying everything is good and complimenting everything ( although not always easy to hear) 😊 it will be interesting to hear what Brandaan and Fionna think of the advice 🤔

    i think kailey is taking corrections a little bit too much to heart. i wouldn’t want to train her based off this video. she doesn’t take the crit well AT ALL. she’s mad about normal corrections. the trainer is helping. i also tell my lessons to shorten their reins and put their hands forward. it lets you keep contact but also send them forward. if your reins are too long you have to pull back way farther and throw yourself off balance to engage the reins at all. also, contact is good. tex isn’t moving properly, and she should be working on getting him to accept and relax into the contact. whether it’s a bit issue, rider issue, teeth issue, etc. that’s not the trainers fault and should be something she’s working on with fiona as well🤷🏼‍♀️ gabby seemed a little bit more of a good sport about it, but also most trainers will yell. she yelled even when they did something good, i don’t think she was meaning to scream at them, it was just her “trainer voice”.

    Laura, I get what you are saying about Storm he’s a basically a pleasure horse born and bread. You can’t really expect Storm to be energetic and ready to go go go it’s not in him. Chino is an Appendix he’s more of a hunter jumper horse two totally different breeds of horses.

    Cathy Inch has been in the game a long time. Took clinics with her in school back in 2002. She has mounds of knowledge and the girls should be very thankful for parents who want to pay for a learning moment like this. If Gabby wants to show Trillium she needs the technique and discipline. Horse and rider need to be in shape to do the job. Trillium shows are long days and hard work. She got a taste of what’s to come. 😊

    Every trainer has a different point of view because everyone teaches differently so they were probably just taught differently! Find someone that you’re comfortable with for all the time lessons but it’s always good to get a different person‘s perspective on your riding!! I’ve been to so many clinics where I don’t agree with everything the trainer said but I always get something positive out of them!❤️

    I have a story about stormy not going into the trailer so.... Once it was the morning before the horse show and we were running really late in mean we were about to not be able to go and this was a big show, but all the horses were loaded except for the naughty horse and he decided that the trailer was going to eat him and he refused to go in (this horse is never stressted once his in he doesnt like the process) but he would not go in so we had to use a lead rope to push him in ( which is not what we would normally do) and when the show was over the horse just walked it's self casualty into the trailer like it was no big deal! The things horses do amaze me somtimes!

I have struggled so hard to find a new instructor the last 6 years. I had a beautiful instructor who pushed me but was so kind and supportive and just so lovely but sadly her own demons were too much for her and she took her own life 6 years ago :( :( be thankful for everyone in your life because before you know it they could be gone :(

    My thoughts on different types of trainers is there is pretty much two haha the loud one to get the point across and the softer spoken but still respectable and informative/corrective. I have the second one and I absolutely love her and she has really advanced my riding but it really depends on the riders personality and what they think they will benefit from! And it’s not a bad thing if you would rather a softer spoken it’s just what works best for you and your journey.

    Ears back don't always mean cranky. I learned that riding my coach's reining horse. Jesse's ears were back the whole time I was on her back and I commented that I didn't think she liked me very much, in reference to the ears always facing back. My coach looked at me and said, she's not mad, she's actually listening to you and waiting for your next "request". So I learned an interesting piece of info riding Jesse. Don't get me wrong, Stormy is a cranky old man through and through (Hahahahhah) but I think he's listening to Gabby a lot more than we think because he'll do anything to please her.
    Just something to think about.

    In all the videos I've watched Storm never once has his ears pricked at any time when he's working. He looks very sour. That trainer expected them to really work which teaches them to expect more from themselves. The girls are capable of so much more than they think and they need a trainer that helps them to push themselves. Her insights and advice were spot on and if they act on them, and practice them they will really improve. Nutrition is so incredibly important and to hear the girls are not eating or eating just sugar and carbs is a bit of a concern. Protien and some carbs is the answer along with tons of water. Maybe greek yougurt and quick cook oats in jars in the fridge overnight with added fruit of their choice that can just be grabbed and go. 16 grams of protien . There are so many things they can have as snacks for quick energy at shows like cheese cubes, almonds, fruit etc. It might be a good idea to just ask a nutritionist for recommendations.

    Girls, you are there at clinics getting their opinion and to learn something from them. Criticism isn’t always a bad thing, don’t take it as a bad thing. These trainers are trying to help you, and they have different ways of teaching. It’s ok. Don’t take their advice as you’re doing something wrong, they are trying to help you fix things and make you better. I hope you all said thank you at the end (I’m sure you did) even if you didn’t enjoy it.

    Lol glad the girls are seeing what I’m seeing. Stick with your regular trainers. You can always take something away from a clinic even if it’s just one thing but that doesn’t mean you need to follow that trainers whole Philosophy. The parents may like what she has to say but the parents aren’t the ones riding.

    She wasn't even all that strict...I think in a clinic situation, they have limited time to work with everyone, so they need to be especially blunt and to the point. Also, yes, she was loud and shouting a lot, but I'm sure she developed that volume in her years of trying to be heard over wind/rain/arena noise/etc. If she had a microphone or sound system, it might have been a different vibe. Even when she was telling them good job and praising them, it still sounded like yelling. LOL. Clinics can be tough, and they can feel like you're being picked apart in front of everyone no matter how hard you're trying. But I hope the girls stick with it and try again! They both improved so much in just a couple days and it sounded like Cathy really took notice.

      Repetition when being taught something is key. A good trainer will drill it into your brain and it will hopefully stick with you for the rest of your life. Thats why they come off as "strict"

    Hi Laura, I’m glad the girls found the clinic challenging. This is my scripture for today.
    “My fellow believers, when it seems as though you are facing nothing but difficulties, see it as an invaluable opportunity to experience the greatest joy that you can! For you know that when your faith is tested it stirs up power within you to endure all things. And then as your endurance grows even stronger it will release perfection into every part of your being until there is nothing missing and nothing lacking.”

    Haha omg I love the feedback from Gabby and Kailey! Too funny. The instructor is really good! Don't take it too personally, she is there to help and in clinic settings it can be really hard to remember every student's name/horse/experience etc. Also she only has a couple of days to teach you so there will be more pressure than a normal lesson with Brandon or Fiona! But let's be real, we've all been there and have struggled with new instructors. I've cried at clinics a few times out of embarrassment/frustration/feeling completely incompetent 😂 looking back I can laugh, but as a teenager I felt like the worst thing ever!

    There are a few well known And accomplished riders/professionals in the industry that teach and tell riders at their clinics and in lessons that “long arms and short reins, win medals.“
    That means that the rider needs to carry their hands well in front of them but with clearly bent elbows (forearm and hands going in a straight line to the horses mouth) and over the horse’s withers without the hands leaning on the horse’s neck. The rider must carry their own hands and follow the movement of the horse’s head and neck especially in the walk and canter. If you’re not moving your elbows and hands forward and back like jockey arms, to the degree that the Horse is moving its head and neck, then you are bumping the horse in the mouth or interfering with the horses natural back and forth up and down forward and back movement in if you’re not moving your elbows and hands forward and back like jockey arms, to the degree that the horse is moving its head and neck, then you are bumping the horse in the mouth or interfering with the horses natural back and forth up and down forward and back movement in the walk and trot. Having your elbows and hands out in front of you with shorter reins allows you to have better balance better control better position better communication with the horse but you also have to have correct hand arm and elbow position otherwise you have tension and stiffness in your hands arms shoulders and upper back as soon as your thumbs go inward like piano hands and or if your elbows are out to the side like chicken wings and your fingers must be together and closed otherwise you automatically cause tension in your wrist which the horse can feel down the bridle to its mouth. And if your reins are too long, you have to constantly shorten them or adjust them in order to correctly communicate and influence your horse and when you have to constantly fix them, you are constantly interfering which can cause the horse to act up or toss their head or get anxious and sometimes what people may call “being a jerk“. You don’t want the reins so short that you are straightening your arms or leaning forward with your upper body because then you are altering your position and changing the position and elasticity of your elbows and contact. Having a light contact or a soft contact doesn’t come from giving the hands forward it comes from the amount of weight you carry in your hands with the Reins. At times the rider will need to adjust the amount of weight according to what they are doing or asking
