It's definitely one if his most underrated and unheard songs from that time... But at the same point thats just my circle of people. They dont know what they're missing out on for real.
To all the people who are saying this should have been on the original CD and not the deluxe edition have completely misunderstood a album named MMLP2, that is a sequal to MMLP. Lyrically, Monster is a grown up version of The Way I Am. How the fame is like a monster to him. If you have heard MMLP, then you know why a song like Asshole is on MMLP2.
Romy Taylor I somewhat side with you on this. I really don't think you can say that the finished product is a true continuation of TMMLP (if it was, we'd have a lot more reactionary songs and verses grappling with fame and media double standards etc.). Of course, that's not to say there aren't any similar aspects but still. I think Eminem chose the title TMMLP2 because he looks upon the original as his definitive album. He clearly wanted to put something together that in his mind approximated or bettered his major label sophomore in terms of scope, quality, personal importance and artistry. This is what most artists tend to do when they reuse a title and add a numeral. It's quite obvious that there are elements of all of his albums on TMMLP2 ("So Much Better" sounds like an updated "Puke" and Brainless would have sounded right at home on TSSLP or Relapse). For this reason, I would argue that Groundhog Day would work just fine as an album track (it's a sequel to Yellow Brick Road in a sense and details a vital part of dude's history). If you want another reason, the album is, frankly, fairly messy to begin with. I don't see how any kind of additional track could reduce its coherence drastically and it just so happens that Groundhog Day is stronger than at least half of the existing album.
To be quite honest, it would be near impossible for Eminem to pick up where TMMLP left off. For one, he'd have to be in a very specific headspace and somehow marry years of artistic endeavour to one era. Also, though the scenarios may be different, most of the themes on TMMLP are present on TSSLP and The Eminem Show (a proper trilogy). You'd have to pull a blinder to craft something that strongly resembles that record without it sounding like the preceding and subsequent ones.
***** I disagree with almost everything. Although some of the productions on TMMLP2 carry a similarly murky, hazy vibe to those on the original, the album is closer to Recovery more than anything else sonically (and even that's a stretch). I don't buy Eminem on that front at all. Almost nothing here sounds like early '00s Dre or Bass Brothers. As for Groundhog Day not fitting, it's not unlike Legacy and Evil Twin in that it consciously dips into the past and the manner in which the sample is embedded in the song is similar to Rhyme Or Reason and Love Game. There are several themes at play on TMMLP2, not one. Groundhog Day would complement those already listed and add a new dimension to the album.
I cringed so hard reading this comment. I can guarantee you that Eminem didn't think of "The Way I Am" once when writing "Monster." Monster's sole purpose was to be a hit radio single to promote the album. It was MMLP2's "I Love the Way You Lie."
***** Lyrical dexterity? What's unique or skillful about the way in which Monster is written? It's a song filled with generic cliches that teenage girls can sing along too. That was the entire purpose of that track and a method that Eminem has been using since 2010 (along with many artists before him). Also, I never said it was a break up song, those are your words, not mines. Also Drake has albums worth of material better than this song, please don't start with your biased "Drake isn't real hip-hop" bullshit, I can already see it coming.
parker crews nah... This is no doubt fire. But to me Relapse is unbeatable. I think it’s too dark for most but still his best work in my opinion. Relapse from start to finish is a lyrical masterpiece.
1. "But the name's not James Todd I'm just a wordsmith (word- "smith". James Todd Smith was LL Cool J's real name. Pretty slick huh?) 2. So let these words "lift" cuz all I got is "bars" for you "dumbbells" and yours ain't "working out". Read it without the emphasis on the gym references and it STILL makes perfect fucking sense ! It's a shame that still there are people who hate on this man for piddly-ass reasons like skin colour and I quote "not contributing to the culture".
Lugit36 the point is that he doesn't say "ate the vet", he says "and an eighth of that", referring to mmlp. The 8 acres refers to his 8 albums and the mmlp ( 1 out of 8 , meaning an eighth or 1/8 ) made his path to the top and put him in the running to be the best along with nas, Jay, Pac, rakim, etc
I see a lot of people say by removing certain tracks, the album would've been 10/10. the tracks in the album were already so good that its still a 10/10 even with those tracks still in. Only tracks id remove is the one Em sang on and Monster. Mayyyyyyyyyyyyyyybe Wicked Ways. Also, I'm sure a lot of you don't even know about Don't Front. That was supposed to be in the album but didn't get the sample cleared quick enough so it was in the COD Ghost preorder bundle version of the album. Go listen to it. Another reason why MMLP2 is 10/10 already.
eh the beats were too poppy most of the time and the features were lacking mostly (exception k.dot), but it did have imo em's best wordplay and rhyme schemes.
+Bobby Dave hes gotten better lyrically. his best friend verse with yelawolf give me chills everytime, hes having a good year. medicine man was amazing too best verse on compton
Kenny Porter nearly all your liked videos on youtube are Eminem songs. you are trying to claim that he's some how better now than he was in the late 90's/early 00's when it's widely acknowledged that, that was his prime.
Bobby Dave The word "lyrical" is so cringe worthy. It's such a poison to hip-hop discussions. "Lyrical" to me means good song-writing. Eminem was a better song writer in the late 90's/early 00's than he is now. That's undeniable.
Em has a few newer songs out that I don’t fuck with but overall since relapse/recovery I think he’s grown as an artist. As a rapper I actually think his rhyme schemes in many ways has evolved. It’s his flow for the most part that through people off sometimes but he has a lot of new content that reminds me of TES and after MMLP2 I think there is a fine balance of new em and old em. I mean sure he is waaayyy past his peak he doesn’t give off the same energy, but that bar was set by him. When I listen to this shit It just solidifies to me how great of a rapper he still and listening to MMLP2 shows off his creativity. Question is will this next album(probably his last) show he can be “relevant” again and can’t dominate the rap scene again like he did with recovery and partially MMLP2. Just gotta wait for this revival album I guess

Don't Front (ft. Buckshot) 9. Rap God 10. Brainless 11. Beautiful Pain (ft. Sia) 12. Baby 13. So Far... 14. Love Game (ft. Kendrick Lamar) 15. Headlights (ft. Nate Ruess) 16. Evil Twin

*****
Lyrical dexterity? What's unique or skillful about the way in which Monster is written? It's a song filled with generic cliches that teenage girls can sing along too. That was the entire purpose of that track and a method that Eminem has been using since 2010 (along with many artists before him). Also, I never said it was a break up song, those are your words, not mines. Also Drake has albums worth of material better than this song, please don't start with your biased "Drake isn't real hip-hop" bullshit, I can already see it coming.
No one today is able to do staff like this!
By far ems best lyrics ever... Perhaps best song
parker crews nah... This is no doubt fire. But to me Relapse is unbeatable. I think it’s too dark for most but still his best work in my opinion. Relapse from start to finish is a lyrical masterpiece.
This is a different level of lyricism
@FanMadeEmineAlbums are they out of there fucking minds did they not listen to KILLSHOT AT ALL?
This is one of his best songs...anytime someone hates on eminem I refer them to this song.
2:23-2:33 How on Earth did he manage to rhyme all those words together ?!?!?
The GOAT!!!!
GOAT ..just for rhyming Ladainian Tomlinson...that was sick...charger fan here..
1. "But the name's not James Todd I'm just a wordsmith (word- "smith". James Todd Smith was LL Cool J's real name. Pretty slick huh?)
This is one of the most lyrical hip hop songs ever written/ spittin
Ridiculous! Daaamn, I put this in my queue and will do a colored rhyme scheme of this🤯🔥
Eminem is an alien who ate dictionary and spitting flows of lyrics.. Woaahh
so mow the fucking lawn, your asses are blades of grass and im fuckin up this whole landscape of rap .......broooooooooooooo
Lugit36 *the goat just ate 8 acres and an eighth of that was just to make a path and take it straight to your favorite rapper .
Jglg g Yes I've heard the song. I put 8 just for emphasis
Jglg g bruhh, that just made that line 20 times better. I already knew the lyrics were wrong. I was reading them like "dafuq?"
damn i am blessed that i was born in the GOAT'S ERA OF EMINEM
DAMNNNNNN THIS SONG IS JUST BEYOND MAH SUPERVISION
If you don't like Eminem then you don't understand his lyrics
I love his flow on this song
"Envisioning my dreams come true for wishing "
i thought he said
" envisioning my dreams come to fruition "
could be wrong but i believe im not
it is fruition, the lyrics are all messed up lol
yea it was meant both ways, it's a double enterndre
"You spit a rhyme, i spit in a rhymes face"🔥
Llookin like a dog that’s pissin, leg up on the competition 🔥🔥
Bru... Can I imagine the work he put in on this shit.....wow
Berzerk is supposed to be a fun track
+Liverpool Red Wicked Ways is top 3 on the album. Can't take it off.
Monster was awesome. Get the fuck outta here
eh the beats were too poppy most of the time and the features were lacking mostly (exception k.dot), but it did have imo em's best wordplay and rhyme schemes.
Me thinking I can become rapper after rhyming 4 words.
Meanwhile Eminem: hold my superstitions for 2 straight minutes
What a F'in flow and beat! Amazing!
He's almost like a *Rap Professor/Scientist* anymore!!
2 and a half minutes he rhymes Superstition, how the fuck is that even possible, and the guys 40. Its ridiculous how lyrical this guy is
+Bobby Dave hes gotten better lyrically. his best friend verse with yelawolf give me chills everytime, hes having a good year. medicine man was amazing too best verse on compton
+Kenny Porter you Eminem stans are ridiculous lol
Kenny Porter nearly all your liked videos on youtube are Eminem songs. you are trying to claim that he's some how better now than he was in the late 90's/early 00's when it's widely acknowledged that, that was his prime.
cocodrillo1012 He said lyrically better, which is true
Bobby Dave
The word "lyrical" is so cringe worthy. It's such a poison to hip-hop discussions. "Lyrical" to me means good song-writing. Eminem was a better song writer in the late 90's/early 00's than he is now. That's undeniable.
1ST TIME HEARING THIS SONG TODAY..NOW I GOTTA GO BACK IN TIME TO CATCH UP WITH THESE LYRICS
THATS INSANE
A lesson in lyricism.
Eminem’s best lyrical achievement by far
Krypton.. ITE who eltse caught that. Damn I’m so happy my high school days was bumpin MMLP2. Such an underrated album. Either love it or hate it
Em has a few newer songs out that I don’t fuck with but overall since relapse/recovery I think he’s grown as an artist.
Edit: can
Ian Moffet
It's not his last one apparently.
This gives me chills
Some of the best writing by Eminem. So underrated. I howled when I heard this line after the Suh Thanksgiving Day Stomp.
Dominate Sugar Ray Robinson.
I’m in a league with Muhammad.
I’ll probably end up on top of them, stompin them like Ndamakong.
I’m rushin’ like a Ukrainian LaDainian Tomlinson.
Those bars right there are some of the tightest ive ever listened too. Squeezed every ryhme out of the fewest words possible, so fuckin clean. Respect
"Pretending to be blind superman cuz I had no supervision" fucking genius
No one compares...
So underrated 🔥🔥🔥👌
4:28 this sounds so menacing like Hitler yelling
I dont really like a lot of his after 2010 stuff but this is great and underrated
Sounds like relapse flow . I liked MMLP 2 🔥
The movie Groundhog Day is about a man living the same day over and over and basically every day is the same because Eminem is still the Goat.... lol it might not be what the song is about.... but it fits for me
album would have been way better if this were the tracklist:
1. Bad Guy
2. Parking Lot (skit)
3. Rhyme or Reason
4. So Much Better
5. Groundhog Day
6. Legacy
7. Asshole (ft. Skylar Grey)
8. Don't Front (ft. Buckshot)
9. Rap God
10. Brainless
11. Beautiful Pain (ft. Sia)
12. Baby
13. So Far...
14. Love Game (ft. Kendrick Lamar)
15. Headlights (ft. Nate Ruess)
16. Evil Twin
17. desperation
Wicked ways, berzerk, survival, get rid of love game, rhyme or reason, and beatiful pain
Get rid of So Far..replace with Wicked Ways it would have been Em’s best album
Beat is omg i cant explain its just excellent
Shakespeare in trailer park
The wizard WJLB of Detroit is what Eminem talkin cray DJ
Eminem is already a legend. He is my favourite artist of all time with a fucking good reason.
I need to know who made that god damn instrumental! It's so fuckin awesome
I absolutely love this beat!🔥
4:26 best part
