Massey1105driver Corn roots angle down from the plant at a 45* angle, therefore at the center of your row between the corn stalks, the roots are at the lowest point from the top of the soil. Y drops are designed to run a hose right at the base of the corn stalk versus knifing in nitrogen in the center of the row, 15” away from the corn stalk where the roots are lowest in the ground. The theory is with Y drops the nitrogen can quickly be absorbed by the super shallow roots at the edge of the stalk versus knifing it in where you may need to wait for some rain to help drive that nitrogen down in the soil to get to the deeper roots.
David explained it very well. Like David said the corn reacts and uses the nitrogen from y dropping faster. We can also y drop when the corn is older vs knifing it. corn needs nitrogen towards the end of the growing life
I have to count out loud too
There is close to 30 years difference between the 4630 & 8120
good point, never really thought of it that way
What do y’all think about the green star system so far
I think it could be good the more we get comfortable with it
BornToFarm101 I can understand that
Do you think y dropping nitrogen is better than knifing it in?

David Weilein thank you for the explanation David, it was very helpful.
