You then literally talk yourself into duffing it. To know you aren't going to thin it, judge the distance, the landing area, and how it lands, requires 100s or even 1000s of hours of practice. Toe down bump and run 8 iron takes about a couple of dozen practice shots to add it to your locker. Then practice Chipping and putting at least twice as long as you spend whacking balls at the range.

Wes pitching and chipping I do the exact same thing, and I am 5' 9 decelerating is just from a worry of hitting too hard or topping it. in soft long grass its harder because it just wiffs too soft at the ball
