That's the neat thing about a smoothbore. If you've got powder and flint, you can find something like gravel to use for a projectile. A lot of people don't realize that our forefathers used materials like grass, wasp nests and tow for wadding. Cloth could become a big scarce out on the frontier.
Yep..I agree. Cloth was a scarcity for sure!
Great video mark. Love the grass idea. In extreme times extreme measures are needed
Amen brother...thanks for watching...
That's an incredible thumbnail, with all that unburned powder and other detritus coming out of there.
Amen brother...that is a cool thumbnail! Thanks for watching...
Awesome video, the .600 round ball is one big hunk of lead, it destroyed number 3 jug. Those 20 and 15 grain loads were impressive for such a small charge, they seemed to be pretty accurate too, very versatile gun, I'm still thinking about getting one. Definitely enjoyed watching. Have a great day, and God Bless!
You won't be disappointed when you get a smoothbore. In fact, you'll kick yourself for waiting so long.
Happy Sunday Mark!
Thanks for watching...Happy Sunday too!
Blackpowder + smoothbore + variety ammo = fun times !!! As usual Mark, I enjoyed your video ! May the Lord bless you and Mrs Blackpowder maniac shooter !!!
Amen brother...thanks for watching...
Great video Mark!
Thanks for watching.....
Thanks for watching.....
Another good one Mark! Like the variable projectiles.
Amen brother...they are fun to shoot! Thanks for watching...
Thank you for another entertaining video . Some people I knew that shot tradeguns liked paper wasp nests for under shot as a cushion wad . I believe they did use a card wad under it and a thin wad over.
If I had some wasp nests...I would have tried it!! Thanks for watching...
Knowing now what I did not know then I would have gotten a smooth bore instead of a rifle. Information was hard to come by when I picked up the flintlock. Now there is so much more out there to help the new shooters. You add to that Mark, keep fighting the good fight and keep your powder dry!
Thanks my friend....the smoothbore is definitely a fun tool to use...!!
Good on ya Mark
Thanks my friend.....
Great video about the versatility of a smoothbore ML Mark! We need to get together and shoot sometime. We can shoot chunk, offhand, or BPCR ! I have a 150 yd range at my house.
Bring it on...I'm always game!
Ethan is working with Sky chief loads maybe try shot with and without the oiled wad. Maybe the wad wet or dry?
I too have purchased a couple smoothbores and keep watching videos with them. Only shooting a .650 ball in the 16 gauge.
Bet that load is devastating for sure!
Would dandelions make suitable wad replacement??
Yes..they will work. It is about the same as grass. Thanks for watching.
As a youngun I shot 12 ga. Round ball along with a 30 30 in dirt. The rb at 40 yards amazed me for penetration and cavity!
Yes...those large round balls are devastating! Thanks for watching...
You do realize what was happening, don't you?
Your gun was shooting high on grass! 🤣
LOL...That's funny...!! I LOVE it.
God bless you and yours brother. I love your content. I had to laugh when you used grass as a patch. Bot hey. It worked. Thank you and please keep this amazing content coming.
Amen brother...I plan on it...its finally warming up around here! Thanks for watching...
Another great video ! I seen all the fun Mark was having and I was bit by the smoothie bug. So I built one and it has become one of my favorite guns ! I get deer every year with a muzzleloader rifle but this past season in Pa. I shot a big doe with my twenty gauge smoothie at eighty yards no problem ! That 60 cal. Ball does the job ! Placement is necessary if you want to save something to take home ! Mark has shot mine at the Pioneer flats shoot just to bring me luck 😂 Mark is the most inspirational person I’ve met in the muzzleloader world. And we love Jesus too ! 👍😃 Blessings !
Hi Jerry
.
.
You would think that as many people want a Smoothbore, that a company like traditions would make an affordable one like they used to, in 20 or 12ga. They have a blunderbuss, but it's not practical for hunting.
I agree..it wouldn't take much to changeover the buss gun to a smoothbore. We all know they would sell a bunch of them too...!!
First time I hefted an old fowler, I fell in love. It was so light. Couldn't afford it at the time. Later was able to buy an 1850s percussion 20ga double barrel shotgun. So thats my smooth bore. Light and sort of a fowler with a bonus barrel.
Bonus barrel..?? Man, that is sweet!
Thanks Mark that was alot quicker than I expected for the video. But it was outstanding and looks like from the comments you might have sold some people on getting one. Have you compared patched roundball to the card wad? Looks like you had fun doing it and the grass made me laugh. Take care thanks again.
I forgot to try the patched round balls....I even had pillow ticking with me...Guess getting old is hard on the brain...!!
Interesting video with a smooth bore. You know what makes another good cushion or patch wad? - old wasp nests. We got plenty of them around here. Thanks for the video.
If I had some wasp nest, I would have tried them..!!
What a Lovely Spring Shoot in that Fine Holler! Thanks Mark! And remember, eye and ear protection and watching Black Powder Maniac Shooter every Sunday, is Strongly Recommended! I can say it helps make my week far more Happy! Many Blessings Brother Mark! DaveyJO in Pennsylvania p.s. One of these days we’ll have to meet somewhere someplace where black powder rules!
Blessing to you & your family too my friend! ..thanks for watching...
never thought of using grass as a wad. i have a 12 gauge flinter and look forward to trying different methods. Thanks for posting this Vid. Keep ur powder dry
Thanks for watching...
Great vid mark! Keep em coming!
Thanks for watching...
Another great video, Mark. I've been thinking about building a Pedersoli Trade Gun kit or maybe a Brown Bess kit. I also am considering a Kibler Colonial Rifle kit in .58 smoothbore. Which one do you think might be better?
That depends on what type shooting you wish to do. If you like target shooting, hunting longer distances than 80-100 yards, go with the Kibler. If you prefer shooting fowl, small game & versatility, go with a smoothbore. Both are awesome guns, but, they do have their limitations.
@@blackpowdermaniacshooter Thanks
Loading the grass was very interesting for sure! I loved the time-lapse of you cleaning up at the end too. That was really cool to see. Thanks as always for sharing the videos with us all and blessings to you and your entire family Mark!👍😁
Thanks my friend.....I'm going to post a flying video on the Maysville KY Simple Living Channel Tuesday. I think you'll like it: th-cam.com/video/9ZC7XINgsIc/w-d-xo.html
Have you ever tried pea gravel?
No..I haven't. If I would have thought of it, I would have tried it.
Great video
Thanks for watching.....
top show as always
Thanks for watching.....I LOVE putting these type videos together.
The smallest caliber smoothbore I have seen is 0.50; most are around 0.62 (20ga). What is known about the performance of small caliber smoothbores? Modern shotguns go down to 410. I would be interested to know your experience or see any testing you might be able to perform. Thanks for the fun!
If I can get access to something smaller than a 62 caliber, I'd certainly try it. Thanks for watching.

Great video Mark I appreciate you sharing 👌👍🔥so how would I get my hands on one of those?
Dixie Gun Works may have one...Abe's Arms may have one too...814-488-3118 ....Tell them the BPMS says Hi.
@@blackpowdermaniacshooter thanks Mark
Another great video from brother Mark.
Thanks for watching...the smoothbores are VERY fun to shoot.
@@blackpowdermaniacshooter yes sir, they sure do look it. Very versatile indeed.
Won a match at Southwestren rendezvous in Leslie Arkansas. My trade gun was sighted with patched ball, but I forgot my patches. Used grass and won the match… las time I shit that load however
Love that spelling 🤣😂😅
@@jerryakins1622 so sorry, I didn’t see it till just now. I have dyslexia and don’t see misspelled words easily, did not mean to say that, shot
Looks like grass is a winner after all. That's awesome trying something new in pinch. Thanks for watching.
Is that a southpaw fowler your shooting? Does it make a difference? Thanx! Great video!
Its an ol' Pedersoli trade Gun.....its been a workhorse for me for years now...
@@blackpowdermaniacshooter Let me try this again please! Is that a left handed gun? I'm a southpaw! (left handed)
@@michaelhrivnak1719 Nope...its designed for a right hand shooter. All my long rifles are RH guns. I found out I can hit targets MUCh better shooting LH. I'm not going to switch guns now. I'm getting too old for that.
@@blackpowdermaniacshooter Great minds think alike! Thank you sir!
Good evening from Syracuse NY brother
Good evening.....hope you enjoy this one put together Saturday morning.
Great job once again brother! I'm a huge fan of the smoothies also. I have taken squirrels, rabbit, and deer with mine. And the biggest bonus, easier to clean!
Amen on the cleaning....it usually takes me less than 8 minutes to clean this one out. Thanks for watching...
Very cool Mark. I love these viewer comments challenges. God Bless brother
I'm working on more of those viewer challenges..!!
@@blackpowdermaniacshooter sweet!
Good video and the message at the end is the most important part that sadly many don't adhere to these days.
Amen brother...thanks for watching...
Good job Mark!!!
