- I bought the Canon DM-E1D despite of some of its bad specs. And I found out that one of those is just wrong. So, is this the perfect microphone for R5C, R3, R6II, R7, R8, and R10? Put your headphones on and decide yourself!
Do you love filmmaking, camera rigs, the R5C and Ronin gimbals?

Great video btw, thanks.
De los videos más completos sobre este micrófono. Gracias
Very interesting and useful video. Great experiment testing the frequency range. I think the microphone is a bit underrated, because one reads Canon’s published frequency range and one is immediately put off. For me personally, listening to the two side by side with you speaking, the Canon mic is much clearer and easier to understand what you are saying. This may be because my hearing has degraded in the high end, so I need the low end to be reduced to not make speech sound mufffled. I’m now really uncertain which of the two to get !
Thanks! I would decide based on if I needed the mono/stereo feature or not.
Good to know this mic does pick up the whole frequency spectrum. I’m not sure why you would need to use an adjustment curve to make the canon mic “sound like the rode”. Boosting the lows, especially that much below 40hz is just going to add a bunch of mud and rumble to your sound. I would just EQ in post, the low end rolloff could even be ideal.
That was more of an academic experiment :) Most of the time I make custom adjustments with the EQ (if even)
Thank u for this video I am sticking with rode :)
You’re welcome! And yes, Rode is great. I just also got the PodMic USB and love it.
Thanks for the test! Are you aware of any 3rd party mics for this new hotshoe system?

@@johannesdoerrthanks, will have a look into this one 👍🏻
Thank you for the useful video. I have a question. I'm going to record the lines of the characters outdoors, so will the equipment(Canon DME 1D) up there be okay? The camera is using Canon R7. Thank you again for the great video from Korea~~
Always make sure to be as close to the speakers as possible. If it's only two people, I'd recommend lav mics. Is it on a stage outdoors? Then you could install a rode stereo mic with a rode wireless system in front of the stage, and be further away with the camera. A mic on the camera is always the worst option, but if you have no other option than that, I think the DME1D will do great!
@@johannesdoerr Thank you for the detailed explanation. Actually, there aren't many choices. Your detailed explanation really helped me a lot
@@martinwoody8094 good luck with your project!
@@johannesdoerr Thank you very much
Eu me arrependo tanto de ter comprado esse microfone para minha R7 um ruído absurdo
Interested in this. Unfortunately Canon RF lenses are pretty loud for video autofocus (was surprised by this). Any idea if this mic helps? Thanks.
No it doesn’t. But not a problem if surroundings are loud enough :)

Wanna know what helps learn how to used manual focus quit relying on auto focus or what I call lazyfocus

Incredibly interesting video, Johannes!
We'd like to collaborate with you. Please let us know how we can get in touch
dont forget the camera has its internal mic and i find it does well for outdoor scenes to capture all sounds
Yes, I think my comparison between internal and DME-1D also shows that it is not too bad for street sounds, but not really for music... And it's only mono. Weird, even my RP records stereo.
I think Canon's frequency response is as terrible as they claim. Your tests back that up. The levels drop off significantly outside the 100-10k range. Normally, those ratings for frequency response are given as +/- 3dB of levels. At 14:25, your video even shows this on their datasheet, but you are not looking at the row directly below your cursor. Rode claims 35-18k, still far better than Canon.
So, just because it CAN pick up sounds outside that range is largely meaningless, as they will not be consistent or accurate in relation to the other frequencies.
Yes, you could apply a custom EQ curve, but that's going to boost a lot of noise, especially given how awful the signal-to-noise ratio is. Given all of this, the sad conclusion is that this is just not a good product for the vast majority of use cases.
Esse microfone é uma porcaria
