It depends on where you are going. Some are 3 or 4 months. And in a lot of the Caribbean you can travel on an expired passport, but it’s not advised and it isn’t for very long.

  • @mdduet
    @mdduet 20 วันที่ผ่านมา +3

I do agree with your passport expiration date being important. As a cruise port worker I can offer you what I see most often as the reasons for day of cruising denials.
#1 documents packed in luggage. After being told guests continue to make this mistake. There are thousands of luggage pieces to search with no guarantee they will be found by sail away time. #2 Cruising using a Photo ID and birth certificate and arriving missing either one of them. #3 confusing a Real ID ( Star ) with an Enhanced ID. Only five states have them. If you show up at a port with only a Star ID without a BC it's a no go. Lastly showing up at the last minute hoping to get into the terminal. Ships have to close out their manifests, just like Airlines do clearing with Border Protection, to be able to sail. If you arrive after that point you are going to be denied. Don't travel the day of the cruise unless you live very close to the departure port.

We're about 1.5 years from our passports expiring and have sent them in for renewal because we're in a period of time where we aren't cruising or doing any international travel. It actually feels "funny" to be without a passport at the moment and essentially tied down to home, but those fresh new passports will feel so good when they arrive!

You are SOOO right about that! 😂 When we renewed last year, it felt incredibly odd as we waited. Such a relief when the new ones arrived! I wanted everyone to celebrate with us, but the reactions were, "So? You guys travel all the time." Exactly! But we couldn't have even if we wanted to! 😮😢
Then we saw odd expiration dates for our Global Entry!

Good points. Visas can be very confusing to figure out sometimes. When we were on a cruise that stopped in Turkey, it took some research to figure out if we needed a visa or not. Since we were on a cruise we did not need one but people going to Turkey not on a cruise needed one. While I was glad we did not need a visa, it definitely took some in depth reading to confirm that we did not need on. It would be very helpful if cruise lines could give cruisers a heads up on this sort of thing but considering some of the contradictory answers you can get from call centers, I am not sure you could trust the answers being given anyway.

ETIAS is not a visa. It is a travel authorisation for visa-exempt travellers (for example US/CA) to enter 30 European countries starting in the first half of 2025. ETIAS is currently not in operation and no applications are collected at this point. You can found online information on the European Union. Europeans know this procedure in reverse (called ESTA) for many years now when travelling to US.

Having been in charge of the reservation system of a major airline I am surprised that you got stopped on the way out of Sweden and not on the way in where they based on the expiry date and intended length of stay should know if you can be allowed in. However if you intended to stay let say 1 week and you stayed 2 and then it was within the period that is a case on your shoulders. Secondly as long as a Passport is valid to the date that it is written you should never be refused entry back into the home country, the 90/180 day rule is because most countries issue 90 or 180 days visas and you PP should still be avoid when you leave. many countries even allow arrival back home on an expired passport, often after the airline gets an OK from immigration. The PP still serves the purpose to proof that you are who you say you are and that is all your home country needs to do border control.

I work in the ports in NYC. I tell people they're "Denied boarding." The most common mistakes are not having the proper visas for other countries (Canada mostly) for non US citizens. The most common for US citizens is passport sent on the ship with the luggage, then needs to be found. All luggage gets x-rayed and longshoremen are not rushing to find your bag. Believe it or not, sometimes the bag cannot be found before the ship leaves and the passenger is left weeping in the terminal with their luggage on the ship and their passport in their luggage.
Depending on where the ship is going, NOT Europe, a US citizen can board with a valid state ID and US birth certificate (Carribean).

While he was traveling, the US put a new rule into effect that all US citizens had to have a valid US passport to reenter or leave the country. He had to get an emergency US passport from the consulate to get back. Thank you for the reminder- leaving in a week on another cruise. :)

I think there is also a requirement to have a specific number of pages in your passport for stamps

I have been aware of the 6 month expiration limits. I just dont understand the point of our passports expiration dates if the cut off is 6 months prior to its expiration. Why not just make passports good for 9 years and 6 months LOL

As an airline agent, when they scanned your passport, they should have known you were unable to be legally able to travel. The airline in question as well as the agent(s) who let you board could have been subject to fines upwards of $10K.

I carried my birth “certificate” for years between the US, Canada and Mexico. By the word used I mean they never asked to see it and I drove in and out without a problem. When I went to get my passport, what I thought was my birth certificate was in fact a birth registration and was in fact not valid for anything including travel to Mexico or Canada! A birth certificate had never been issued for me by the county where I was born. After getting a certificate I was able to get a passport.

Have not listened to your full broadcast yet, but I wanted to add yes yes yes 100% yes you should check your expiration date before you check your passport lol
But also you need to phot/scan your passport as a back up because it does not replace but it does help if you miss place while on vacation . You can add it to a thumb drive. You can email it to yourself.

Add when another post it here that the Disney cruise line is an amazing cruise line. Before you book your cruise line as you’re going to hit the button to pay for it it does tell you and even before you even pick the room., it does tell you what you need and it tells you dates so if you’re going to a country and you need to have the expiration date three months or less they tell you
Plus while you’re paying Foward while you’re setting up your stuff when it gets close to check in time online again, you have to scan your passport and somebody validates it then
Disney cruise is very good for the consumer
But that does not excuse us individuals having to do our own research

Love that you and Country say “visa”. it has nothing to do with the visa process, but they want you to think so. It is equivalent to paying to check a bag just another way to generate fees for most of them can be done online and you get your visa moments a true visa document that you should take a lot longer. lol at least going forward this will be a new normal that every country you visit you will need the online cash grab Visa lol keep up the amazing work

Along with those two rules of checking for visa requirements and checking your passport, expiration date.
You have to check all the rules of the country and one example I will give is Japan
For Japan, if you have a CPAP device, you have to be preapproved and get a real visa document but it’s a medical visa for it . we did it in 2019 and I believe it last for four or five years and it does involve you getting your doctors signature saying this is a truly medical device.
Same applies for any medication you take because some of your medication you can legally take at your home. You can’t take in Japan and it is extremely illegal.
      So always do your homework

I know about the 6 month expiration for passports. I have known that for a long time. BUT - I don't understand it. You have an expiration date on your passport. But that's not really the expiration date, it's 6 months earlier. So why isn't that the expiration date? If it's only valid for 9.5 years, and not 10 years, why not put that as the expiration date?? Ok, so if you still have 6 months, there is some wiggle room in that time, but NO, apparently not. I feel it's like they are saying "haha, we got you, we tricked the traveler"...

What does an expiration date mean? If it expires before the listed date, then back up the expiration date when you issue the passport. Who would know this? Not me.

    Jordan, duh.
But yes, these are things you - you in general not you in specific - these are things every traveller needs to know.
I also keep a note (one on me, one at home) with passport numbers, visa numbers, travel insurance info, travel agent info, medical must-dos and must-nots & so forth.
If the feces hits the oscillating blades, I hope those numbers will help. At minimum, the travel agent & travel insurance should be a nice cushion to fall on.

Carnival does have a message on their contract that speaks of this. Thank Goodness I read it. And rushed to get my passport renewed. Who knew. I think it is just in case you get sick. They do not want illegals in their countries, world wide. Which makes sense. I now know too. Happy Cruising JJ. Love your videos.

You don’t know the difference between “Customs” and “Immigration”, yet you are posting videos trying to give others advice.
You misspoke when you stated Americans (and other citizens who do not require a visa for Europe) will need a visa for Europe in 2025.
ETIAS is NOT a visa system. Travelers from visa-exempt countries who want to travel to (most of) Europe will have to register online in the ETIAS system and pay a small fee (estimated now at 7 euros).
The need to have six months validity on your passport when traveling has been around for decades.
Sorry dude…your video had two main points and you provided incorrect info on both points.
Nothing more than clickbait hurriedly thrown together to get some views…doing your viewers a disservice.

  • @richardborlandhodson
    @richardborlandhodson 23 วันที่ผ่านมา

Given that this video is supposed to provide clarity there is a lot of misleading, sloppy language
Several times you say "customs" when you mean "immigration" (two completely different things).
Also, for the vast majority of European countries (certainly the whole of Schenghen and the UK), US citizens DO NOT REQUIRE a visa. USA is a "visa waiver" country. ETIAS is not a visa, in fact it only applies to those who do not need a visa.
Poor show Jordan. I normally thumbs up your videos but this one is very poor and misleading.
