Paint It Black was used in the opening credits of Tour of Duty - an '80s drama series about Vietnam.
The Big Push also covered it, though it doesn't appear that you've reacted to it. (It ended the infamous Red Braces/Suspenders set - the one with I Shot the Sheriff and War Pigs.)

The song is about his girl who has died. The line of black cars with flowers is her funeral. He is unable to watch other girls because his girl has died.

Death of a loved one, the black cars with flowers, no light in his life anymore, heavy heart and people not knowing what to say except sorry for your loss.. then they to go on with their day, colour and sunlight reminding him of brighter happier days.. Yep probably my most favourite Stones song as a teenager.

Oh they always rocked - and yes this definitely has an undercurrent. I also love their Bridges to babylon album - flip the switch has a vibe. When growing up in the UK, there was this silly, are you a Stones or Beatles fan, as if you couldn't be both - I was only 3 when they both started - so too young for the debate and fell in love with both!!!! Great reaction and thanks for visiting this great track. There is an energy in the old recordings - can;t beat it!!!

"Paint It Black" is a song by the English rock band the Rolling Stones. A product of the songwriting partnership of Mick Jagger and Keith Richards, it is a raga rock song with Indian, Middle Eastern and Eastern European influences and lyrics about grief and loss.

Lyrically, older songs had multiple interpretations which made them more interesting. Also, because of how they were recorded, they had a raw feel to them. The slight imperfections kept the energy of the song.

If you want artists who can never be replicated, look no further than Jimi Hendrix and Stevie Ray Vaughan. As a comparison, you should hear their respective versions of "Voodoo Child (Slight Return)".
Individually, a good Jimi song to check out is "All Along the Watchtower", and for SRV, "Texas Flood"; I'm partial to the studio version, but a good live performance at the El Mocambo is available.

You missed a very important line at the very beginning of the song that would have clued you into the rest of the lyrics.... "I see a line of cars and they're all painted black" = a funeral procession; death of a person, a relationship, his emotions. Also, a "red door" = welcome. These play into the meaning of the song. Just like the lyrics of any other well crafted hip hop or rap song, you must take every word, phrase and their placement into consideration. Also, consider that the splotches of red, black and white as well as the paint strokes were very common in the psychedelic club shows (sometimes using gels) back then.

Fun facts: jack sparrow is based on Keith Richard's. Keith Richard's plays Jack sparrows father in the movie. Normal in the band the follow the drummer, not the stones they follow Keith Richard's on guitar. If you listen to this song close on your headphones. When the instrumental piece at the end goes the drums are slightly off beat with the guitars. Only good music ears will hear it. Imo one of the best songs made
