  • Travelling to Africa on safari is an exciting adventure but one of the most frequently asked questions revolves around what and how to pack.
With strict weight restrictions on internal flights between camps, packing can sometimes present a bit of a challenge.
I thought I’d share the gear and methodology behind my packing for safari.

    Great, thanks Andrew.
Now please a video on packing the photographic gear and how to deal with weight restrictions for carry on (particularly in SA where they have become somewhat paranoid about 7 kgs).

Ditto on your suggestions for packing camera gear. I believe the camera gear falls into the total weight restriction of 33kg - I think - please correct on total weight if I am mistaken. Thanks.

Hi Louis, are you referring to internal flights on light aircraft or hand luggage on international flights?
For internal flights like those between camps in Botswana or to camps in the Masai Mara for example, the additional freight seat that we purchase takes the weight allowance up to 30-35kg's per guest. A travel bag of 11kg's would then leave the rest of the weight allowance for camera gear. Camera bags are usually stowed in the back of the plane and I have never had any issues with the size or dimensions of a number of bags.
      I hope this helps?

@@andrewbeck6048 Andrew - thank you for your reply. Yes, I am referring to small/light plane flights - I gather usually for flights in or between countries. So the 30-35 kg/per guest is a total allowance (including camera gear). In terms of arrangements your firm makes in situations like suggested, I infer Wild Eye purchases an extra seat to make up for weight that exceeds this allowance. Is this the case? Thanks again for your reply.

Yes that’s correct. The standard allowance is usually between 15 and 20 kgs per person but we purchase and extra freight seat for our groups (included in our the costs of our tours) which affords us the luxury of a total in excess of 30kgs. This is obviously dependent on the group size and country we are traveling in.
