    Superb work. I wonder if I could use it at my high school here in Japan as an extracurricular project. I miss the joy of doing science!!

    What angle should the rays hit the dvd at? And did you need to split the dvd layers to isolate the gradient? Many thanks!

    Thanks for sharing the video. I am interested in experimenting with a CCTV camera that has a varifocal lens instead of a Canon camera. Could you please tell me the magnification level (X) of the Canon camera you used, taking into consideration the distance from the camera to the diffraction grating?

    What's the software that you are using?

    Which software you used ? Is it free ?

    Isn't the DVD closer than the minimum FL of the lens (0.38 m aka14.96″)? Doesn't this cause blurriness? Great video. Thanks for sharing.

    One potential problem I found is that, you didn't have a collimated beam before it hit the grating. I would guess there was some spectral crosstalk, and thus reduced the resolving power.

    Great video! I also want to build one of these, but I'm confused with the Tracker physics. Could you do a tutorial on it and show how to use this software and, for example, correlate the spectra to the wavelengths?

      i dont understand how the software cuantifies the amount of intensity.

    • @nickpalmer5057

      @@kinnblee The software maps the sensor and uses the pixel position and brightness as the spectrum axes. The position of the pixel on the sensor is mapped to a wavelength of light due to the gradient splitting the coherent light (in SMA mode). That's why it needs to be calibrated using a known source. This gives the software the correct "zero point". It would display a different spectrum each time if the light diffracted to a different position on the sensor. each peak would be in it's correct position relative to each other ( unique to the source) just plotted at the wrong wavelength. Then the program uses the forward voltage on the sensor pixel to determine the intensity. Boom bam your picture became a graph. I'm sure there's a Fourier transform in there somewhere too.

    I have a better solution, don't use lenses, project the sprectrum directly into the sensor.

    • @Muonium1
      @Muonium1 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      not a better solution unless you only want to view one minuscule portion of the spectrum at ultra high resolution with insanely long exposure times. you have to use the lens to see the whole visible range.
