  • The USS Gerald Ford is the world's largest and most advanced aircraft carrier, a groundbreaking ship the likes of which has never been seen in human history. Over 1,000 feet (337m) in length, and displacing 100,000 tons, it is the largest warship ever built by man. But is the Ford truly unsinkable as some claim, and if not, what would it take? Hello, and welcome to another episode of The Infographics Show- today we're taking a look at what it would take to sink the USS Gerald Ford.

      How many Gerald R Ford carriers are there?
      The vessel is scheduled to be commissioned in 2020, while further ships of the class will enter service at five-year intervals. A total of ten Ford-class carriers are planned with construction continuing to 2058. CVN 78 will replace USS Enterprise (CVN 65), which entered service in 1961 and decommissioned in 2017.

    The ability of the crew to perform effective damage control is a factor you neglected to consider. Every Sailor is a Damage Controlman.
    Even if a small boat attack successfully damaged the ship, the crew would likely seal off the all water tight doors, and shore the hull as best as possible. Thus, preventing the sinking for the ship.

    As to the comment that in 2006 a Chinese sub surfaced in the midst of a task force, and then states the that the task force did not know the sub was there. Just because the public statements said they did not know it was there because they were not actively looking for it, does not mean that they weren't looking. They are always looking. The sub was not considered hostile, so no action would have been taken, and let the other side think they got away with a PR gain.
    As one who flew ASW back in the late '60s, our air group had a technique that allowed us to detect and track a US Boomer. The only people we told about it was our own senior staff all the way up including the sub commands. I'm sure the subs are harder to detect these days and am equally sure detection techniques are better as well. We used to play games with our attack subs. This allow both sides to get better which is what war games are all about.

    Navy vet here (Former FC stationed on a few carriers). Watch the documentary about sinking the USS Oriskany. The enemy (whomever that maybe) already knows how it might be done - it's just having the cash, commitment, forces n technology to do it.. that takes out about 90% of possible threats.. n nothing is 100%. The Swedish diesel sub for example, can pre-emptively strike but with enough firepower in one hit? I'm not so sure - the carrier has many layers of redundancy to ameliorate against 2-3 good hits. It probably wouldn't sink, n then that sub would have to make it home.. unlikely, but possible.

    I would say fairly accurate breakdown. Is a super carrier vulnerable? Yes, however how vulnerable depends on the tactics used. The trick is don't put the carrier in a dangerous situation that u can avoid i.e. close to shore or within range of a lot of missiles. That may keep them out of operational range, but not necessarily out of range on navel containment of the enemy.

    Carriers are incredibly tough to sink. Check out the Bikini Atoll nuclear tests. The USS Saratoga (CV-3) didnt sink when the first one went off. Also the USS Kitty Hawk was used as a test platform to see what it would take to sink a modern carrier. The Navy was surprised on how hard it was to sink her using missiles, bombs, and torpedoes. Are carriers indestructible? No. But they are very hard to sink successfully.

      Hahahaha! HAHAHAHAHAHA! Perhaps you did not comprehend what I said. Maybe you do not know what "anything" means. Man has never made anything that cannot be destroyed, that is literal "anything", by the way.
      Do not fall into that stupid false sense of security. *NEVER* underestimate an opponent, *NEVER* . The fact that you think it cannot be sunk means that you don't really understand how weapons work. In a time of war a weapon will b e created to do exactly that, even if such a weapon does not exist today. Hell, they could just nuke it with that low flying missile they just showed off, or one of a similar design. One direct hit with a nuke and it is going to the depths, that is a guarantee. I know, you said; "no it can’t be sunk by any ship or aircraft", that is a cop-out and I won't let you get away with taking the easy way out.

    • @grizzlyrants37
      @grizzlyrants37 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Daniel Duncan ok buddy where talking about today. And nothing can sink it that’s not a nuke and they would nuke it as it could result in America nuking other stuff like bases. And your proving my point because you couldn’t state anything besides a nuke. And your forgetting cyber warfare and spies. You think the US won’t know if an attack is coming

    • @benhayunga7886
      @benhayunga7886 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The ocean is vast. No matter how big your fleet is, it can never be everywhere in the ocean at once. Sinking this ship would be easy. If a chinese ship popped up in the middle of a military drill without being detected, then saying "Yeah but in war" is a completely nonsense excuse. During many military war games, there ships are active as if they were "in war" swedish ships constantly sunk this carrier with no reprecussions, to the point that America leased the swedish subs to try and find ways to counter it.
      So yes, even today it can be destroyed. We can currently make water based drones. Water based kamikaze drones could totally sink this this ship easily. It really is becoming obsolete.

    Aircraft carriers are not like battleships. They are not meant to engage directly in combat. They are basically just mobile airbases. Carriers always travel in strike groups consisting of destroyers, cruisers, subs and other smaller vessels that surround the carrier. These escorts are responsible for naval attack and defense. The carrier is just the ride for the aircraft cover and acts as the strike group’s command center.
    As long as aircraft are essential in naval warfare, large carriers that can deploy and maintain a powerful air presence anywhere in the world will always be necessary.
