I have messed around with HPL1 engine source code, was fun to tweak the engine and see stuff change in Penumbra but unfortunately add to give up on my mod idea, because making and modifying maps to that game, was very hard to me. :( It did taught me a bunch of stuff about game engines, and I also loved how fast it compiled. One thing I was not a fan thou, was your love for the Hungarian notation ;D but that is a preference thing and I got used to it. :) Thanks for releasing HPL1 and HPL2 source code and being so friendly to modding your games. And btw I'm among those that say, please do not change to UE5, keep updating your engine for as long you guys are able.
I really hope more studios don't abandon their own engines and use UE5. Engines like the Glacier Engine that IOI Interactive uses for their Hitman Games is extremely well optimized and I really don't want these studios to switch to UE5, because it will ruin performance and the game might have a generic feeling to it. Its a breath of fresh air when a studio uses and creates their own engine instead of abandoning it.
@RGisOnline performance and feeling has very little to do with the engine, that is mostly to do with the developer using the engine, which many developers have made well performing games in Unreal as well as ones that have a unique look and feeling to them
Awesome, these games back in the mid 2010s inspired me to get into game development. It’s a real treat to get a dedicated video by the man himself. Cheers!
Happy birthday. It's nice to see studios that are still using their own tech instead of switching to UE5 and its flawed rendering pipeline. I still remember when I tried the first tech demo that later become Penumbra. I was pretty impressed by it and the first Penumbra still looks pretty fine.
This unique engine is wonderful for a lot of reasons like his Newton Physic... This engine have a soul like no other engine and you can touch it in all of its games that make it so successful.
you guys are seriously awesome. amnesia dark descent was very cool back in 2008, and still VERY effective, even for me who has played it like 10 times over the years. amnesia the bunker is frankly one of the most impressively tight and gameplay connected horror games out in the market today, very impressive effort. if your next game is anything like the bunker in gameplay tightness, its an instant buy from me. also i didn't know you guys made your own engine. i always thought it was like early Unity lol.
Seriously love how open you guys are with development details, hey as it happens I'm a swedish student currently studying game development HIRE ME PLEASE!!!!
@@Adam-vg5yz Is a good engine yes but is not amazing, it has its problems and IMO, not all games in the world, should be made on a single engine that is a really boring thought to me and also stifles innovation. We need more engines being made, so more people know, how to make game engines. Is like as if all cars used the exact same engine. The probability of stagnation becomes way higher. This leads to, we also need more engines, to be able to really detect, if Unreal Engine is indeed the best or not... because if it has no competition, how can we really be sure is a "amazing" engine? See my point? Having said this, I don't think all game engines, need to compete with Unreal Engine and not all games need to have ultra realistic raytraced graphics.

I remember playing that 2D game. It had cool lighting. Also played the first 3D tech demo, and I enjoyed it a lot for some reason. Probably because I had already played Penumbra and I was looking at its origins. Penumbra has a very special place in my heart. Initially I pirated them to try them out, but I ended up buying them within a couple hours. Funny enough, I was lazy and just kept playing the pirated version until I got stuck due to some bug. I reported it on the forums, thinking it was a legit bug, and I got a reply from you (iirc) saying something like "yes, the pirated versions don't work properly". lol, I felt so bad... 🍻
I played Soma for the first time in my life a month ago. Yesterday i finished Amnesia The Dark Descent. Needless to say i started back in the begining , i ll play all penumbra games and then pick up with the rest of Amnesia games !
yeh unfortunately I was unable to hear most of it when the game music started, turning on the automatic subtitles did helped a little but the AI can't do miracles yet.
I would love to learn how to use the editor to make mods and maps for amnesia the bunker. Cant find any proper guide though. Amnesi athe bunker is my fav game, it never gets old. Every week I play it on the survival mod on shell shock, no save runs. Very fun.
Tell us honestly, was The Dark Descent heavily based on the Shalebridge Cradle from Thief III? Amnesia's prison level's resemblance to it is astounding. Also you seem thinner than before, are you ok health-wise?
perfect time to announce a dark descent remake right haha right
TDD doesn't NEED a remake, if anything Penumbra needs a remake.

Yes but it's a developer first.

Penumbra tech demo blew my 12 year old mind in 2007 with its realism and scares. I genuinely still find that old version of the engine impressive.
Much love from Massachusetts. Thank you so much for all of the amazing memories over these decades.

If you're talking about not only indi-studios, you're not right. Valve have their Source 1 and 2, for example
