GTR Southern Class 377 - FANTASTIC VALUE FOR MONEY!! - Standard Class Review (London to Southampton)

  • Hello, and welcome back to a new train trip report on my channel. For this video, I am travelling with one of Govia Thameslink Railway's Southern branded trains for a great value trip from London to Southampton.
    Today's trip on one of the UK's most ubiquitous train types begins in London Victoria, a large commuter terminus serving both GTR's Southern brand, as well as trains operated by Southeastern. After departure the train travels through Clapham Junction, purportedly the station with the highest throughput of scheduled services in all of Europe.
    Next the train speeds to Gatwick Airport (also calling at Easy Croydon along the way), completing the airport hop in just 33 minutes. This is almost as fast as the so-called Gatwick Express, but don't worry, a seperate and interesting video is coming on that. Afterwards the next place of note is Horsham, where the train divides, allowing the rear portion to serve more stations along its way to Bognor Regis. Next the train passes Havant, where some trains go to Portsmouth, before finally arriving into Southampton Central, while skirting the Solent.
    Whilst GTR's Southern brand has been under controversy in recent years due to poor performance, and its attempts to eliminate safety critical staff (among other things), I was pleasantly surprised by the service, and of course the price was particularly exceptional. Watch the video to find out more!

    This route was an old staple of mine both from when I moved back to Southampton after university and from the time in between when I commuted into London from Whyteleafe. The lack of advance tickets on (what was then) South West Trains unless you started at least as far west as Brockenhurst made this slower route all the more compelling. I think for a while at university I took the coach - especially as my rare trips to London were often late evening returns (vividly recall one in 2008 to see Millionaire recorded at Elstree - the Victoria line was rammed with stunned Arsenal fans after the famous 4-4 draw with Spurs, was genuinely the quietest crowded train I've ever been on!) - but usually I did this. Great memories.

    I prefer the "Southern" route into Victoria rather than the "SWR" into Waterloo as it is a much prettier route and often much cheaper as you have shown. I did however get an advance ticket - Portsmouth to Cambridge ---with SWR for £6.25 recently. The installation of power sockets will be a welcome addition.

    Thank you for a very fair review. I like the 377s, and generally they ride well. Unfortunately, the Mid Sussex line from Horsham to Arundel and Ford on the West Coastway route, needs a substantial upgrade ! Hence the very rough ride ! The 377s are far superior to the SWR units for a long run also. Many thanks.

  • @KempSimon
    @KempSimon 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    About half of GTR New Southern Railway's Class 377 Electric Multiple Units have 240 Volt, 3-Pin power sockets in the First Class seating area. There is also a 3-Pin socket in the circulation area by the sliding doors, marked "Not for Public Use", which provides stabilised 240 Volts power for use by the cleaners when the train is being serviced at a depot. I've occasionally used the latter sockets to re-charge my laptop computer batteries during the course of a journey without ever being reprimanded or told to desist by an On-Board Supervisor. At one time passengers travelling First Class with Southern between Barnham and Victoria were entitled to one free cup of tea or coffee per leg of journey but this perk stopped a long time ago. Now the only benefit of upgrading to First Class - which can be done for £5, irrespective of journey length, on Saturdays, Sundays and Bank Holidays - is the antimacassar (NOT a "bib") on the headrest of your seat. What I like least about the Class 377's are the instruments of torture which masquerade as "arm rests". They are not padded, merely covered with a thin layer of fabric, and on a long journey become really uncomfortable. Southern is ahead of the game in one respect - each toilet has a unique numerical code and if you discover any deficiency (such as lack of water to flush the WC) you can send a text message to the depot so the problem can be addressed when the train reaches its destination. Incidentally, there is space to stow suitcases between the backs of the seats as well as in the sparsely-distributed luggage stacks. Congratulations on getting such excellent value for money with your advanced purchase, railcard-discounted travel ticket. There are bargains to be had if you know where to look for them, especially where two different Train Operating Companies are competing for business along the same transport corridor!

    Thanks for the video. This was indeed great value for money, and I guess this is exceptional. Comfort seems to be reasonable, although doing this trip in a 3 + 2 configuration would be torture. I travelled between the two cities a lot when I was a student. I remember that the trains operating out of Waterloo bore some resemblance to the unit you showed but were quite a bit more comfortable.

    Great to see a review of the train which I have travelled on the most in my life as I live in the southern network. I had forgotten the had such good seats (nowadays I keep ending up on Class 700s. Personaly I would normally ready and take the SWR Route to Southampton not because it is faster though it is partly because it is one of the few third rail lines in England to have a 100mph line speed but mainly because the Class 444 just feel like much nicer trains which are built for a fast long distance Route unlike the Class 377s.

    The 2+2 seating with tables are to be found in the two outer end carriages in those 377 units configured that way, so avoid the middle two cars if you don't fancy riding in the 2+3 sections!! The newer 377's mainly now used on the London suburban routes on Southern, are 2+2 throughout, but less comfy (they don't usually venture onto the Victoria - Southampton/Portsmouth routes though) and have had phone charger sockets installed from new. I'm glad to hear the older batch units are having them installed now.

    I was going to comment how I used to work at near Victoria and would relax at the 'spoons' watching the ebb & flow of rush hour before heading to the 'stow'.
    Or, how that when I visit London now, I.will usually stay at East Croydon as the hotel prices combined with connections to the city or West End are unbeatable in London.
    But, instead I will comment on how the antimacassar's are probably to protect the seats from all the 1st Class Champagne quaffing!!!

    Wow that just brought back some old memories of my commuter days from Pulborough, not all good. The scenery on that line between Horsham and Arundel is beautiful, particularly southbound when you come up to the "wall" of the south downs approaching Amberley. Let's see if the 2+2 seating survives the refurbishment. I see you were in 107 which was in the first batch of 20 that was delivered with 2+2 throughout. Were non-driving cars still the same or have they standardized the fleet with 2+3 in all the trailer cars?

    Having travelled to Southampton multiple times, via this route, SWR AND on the National express coaches, I'd personally have to say it all depends on if you can get a good deal. The Southern service was an enjoyable ride, and was cheap (admittedly I travelled on this leg using a Southern Daysave the last time I travelled), and I also believe that SWR is good for people who need to get there quickly, however in terms of comfort on the Rails, it would have to Go to Southern *if* you can get a good deal
    Overall though, out of Southern and National Express, I would have to choose the coach. The journey time can actually be shaved by about 20 minutes on the coach, and is also relatively cheap and good value when compared with the train. A one way journey from Victoria Coach Station to Southampton cost me £6 and that came with the added extra of seat reservation, and you can get the extra legroom seats which would have more legroom than an electrostar could ever have for about 2 pounds extra. I've seen seats go on the route for as low as £3 before without the need for any discount, which is outstanding value for money considering it stops off at places en route and takes about the same time.
