- In a new partnership with the New Swan Shakespeare Center, University of California, Irvine, the Von Hügel Institute is delighted to share its 2024 online Shakespeare Lecture Series: 'Shakespeare's Virtues: Three Lectures on Living'.
In ancient moral traditions around the world, virtues such as fortitude, judgement, trustworthiness, and compassion are life skills that strengthen individuals and communities. Drama offers a special platform for ethical inquiry, by approaching virtue as process and problem from the multiple angles afforded by different characters in challenging situations.
In this series of interactive lectures, scholar, teacher, and dramaturg Professor Julia Reinhard Lupton, University of California, Irvine, shows how Shakespeare’s virtues connect reason to passion, characters to context, and art to life. The lectures will include live readings from the plays by actor Ava Burton and responses by Dr Maria Devlin McNair. N.B. Responses by Dr Maria Devlin McNair not included in the recording.
This lecture was recorded via Zoom on 12 November 2024 by Brigid Graff, executive officer of the VHI.
‘Shakespeare’s Virtues’ is part of a larger Shakespeare initiative, ‘Shakespeare and the Common Good?’, set up in collaboration with Shakespeare at Notre Dame; an initiative that explores how Shakespeare both succeeds and fails to galvanise shared pursuits of the common good while also recognising the rich opportunities Shakespeare’s plays offer us to reflect more deeply on our contemporary world and our lived experiences in it. The Von Hügel Institute is delighted to partner with New Swan as part of this initiative.
The Von Hügel Institute for Critical Catholic Inquiry exists to promote mutual enrichment between the best of the secular academy and the Catholic traditions of theology, philosophy and ethics through events, research, and contributions to the public square.
