NBA 2K Playgrounds 2 - Microtransactions And Grind Edition

  • NBA 2K Playgrounds 2 is slated for earlier this year however it was pushed back to October 16th after a partnership was announced with 2K games. Now that the game is out it's clear what their strategy was here adding microtransactions and a serious grind to get everything without paying actual money. This is a large turn around from the first game that provided cards quickly with no microtransactions.

When the CEO at EA makes $32 million in compensation in 2018, and his company and die hard apologists claim this is the only way to stay afloat in the game's industry, then not only is it lying or very poor judgment, but also exploititive of their customers, AKA, you and me. When I see someone spend $1000 on microtransactions, I think, sure, it's not my money, but if it was, I'd rather have donated it to Doctors Without Borders, or another legit, credible, responsible not-for-profit organization or cause. When I see greedy human beings like Andrew Wilson make that kind of money and shoe horn microtransactions into full priced games, I think, huh.. why are their developers paid so little, and why they feel the need to employ lobbyists to bribe politicians, aka lobbying, with money that could go back into their staff or game development.

Honestly, due to the backlash 2K received with NBA 2k18, I thought they would pull back the reigns on the microtransactions for 2K19, but considering they responded to the criticism by worsening character building grind, I skipped purchasing 2K19 this year and won't bother with Playgrounds either. I could forgive 2K if they listened and made changes requested from the community regarding how invasive their microtransaction system was in 2k18, but they basically gave critics (like myself) the middle finger and doubled down on this scummy practice. I won't be buying 2K basketball games until they make serious changes to the series that don't involve attempting to milk the consumer for every penny they have.

The only two reasonable options and what I mean by reasonable is getting the game at a good price for what it is, you must buy the game when it’s on a really good sale and then either play a crap ton of it and grind it out or if you get it on a good enough sale and you spend the $10 in virtual currency, it’ll come out to $20 or less because $20 is the max that you should spend on this type of game. It’s a good game except for the micro transactions. As of today late May early June 2022, it’s on sale for less than eight dollars. That’s how I’m getting it because I’m in the mood for some basketball but I’m not willing to spend over $20 max on this game.

Its not that I defend EA, because I don't but micro transactions in FIFA is more "acceptable" than in this game because FIFA cost much more to produce than this. If 2k has all characters locked and suggest grind or pay...just make the game free to play

Such a shame but still something compels me to try this game.. I guess i love street basketball.. Does the switch version have all the online modes of it's bigger cousins (PS4 etc)? IGN gave the PS4 one 8/10.

watching videos of nba street 2 (which I still own but currently don't have a console set up to play it) and it reminded me of the energy and excitement that offers.. I can just tell this doesn't have the "it" factor that Nba Street has.. I might give it a miss.

To be fair. They have a similar model in the first one. All roster pack (10usd). But grinding packs was faster. Which was kinda fun.. A lil reward after leveling up

  • @Jackruby22
    @Jackruby22 6 ปีที่แล้ว

Well that's decided it for me. I didn't put that much time into the first one because the switch release was handled so badly but this overview has made me want to revisit and give it a second chance, as on the surface there doesn't seem like much of the presentation has changed. Graphics don't seem to have improved much.

I'm confused as to why everyone is so upset about microtransactions in a game that you don't have to purchase them in. If you play the game you can earn baller and gold points to unlock packs. Yeah it will take awhile but that's how you keep ppl playing.

  • @adamrasmussen9939

Its pretty obvious why they pulled the original one off the market. They knew there was going to be a certain segment of gamers (me) who would go and spite buy the original just because it was more fair. I actually went looking in the Switch store for it. Nope. Not there.
$10 isn't too crazy of a price, but the extreme grind, pretty much forces you into it. Getting a gold pack every 10 or so games would turn me off pretty quick. Getting one every 2 or 3 games, might actually incentivize people to buy in, after they get to sample 10 or 12 players for free in their first few play sessions.

I'm pretty disappointed in the path this game went down towards. When the first NBA Playgrounds game came out, I got it on the Switch and was very supportive of it while Saber Interactive was having the issues of trying to get online onto the Switch version.
After that update eventually came out, I started to get some suspicion with Saber because of the lack of updates for NBA Playgrounds after the online update came out (NBA Playgrounds on the Switch still is missing the 3 Point contest mode that was featured on the other consoles). Should also mention something that the updates for Shaq Fu: A Legend Reborn were very quiet considering the fact the game was originally scheduled to come out last Fall and that went silent for some time until it was given a release date in 2018. Doesn't help the fact that Shaq Fu: A Legend Reborn is an incomplete game seeing as they failed to meet some of the game modes promised in the Indiegogo, like a Co-Op mode, tournament mode and create a fighter as a few examples.
When NBA Playgrounds 2 was announced, I started to lose faith with Saber because of how they're leaving NBA Playgrounds on the Switch especially as an unfinished game due to the fact they rushed its release originally and now wanted more money for a better version of the same game that came out a year prior. Then came the delay and eventually the announcement that 2K was helping with it and you can see where this had lead to today with the microtransactions. I think I will just go back to play NBA Jam: On Fire Edition seeing as that game is a lot more fun to enjoy and don't need to worry about having microtransactions shoved in my face to unlock a player
Tl;dr: Saber Interactive messed up the NBA Playground series ever since it started

Hating in game transactions obviously puts us into the minority. The business model works or they would pull the reigns back. Lets be realistic though, up-selling is a tale as old as time, and a completely legit way to make a fortune. Chevrolet advertises a $22K Camaro knowing that when you show up at the dealership you'll want the $40K RS version.

I earned about 15600 pts from playing 2-3 exhibition games and 1 season on normal difficulty. That included about 2000 pts for winning the title. It seems to vary from game to game how many pts I earned, anywhere from 150 in a really bad game to close to 1000 for games that I did a lot in. I think you can earn more pts for doing tricks and getting power ups and stuff.
