I lived through this particular flood. I lived right up the hill where that water is coming down from. I lost everything, the cottage behind me came off the foundation, this water rushed through my cottage and was ceiling deep in the back area where it rushed in, it was rushing from the back door through to the front door, at this same rate. I couldn't hear anything, my cats were gone, my appliances swirled around me, it was a raging river. I was yelling for help but nothing could be done. The cottage that broke apart behind me clogged up the culvert, which was also blocked by huge boulders and two cars. It was intense. I was not leaving without my cats. I held the screen door in with all the might to keep cats from washing away, and bracing against the door to keep from getting pushed out. It was like getting beat up by a linebacker. It lasted about 5 hrs before it died down enough to get out safely. Amazingly, my cats survived. One was swimming and drenched and caked with black mud debri, one was wet and muddy on her legs and belly, and the last one was tucked way up in the furthest corner of my only tiny closet. It was a miracle for sure. I didn't even have shoes anymore, no clothes, no furniture, all my jewelry and brand new futon and pretty little chairs and my books and tapestries and art supplies, and my little garden of 5 thriving tomato plants......gone. A lot of personal growth and shifts in my perceptions happened that day. It's been quite a healing journey. I survived the experience because all of my cats survived. I'm still so grateful. My neighbor behind me lost hers. She was swept up the mountainside a ways, broken leg, lost everything...including her cats. I felt so lucky. There are amazing insights that come from these traumas. We can survive them, if we learn how to. Loss is loss to be grieved, and also to find freedom in other ways. Anyway, long story short.....I sat in a crisis kind of meditation that night it happened, almost pleading to know WHY. I got......'it's just an experience to have. That's all.' And THAT made perfect sense to me. 🕉

Thats so crazy! Was this because of the fires that took out all the vegetation? Great filming too, I hate it when I see people film stuff but don't hold the camera steady or don't even aim the camera at the subject so this was def nice.

As a resident I can tell you, it was most definitely because of the fire the year before. We get heavy rains here alot. The destruction of the topsoil from the forest fire made this a catastrophy. It was very frightening to be in it. Whole houses we're coming down Canon Ave.

Hi Matt - I'm working on the 150th Anniversary Exhibit at the Manitou Springs Heritage Center and doing a story about the resilience of this city after many historic floods over the years. To my knowledge, this 2013 flood is the only one caught on film. I would love to use portions of your video for the exhibit and interview you for an "Oral History". Please let me know if you're interested. Thanks much! Lynn

i wonder how much damage the poppyseed got... if I'm not mistaken, that is the building that you see across the creek from your apartments. i do know my grandpas church (Saint Andrews), which is right behind the building that they filmed from got extensive damage in the basement. i was gone that summer, but when i came back most everything near the creek was washed out. luckily our house didn't get any damage, as its closer to the trading post and up in the hills

+Phil Whipple After the flood - on that particular bend - they had put up a brick wall instead of railing. What concerns me is that they didn't do it on the other side of the river because if another flash comes it will just be diverted to the building across the river.

Lindsay Grove no, it's pretty cleaned up. a small town like Manitou, it ended up being a lot to clean up. The school now has flood plans for students who live up in the mountains (that also got flooded) it was pretty tough but it would be an amazing town of there wasn't so many people there now. Legalization of Marijuana raised rent and that's what pushed me out of the town. I hope it shapes up one of these days, my kids miss their friends so much. great town. *used to be a great town.

  • @BillyMinnow

Why is everyone commenting on the car? 6:36 The car is fine. Unless it was running the entire time, it's fine. No water is getting in the engine, transmission, or electrical. The exhaust would be an issue if it were running. In all honesty, I doubt much water even got in the car (which would be the only concern, mildew).

Been there, seen that in Manitou. Who owns the silver car ? Who cares, it isn't you. Do they have flood insurance? Who caress, it isn't your car. These are things you have no control over and cannot change. Worry about something you can affect.
