I would bet that more time was spent in developement of 'streamlining' the android os functionality than would have been necessary to ship with a tablet version of android and create a hands-free centered app to ship with the device. That app could handle all of the advertised 'features' but more importantly not omit features that people who are interested in this type of product may expect from a tech product at that price point.
This device, as described by Kyle, seems like an exercise in showing off some of the different tech that Google now owns.
      Cheers

Since this video came out griping on the max there has been numerous updates, and added apps like Hulu, Netflix, Disney plus etc..Most of the gripes have been hashed out. The only gripes I still have with this is that it's too expensive for a display with a 800 resolution, and the limited TH-cam control. I don't have the problem with random ads because it's signed into my premium account, but the limited functions of their own website is sad..

Quite a bit of misinformation here and underutilised in your testing.
It's a voice assistant. Hence it's in the 'home' or now the 'nest' range - it's not designed to be or meant to be a fully fledged tablet experience. You can ask for and watch TH-cam vids by name or search query, cast any video to it from TH-cam or Netflix and others, ask for and receive a whole host of search results. You can drop in on your CCTV cameras (Nest or others), it has a built-in Nest camera too. We use ours to stream our little daughters room as a baby monitor (nest camera in her room, and no we aren't worried about some weirdo hacking into our cameras as have a secure mesh network) and when the doorbell goes the visitor pops up on the screen where you can speak to them.
You can stream Spotify, Google Play Music (or Tune-In radio and BBC radio player here in the UK) and have it as part of a multi-room speaker group. In my kitchen I have the hub and at the other end a Google Max speaker for stereo sound.
We have ours connected to Google Photos so it displays an always-up-to-date digital photo frame.
Yeah, I'm locked into their ecosystem, but rather that than Amazon's which is the equivalent of the Ring doorbells Vs the Google-owned Nest Doorbell. Just a bit shite looking and mainstream, and everyone has them...like an iPhone!
Personally as I'm neither a criminal or a terrorist, or live in North Korea, I'm not overreacting about being listened too or watched.
Plus, personalised adverts ... rather that than irrelevant ones - how do we think this whole search and smart device thing hangs together?

Make sure to update your video:) There have been many improvements in the last two years including being able to link Disney plus, Netflix, Hulu, TH-cam which also carries your purchased google play movies in it's library now even, and a few others. While there is still room for improvements, it's definitely not this basic anymore.

Just picked up the new normal one and it's perfect for what I need it for and what it's made for, extra lil screen in my kitchen that can play music and cast videos to. I think as long as they're priced well and cheap then it's gonna be great plus nice to see it can control other home devices. Fair call though if I had paid 2.5x times the price for the big one I would probably be annoyed, that being said I want the bigger speaker haha but that's not worth the extra price!

From another PC enthusiast's perspective on the Google Home Hub that wanted to finally take the plunge onto making my home "smart". I didn't like it's limitations either so after finding the requirements to run Google Home/Assistant I went looking for an Android tablet with close to the same specs. All it needed to have is at least Android Lollipop (some sites said Marshmallow, but whatever, I can root the device and put a custom ROM on it), 2.4 GHz WI-fI, and Bluetooth (I couldn't find a specific spec, but most GA devices have at least 4.1). I looked on Ebay and found SEVERAL tablets in the $50 to 100 dollar price point that easily covered these specs. I ended up finding a HTC Nexus 9 for 50 bucks! It has BT 4.1, 2.4 and 5 GHz a/b/n/ac Wi-Fi, and updatable to Nougat 7.1.1, so all the bases are covered, PLUS it's a Google endorsed product. BONUS! Now the microphone issue, since a tablet's mic isn't suited for picking up voices from a distance. I picked up a EDUTIGE EIM-001 far field microphone for under 30 dollars on Amazon. So I now have a much more capable device with full Android Nougat and all of the full Play Store apps. The resolution is FAR superior with the Nvidia Tegra K1 chipset and decent stereo sound with HTC's "Boom Sound". Once I invested in a case/stand for the tablet, I'm still under $100 dollars for a much better Google Home Hub experience and have the option to go portable with the tablet if I want also!

it's around a ~$200 tablet that is meant to supplement your NEST and Google home experience.. you returned it because it's not an an worthy of your entertainment needs. The hub acts as a screen for your nest cams, a reliable google assistant, and you can cast anything you want to watch from your phone. It's also a great slideshow for pictures. idk what you expected from the hub max.

I understand the criticism from when this device came out by Bitwit. My usage with this machine have been great so far for my needs. I keep mine in my kitchen, far away from our family room and screen. I use it to look up and follow recipes while cooking. My house uses it as a speaker for music while cooking and for family dinners. And when I am away from home I can use the camera to monitor anyone in the kitchen and talk to my family with the Duo app. Eventually when we get outdoor and a doorbell camera it will be the monitor we use when in the kitchen. So for my family we use this several times daily but the barrier of entry was steep.

This is exactly what I was looking for, a real review, not a stupid open box or someone that is always all excited and hyped for no reason. Thank you for helping with my decision. I was looking for a stationary unit that would help on the kitchen and on day to day stuff, that we could also use to check teachers emails, watch TH-cam recipes that many times has information on the notes and other day to day stuff but without having to hunt down the tablet. The Nest hub sure is not it.

  • @alexandsimba

You were expecting a tablet for $100-$230? Come on Kyle. This is more of a smart radio or clock that also happens to have chromecast built in to it. Your expectations were set way too high for $230 hardware with Google assistant built into it. I have 2 google home hub and use them everyday. The one in my bedroom helps me plan out my day, and one the one my living room helps me manage lighting and youtube playlist while I'm enjoying a meal. Is someone at the door or calling my phone? "Okay Google, pause the video (video paused on my TV)". Did I miss something interesting in the video? "Okay Google, rewind the video by 10 seconds." One of the videos on the playlist turned out to be boring or clickbait? "Okay Google, play the next video."
This is actually one the only Google devices that I can recommend that didn't feel like it was Google just slapping their name on it (Google nest security cams with no free recording and Google wifi router with lack of advance settings).

I am getting one of these free of charge later on today. My broadband contract was over, and I was shopping around, I came across Vodafone doing broadband for £23, but the next day they started advertising the Google Home Nest Max promotion, which was £28 a month instead of £23. I cancelled my original order so that I could get this, as it still works out a hell of a lot cheaper than the £40 that my old provider wanted to charge me. You have to watch a lot of adverts on a computer when you watch any youtube content, so pretty much you cannot really complain about them showing you adverts on this device. If you want to avoid the adverts then pay for youtube premium.

This thing doesn't work! When I use duo calling the other side can't hear me - the mic is off with no reason! To solve this, I then have to cancel the call and call again! The meeting feature doesn't work either! There is a blank white page in the middle of the screen! And when you file in a report, you can not add your own picture to illustrate the problem. And finally the Nest protect is not integrated properly with Google home so you cannot see the camera from google, only nest! and if you turn on 'home monitoring features' the Nest will malfunction and won't use the home/away feature so it will send you an intruder alert and send you your own picture! unbelievable!

Completely agree with your 2 main issues. The lack of abity to tweak a search manually by text in TH-cam is so painful and the lack of Netflix blows. Other than that it's OK. The duo calling is pretty good. Gestures are basic but good. Sound is good. In hindsight a docked tab with Bluetooth speaker is better but doesn't look as good

I just recently bought my Google Nest (The smaller brother to the Google Nest Hub Max) and I experienced everything you mentioned in this video. The Amazon Echo Show, seems to have way more features than this. The price I bought my Google Nest Hub $59.99 vs the Google Nest Hub Max $239.99 that leaves the consumer lots to think about! I understand most of these shortcomings. My advice to those here shopping is to get those home hub (not max). It has many of the same limitations, but as a kitchen device it is great. No camera (a plus in my book), always on mic with a physical mute mic switch, and worth it despite the shortcomings listed even if just for these things while in or passing through the kitchen:
    "OK Google, ..."
    1. "Add butter to my shopping list" (Lists can be shared with spouse and are then accessible via phone browser or assistant if you really want to talk to your phone at the store.)
    2. "How many tablespoons are in 1 cup?" or other random fact question that you can usually count on assistant to be useful for like "Will it rain today?" even when your phone is charging somewhere else.
    3. "Set a timer for 5 minutes" (or alarm, reminder)
    4. "Play xyz on Spotify/youtube/etc."
    5. "Read me the headlines"
If it did just those things, I'd still find it worth the value. And even the smaller one does those things. The value of being able to get that just those things done I'm staring into the fridge, cooking a meal, passing through the kitchen on my way out the door is totally worth it even if there's a lot of potential value left on the table. (but imo get the one without a camera and don't put even that in the bedroom or somewhere else more sensitive.)

    • @think_ffs3934
      @think_ffs3934 5 ปีที่แล้ว

I should also point out that you can do most of that without the screen, but then you would eliminate bonus options like "show me my shopping list" or "show me my calendar" and the option to view a youtube video on some cooking topic... Even if the searching isn't perfect and casting is an extra step, it's nice to have the option IMHO.

So im enjoying using it in my vanity area where i can just talk to it to play music and cast any youtube vids while im getting ready. There was also this time where i coudnt find my phone and i asked it wher it was and it rang my phone. haha maybe its just the smart assistant thats making me like it alot. Im thinking of buying multiple Hubs and spreading it around the house so i can blast synced music all over the house while im doing chores.

You can cast to the google nest from your phone or tablet, close the TH-cam app on the phone, and it will continue to play on the google nest. That way both of your devices are not tied up. A work around for not having a keyboard on the nest hub.

  • @Detroitblue
    @Detroitblue 3 ปีที่แล้ว

I don't have the max but the reason I have the hub is because it is the control center of the nest system. Therefore I think you have mis-aligned expectations for its use. This was not meant for surfing at all really . The number one purpose of the hub in my opinion is to see what the cameras are showing you, see who is at the door or even what the other systems status are. Secondary to that is as an information center. You can ask google what is the weather this week , what time does Homedepot close, how many people died in the earthquake in Peru , what is the exchange rate of the dollar to Euro and that kind of thing. 3rd is that it would also allow you it instantly take notes and make reminders for appointments while you are busy in your kitchen. And down on the list is to put some nice sounding music in the air or as a media player of some kind. You can't just pic exactly what you want but I Imagine you could have programmed playlists you can access on youtube. But I would say for the stuff you are vexed about well you got off track of the point of the hub. However being able to cast to the hub is the fix for whatever you wished it could do for you like a tablet can if you so desire. Other wise go ahead and sit down with your laptop or tablet and have at it. Finally if what you paid for this is your big concern, like a couple hundred bucks, well hell we can all live without a lot of this crap if you are on a tight budget like that. These are luxuries of convenience .

Also the microphone in the TH-cam search bar does not function. Another complaint is that in order for the nest cam to work you have to migrate your nest cam account to Google, I have six other nest cams and I do not want to migrate the account. There are flaws involved with migrating the nest cam account to Google. There are additional problems with this but they are too numerous to waste my breath on so I'm returning it and will probably buy a laptop

I bought the smaller Google Home hub for primary use as a digital photo frame that displays photos from Google Photos. That part works well except when you turn the lights off at night it goes to a dim clock... You can adjust the sensitivity of how dark it has to be before engaging but you can't turn it off... WTF?
I sometimes cast Twitch, Facebook or TH-cam videos from my phone, but there is no way to do that without the phone which is silly in 2019.
The added price of the new Nest Hub Max is unjustified. To say this is a new product as a defense for the lack of functionality isn't reasonable. This has been out for around 2 years hasn't it (original Google Home hub)? It doesn't seem like much has changed since launch....

  • @flyme-z7b

The WORST thing about my Google Max Hub is that is loses connection to my Google 'doorbell camera' (newest version). It drives me nuts. I need to monitor my front door Nest/Google Doorbell Camera from my home office desk to keep an eye out for deliveries, arrivals, etc. It works great... for around 15-20 minutes then the Google Max Hub errors stating, "Camera feed is not available" and I lose the picture. The odd thing is that the camera is still working just fine because I can see it on my phone or tablet but not the Max Hub which is the reason why I bought this thing to begin with. All Google can offer as help is to reset everything, which of course I have done many times and does not solve the issue. My WIFI setup is topnotch and leaves nothing to be desired so I do not believe that my system is at fault here. The Max Hub is actually a great unit for other purposes but the fact it will not stay connected is aggravating and there is no solution in sight and no way to actually diagnose what is going on from a more technical standpoint.
