- In October of 2018, hundreds of young conservatives of color met up in Washington, DC, for the first ever Young Black Leadership Summit: a four-day conference that featured speeches from conservative actress Stacey Dash and firebrand Candace Owens, a trip to the White House to hear Trump speak, and a rare chance for young, black Republicans to get together and network IRL.
VICE’s Lee Adams went to the summit to talk firsthand with young, black conservatives about what drew them to the Republican party, along with what kind of backlash they’ve faced from the black community for going public with their political views.
To find out more about the movement, he also tagged along with Antonia Okafor-an outspoken Second Amendment activist-on a hunting trip in northwestern Iowa with Steve King, a House Rep who’s been widely criticized for his racist comments.
Lastly, he met up with Shekinah Geist, a black Republican and budding social media influencer, and sat in on a conversation between her and a group of peers from the local black student union who challenged her on her support for President Trump.

If your friend hates you for holding a certain belief, they were never your friend.
Well, some people confuse hating certain beliefs with hating the person who holds the belief.
I think this is one of our biggest problems as a nation. We hate people instead of ideologies or ideas.
Actually, even a lot of ideas we shouldn’t hate. We might disagree with them because we believe they harm people or our society. But we should reserve hatred to the most odious of ideas, like bigotry, racism, classism, etc.
There are a few friends I’ve had to step back from these past years as they’ve bought into false narratives and embraced hateful rhetoric. I wish I was stronger, but it sometimes it really shakes me to the core how dogmatic and drastic they are. I can’t seem to pull them out of lies that are easy to debunk. And the mere fact that I’m a Democrat has painted me with some filter that they just disdain. It’s hurts quite a lot.
It’s extremely hard when a group of Republican friends begin gripping about Democrats and how stupid and disrespectful we are. They’ll go on about some meme or post they read on Facebook and get so indignant and upset at “those Liberals.” And literally every time it occurs, they have been fed a bad story. It’s either half the story or simply incorrect info. The latest one was how the NYTimes disrespects President Trump because they call him “Mr. Trump.” And I just have to bite my tongue because it’s simple newspaper protocol. All periodicals do this, use “President” the first time, then only their last name after that. At least NYT adds “Mr.” And they’ve done it since the 1850’s. But do you think they listen? Nope. They just get angry with me and write me off. It doesn’t matter how respectful, gentle, deferential I am. Sometimes I just can’t help but cry at night over how these beloved people can be so mean - how they can no longer see me, see my heart.

My favorite scenes was when the Black conservatives and Black Liberals sit down and have a conversation. Both sides find out they agree on more than they think.
Yep I agree, it looks (to me at least) that both parties gained something from that. Near the end of the meeting they both agreed with ones other that attacking each other was counterproductive.

I'm a white guy...when I grew up I was an army brat - meaning my dad was in us army. As a kid I heard things about racism when I was off post or not in DOD (department of defence) schools, where I grew up everyone around me was white, black, brown, red, yellow, etc. And i never really noticed, they were just my friends or neighbor kids.
When i grew up i joined the us army, and you know one of the first things i was told in basic was that
"there is no longer any color but green, the us army is the largest gang in the world, and and those that are in uniform like you, those to your left and right, are your brothers and sisters, they are family"
I would like to say, I am an American.
My blood is red.
My spirit is stamped with Life & Liberty.
And I have many brothers and sisters.

First, I want to thank you for everything you are doing for our Country! For me , I knew I was always different the kids would always bully me, and I never knew why? I never thought it was because of my color, because when I was growing up we were segregated
whites with whites blacks with blacks, when I was in the six grade we had our first three black kids in my school I saw a lot of kids pick on them too. I remember feeling really bad for them, because they were different just like me. I grew up in foster homes and the kids somehow knew it not that I had told them but I had three other sisters going to the same school, so it could have been one of them that told someone and you know how news travels.... I was different because I hand made clothes, and hand me downs. I really looked like poor white trash, and I was called that many times when I became friends with my black friends. The four of us were called all kinds of names and beat up through no fault of our own. I had no control over my life. I was told when to eat how to eat when to take a bath, when to brush my teeth what to wear and what not to wear when to talk when not to talk, and there was nothing wrong with because to me the foster parents taught me manners taught me how to respect my elders 10 through 13 yrs old. one out of 19 fosters homes.
I related to my friends more so than anyone else in that school. So thinking back in those days I know why I was bullied called names. one I was poor, and I was friends with my black friends just because we were different. That didn't make us bad people it just made us different than they. Today where were at is no different from then to now... We are more divided than ever before and its very sad that we just can't be left alone without getting black lashed for just wanting something different then what other ppl want.

That's interesting. However my parents who served in the military for over 20 years did not have that same experience. My father, who by the way was an officer in the Army, remembers being called the N-word by his superior and then being told there was nothing he could do about it.

in conclusion
Republican legislation has helped minority communities and those in the lower class be more financially dependant and has better cultural impact than democratic legislation which heavily regulates the economy and hurts poor minority business owners.

this is my third time coming back to this video.. i actually really appreciated the point shekinah made stating that true pro-blackness includes all perspectives/people and you can’t pick and choose. it MUST include uplifting and progressing the entire community, not just a section. this goes for all black people, we need to look more towards infrastructure, economics, education, healthcare all of these subsections will ensure the success of our community.

What I was also surprised with is the interviewer using the color of skin as a descriptor instead of the political party or gender or character. That is an underlying problem with Liberals. They judge every book by its cover.
Never had a bad experience, if someone is more qualified, they get the job, I see it as an opportunity to find a better way. Life is too short to blame others.

Vice, I'm recently found you and you guys Rock. I absolutely love your message. As a 52 yr old white guy who has supported one race the human race my entire life. I am so tired of being called a racist. The worst part it's even by my black friends Ive known since I was a teen. So many are discrediting my views just because I am white. I know capitalism and leaning right is the most productive form of govt. To see black Americans leaning right makes me feel so good. I'm aware that 90% of blacks have voted Democrat for years because they've been told Dems stand for the oppressed. It's not true. Black Americans will have more opportunities by the Republican party. The image blacks have been told about right wing is not true. Yes there is still a race issue in America and I hate it, but we cannot continue to let blacks feel like victims. Yes it was a really good piece, but unintentionally. You can see they wanted this to go another way, It's so obvious.. But yes it was glorious and even better that it had the exact opposite reaction they were probably going for.

A welcome change
As a filmmaker, I can still spot a bunch of bias in this editing. Like they pan to the "teleprompter" when Trump is talking because they want to portray him in a bad light (everyone reads off of teleprompters, but you never saw them do this to Obama). You also have to pay attention to the background music they play in certain parts. Bottom line is, Vice tried making this a hit piece, but they didn't get the narrative they wanted, mostly because these young black conservatives are way more intelligent than anyone working for Vice.

@@nyc4233 I can't speak about Fox in general since I don't watch it much. But Tucker is fairly balanced, regardless of his opinions. Seen some serious crap from other Fox hosts though, so quite possible that the rest of the channel is about as terrible as CNN & co.
They all serve the same overlords anyway, so I'm actually stumped that Tucker manages to retain any sense of objectivity.

If you are interested in more actual investigative journalism I would highly recommended checking out CBC news. There is one journalist in particular who is just amazing. She is unbiased and shines light on serious topics. Can't vouch for the integrity of every journalist though. So sorry if there are some pricks on there.

I went to UNC and in retrospect it really was an atypical experience. Yeah there was the liberalism people associate with college. But there was a significant conservative presence. They even had a "conservative coming out" day.

Also there have been vice interviews I've watched where they cut the hell out of it. Then the full video gets released later and its not at all what the person they interviewed was trying to say.

How shameful that race is an assumption of how a person should vote.
No matter how unfair that assumption may be, race is statistically actually a very good indicator of how someone votes. If you see a group of black people, statistically, they vote 90% for Democrats. If you see a group of latinos and latinas, statistically, they vote about 70% for Democrats. Whites are the *only* swing voters in America. White people in America is the only racial group that votes about 50/50 for each party.
Its expected that if somebody doesn't like you then you would stay away from them. At least that's what normal people do. That Stockholm's syndrome situation is a mental issue.
There are reasons blacks vote the way they do. To act as though people are assuming is very dishonest.

The audio clipping and emotion swaying soundtrack prevent me from agreeing that it’s objective, but I will say that it is the most fair approach Vice has taken in at least 7 or 8 years.

The interviewer asked a lot of ignorant questions, such as saying conservatives have a history of treating minorities badly when in fact it was the democrats that did it. He relied on what he was told, rather than see if what he was asking was really true. Not impressed.
@@sarasmith5110 The important part is that, while yes inserting a personal misinformed reality, he properly portrayed the viewpoints of the subjects of the interview, which at the very least demonstrates an adherance to the Journalistic standard of telling the truth.

That he allowed the people he interviewed to fully answer the questions is what you are supposed to do. The questions he asked were insulting to the people he asked. .
@@sarasmith5110 My suspicion is that between the time of filming/interviewing and assembling the footage into the final product that some minds were changed because of the arguments being presented. Certainly this is a fairer portrail of right of centre individuals than is Vice's usual?* (They)* The interviewers's shortcomings do still need to be critisized, and I thank you for that. Perhaps some at Vice are so ideologically bent that they saw the final product as some sort of smear. I think a lot of moderate people will see the voting shift and start wondering then realising why.

Unfortunately that's not what being politically conservative means, at least not to Americans. Take me for instance, I'm a strong believer in my own Gaelic traditions. My family heritage is extremely important to me and I collect significant cultural symbols not just from my current country but the countries my ancestors came from.
Yet I am a leftist. A socialist specifically. Its precisely because I value my history and my family that I want to see it preserved and developed further, so that it may survive long into the future. Institutions that refuse to adapt will always eventually crumble. No matter what you believe politically, you can and should preserve your family history. Some come down to pure opinion but most liberal ideas are only good in theory. Things like gun control and socialism sound great in theory however there are massive flaws. Legally owned save at least 200,000 lives a year, while taking 10,000 lives. There are around 50,000 gun related homicides per year and 80% of all gun related crimes involve illegally obtained firearms. There has been no truly successful socialist country and eventually, and eventually someone will seize power and abuse it. I also used to support BLM because I saw the news headlines like “unarmed black man shot by police”. I ended up reading that news article and watched the body camera footage and the guy ran over the cop. I also hated anything conservative and thought that attacking someone with “racist” ideas was justified. I hated trump because all my friends were doing it. All I knew about his policies back then were from my friends and Twitter calling him a “racist” or “fascist”. I thought that he wanted to ban all immigration and wanted to purge Muslims. After seeing the other side’s argument and actually reading the article, I started to wonder what else was a lie. A lot of people on the left are actually really good people, just very mislead.
