  • ‪@MarkWintleFishing‬ The first part of the Dorset Stour I ever fished was at Blandford, and that was 50 years ago. Subsequently I fished it again a couple of times but it's been 35 years since my last visit to this particular stretch so on a glorious autumn day i revisited the water and fished a stick float.

It’s a great book, I’ve just finished it this morning. Lots of lightbulb moments when reading it, spotting the common themes from great anglers who all do it slightly differently. I’ve learned a lot from you too Mark, and my stick float fishing has become dramatically more successful over the last year or so. I’ve never had anyone to show me ‘the way’ and your videos have given me the confidence to keep working at it, knowing I’ve got the basics about right. Thanks a lot and a Happy Christmas to you

Thanks for all the content you’ve released this year. I agree, the stick float book is brilliant. Both books have improved my fishing. You have a good Christmas 🎅

Thanks for the appreciation. I'm still hoping to be able to put up an interview connected to the stick float book in the new year. Watch this space.

All the best to you. I'm always making plans for more videos, often thwarted by the weather and conditions but that's the challenge.

    Hi Mark,
As always enjoying your videos. Just read "stick float wizardry" and the variety of shotting patterns under this general heading of "stick float fishing". I thought it would make an interesting video if 2 or 3 rods were set up, each with a different stick float rig. Say, one with an Olivette down the line, one with shirt button on the drop, and maybe one with a centre taper shot. Run them through the same swim over the course of a session and see if one method stands out above the others?

Another enjoyable video Mark, and like you I'm loving the Wizardry book. I find it's one that after reading from cover to cover you can dive back in to different bits when you think about them, not unlike The Rising Antenna in that respect.
I have a question about the John Dean floats that I hope you can help with. I've got a few of the wire stemmed ones that I've never used. That's because I'm unsure of how they should be attached at the base. They have a small eye that seems to be whipped to the stem and is covered by plastic. Would you thread the line through the eye or simply slide a rubber over the lot? This would mean a thinner third rubber would be required to trap the line under the body at the top of the stem. Three different sized rubbers for one float seems a bit like overkill.
I'd be grateful for your thoughts.

Although most floatfishing books and articles stress that you should always use three float rubbers on stick floats I've long found that provided the float rubbers are in good condition then two will suffice - I can't remember the last time a float rubber actually broke, so I would just use two rubbers on the JD wire-stem floats and not bother with the eye. I do tend to use three float rubbers on crowquill Avons though the way I make them with a strong piece of quill for the stem the chance of the stem breaking (as happens with athin quill stem) is very low.
Like you I'm still delving into Stick Float Wizardry and in the fullness of time will make more stick float related videos.

@@MarkWintleFishing Thanks for the reply Mark, I'll try using the two rubbers next time I manage to get out.
Hope you have a good Christmas.

    Hello there Mark
I have recently been looking for a pair of warm boots for winter fishing. I have been recommended some called Artic by Muck boots. Just seeing you wearing welly type boots I thought I’d ask you if you have found a pair that are actually warm. Thanks for all your efforts this year they are appreciated and Merry Christmas

The boot I have are Muckboots but I don't go out in weather colder than 4C. I have original Skeetex (circa 1980) which will keep your feet warm but not brilliant for walking. I should think the Artic Muckboots will be OK.
