"better in the live versions" I vote for saying the stick & drums tones in Japan sound better than in this studio track (back 30 years ago I wouldn't care and surf in Heaven on that track, without thinking of more gorgeous tones so that it'd create new expectations)... As for getting the piece together esp Adrian Belew taking time leaving his pads before crazy feedback solo, this spoils it... Playing it live as fluently and neatly as in studio is yet to be done !
i would argue most of KC is better live. at least all the recordings ive heard from their performances over the years are better than studio versions imo.
The most underrated KC songs weren't played on live over their respective promotional tour albums.. Es: Sartori in Tanger, Sleepless and Sheltering Sky...
when i listened to this for the first time it really touched me. one of those special songs that chokes you up and swells that feeling in your heart and stomach until you wanna start belting out the notes. musicians in the purest sense.
This is such a great song. Quite joyous and upbeat, which you wouldn't normally think of from KC. Waiting Man, such a timeless, iconic and cross-cultural image.
"city of tiny lights... don't you wanna go?...." That's what I hear every time I hear belew's voice, even when it's king crimson, and not frank Zappa. That's not a bad thing. I think he really was a good choice, when fripp decided to reform and continue the mighty Crimson.

According to Dr. Fripp, Adrian has been added (never left) to King Crimson, they just aren't using him in the current format. I think Robert finally noticed how insecure Adrian was feeling about the band and acquiesced to this idea that nobody ever truly leaves KC. On any given day Adrian is more likely to be performing KC music than Robert.

@@fejestothgabor I did wonder if you'd respond along these lines. I was a stick player for 10 years but had to stop due to RSI in both arms. I was precticing for four hours per day and would only stop because my back got painful. This was the first thing I learned. It's not difficult once you get the principles involved. I've just bought a new Stick after around twent years...so I'll be tapping away getting up to speed. The first point of inaccuracy is.. when playing the same note twice in succession , do not use the same finger. Pianists also are aware of this technique.
@@MusicManxxxxx Alternating finger rehearsing is a good technique, indeed - but take a few things into account: it can also only be used up to a certain speed, because above that the sounds simply blur together. The other is that it can only be used up to a certain position, because you simply can't fit two fingers above the 10-12th fret - you can't change them quickly enough to hit the same place with them. Also, alternating finger tapping may have a more natural effect (at a low tempo), but if the touch does not reach exactly the same place, the sound will be different. A few Hz difference in pitch, and even higher you do it on the fretboard, the more disturbing this effect is. So the one-finger repetition is also valid - it depends on the situation when which is the better solution. And one more thing: if you look at it, Levin doesn't play alternate finger rehearsing in most cases either, he does it the same way I do...
At first the endless electric drums in live versions made me bored, but later I found the fun of it. This track could be 13 minutes long, but they never tried to make it "progressive" or "avant grade", they just explored the essence of music and expressed their own musical philosophy by playing it.
My idea is that what's making it avantgarde. They let it breathe and at the same time it's a polymetric exercise, it's afro-rock as hell, it has a noise-style solo, catchy vocals, tons of groove, an original form that flows with the minimal feel, pure minimal poetry lyrics, etc. "it is just gud"

How can this be 40 years old, and still sounds like something from the future. This era of King Crimson with Adrian Belew was just incredible.

Well said! So happy to hear all these songs today ❤

What a stupid thing to say.

20th century gooner
also the part where he says "I have become the King, Crimson!" it blew me away the first time I heard it
Of all King Crimson vocalists, I can safely say that Belew was one of them
What a great vocalist Belew is
Not to mention what a great addition he is as a guitarist.
From 2:15 it's a Bruford master class on how to play weird stuff that's not the obvious 2 and 4 and somehow keep the strong groove going. Love it
These 4 minutes are pure magic.

I have loved this song for about 40 years. It is very definitely in the top 5 of my favorite Crim songs; probably top 3.
Their best album from the 80's. Montreal's live version of this song is even all the more incredible.

Was king crimson big in japan or something? I see a lot of japanese comments.
Although they are not as big as the Beatles, I think there are many enthusiastic fans in Japan. They are not considered a minor band.
Just want you to know my 13 year old daughter is a fan. She'll love this one.

This album could have been named after Bill bruford because he is the king of the beat.
It's name after the beat poets actually. There are tons of references most notably Neil (Cassady) and Jack (Kerouac) and Me.
