    I have been doing this technique for years, both with mica and alcohol inks... What I have learned is that no matter what medium, white as a pigment is Always the heaviest pigment. So you have the right idea, but may I suggest not adding the alcohol to your colors mica , unless you are trying to extend your work time, and try I stead of the paste, a pearl white mich powder and adding the alcohol to that one.. but just a touch.... Drop your color pigments then white ,then color then white... The white will push down the color pigments because it is heavier ..... Repeat that process untill you are satisfied... Let it cure up a little .... Maybe an hour or so... Then come back and swirl.. I think you will find this to work better for your desired feathered look...

    I prefer mica powder over alcohol inks because you can’t really fail in making beautiful designs with mica but can fail miserably while using alcohol inks, I think inks are more challenging and you really need to know what you’re doing. I think inks provide more polish and glossy look but it’s just easier to mess up if you don’t know what you’re doing. Great video BTW! Love your designs ❤

    I just love all of your videos. I've been watching your videos since you started out. I remember how shaky your hands were, but with every video it got better and better. I love you experiments. Unfortunately, in South Africa it's difficult to get the Let's Resin resins. Julie from pouring your heart out has done the same experiments, just with pigment pastes. It took het quite a couple of times, but she mastered it. It helps us if you do these experiments because we don't need to waste a lot of time and resin trying to figure things out. It also helps if it's not always perfect because we learn from your mistakes. Keep up with your excellent work. We all love it💜

  • @fairyspunfibers9098
    @fairyspunfibers9098 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Wow, these are all very pretty, Daniel...I like them! What a brilliant idea to use mica powders! I so seldom use them, and I do have quite a few just being ignored. But, no longer. That's astonishing what a difference the C-deeper made!
    I'm really eager to see if you can do something to make alcohol inks more light-stable. What a boon to the resin world that would be! Good luck, Daniel!
    Oh, before I forget...! You'd issued a bit of a challenge way back when to see if Petri and/or cloud effects could be obtained in UV resin. Well...I've been working on that and had some success with petri using drops of transparent resin DYE and C-deeper; my first attempts with alcohol ink being a total failure/mess. 😁 So far, I've discovered the C-deeper makes an unholy mess on the backside (of course it does-ugh!) but after I cured the pieces, I just wiped the mess off, domed with more resin, and it looked pretty good considering it was my first attempt. My grandkids are the recipients of all my messes, and they are young enough to think they're all wonderful. 😅
    Will let you know if I can get better results than I have so far (but they're not too bad!). I haven't a phone or camera, but my kids do, so I'll make them indulge their mama. I'm using the same mold you're using, too, as that helps me to judge results better (I think).

    • @daniel..cooper
      @daniel..cooper  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you, yes, I have had some success with UV and Petri but it sure can be messy! 😂

    Daniel, I don’t think anyone had done a video on mica alcohol with pigment paste either. I’ve been periodically looking for one via TH-cam and hadn’t found any even looking at various times. I had thought about it after a few videos I’d been watching from Julie at pouring your heart out. She mentioned mica but I’ve never seen her do it or anyone else. Great
    video, really liked seeing someone trying to do it with mica. Another thing I’ve noticed be careful with gold, sometimes it is as heavy as white and sinking. Just something I’ve seen happen. Again great thanks for the video and until next time, be safe make great choices! ❤️❤️❤️

    Another great experiment!! Thanks Daniel 👌 ~~I’ve been making resin dye - alcohol inks with almost the same effects as regular alcohol inks. I started with an Alumilite dye kit. It’s a limited basic color kit but they can be mixed. Example: I wanted turquoise so I mixed blue & green plus white till it was the turquoise I wanted.. added 99% alcohol. I keep them in needle nose tip bottles. Any colors can be made and they are colorfast. Now I’m venturing out to other dyes like cheapo sets off of Amazon bc I wanted flashy colors like magenta & neons ..and they are working too. I have lots of mica alcohols mixed up but the micas seem to float up instead of down. Thanks for sharing 🌹. It’s all good fun to try and most turn out pretty nice no matter. Have a great day or night 😊

    Hello, new to your channel but been working with resin for years. I added alcohol to a sculpture of mine over 2yrs ago and it’s in my room (out of sunlight) and it’s still going strong. It’s the quality of the pigment, resin and out of sunlight that is key IMO. Looking forward to watching your videos. Your making me want to play with Resin again.

    Some nice results but the test pieces are the best ones. This is well known to me, everytime I do resin one or two pieces are for testing some things I did not try yet. If they dont work I will have at least learned what not to do, but sometimes I also get stunning and completly unexpected results. I tried what you show in the video some weeks ago but without any white pigment or sinker inks, just the mica and alcohol in resin. I will try to combine this with my homebrew sinker white that I accidentally created and currently experiment with. TYVM for the gread video and detailled explanations. Already looking forward to the test of the alc ink brands.😁👍

    Thanks for sharing another great experiment! Even though it wasn’t what you were hoping for, they still turned out beautiful! I’m always happy to see you’ve posted a new video. I’ve seen all of your videos but, I can’t remember if you’ve ever mixed just the C deeper instead of paste in a similar experiment? I’m interested to see your alcohol ink experiment. Even though I knew they faded in sunlight, I was still surprised at how fast it happened in Steve McDonalds recent video. I’m really curious as to why alcohol inks are prone to do that? Especially since I love working with them!😆 If you have a favorite pendant, chances are it’s going to get UV exposure.

    I love all of them!!!! For another test try acetone (nail polish remover). I’m thinking this because when I was doing my nails the other day I had some polish that was thick. I knew I couldn’t use alcohol to thin it so I tried acetone because when I use it to remove gel, when it evaporates the gel hardens back up. So maybe it will do the same thing with regular resin. I’m curious.

    I need to try this again now that I'm using different resins. You make such beautiful pieces! Makes me want to try again. 🥰
    Did you swirl the last 2 again after you added the sinker to the back?

    • @daniel..cooper
      @daniel..cooper  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks Cathii, yes, I swirled after waiting for the resin to thicken as usual, I'm also going to try this with blooms, mixing in the mica with the base white should give some nice pastel colours.

      @@daniel..cooper That's exactly what I was thinking! I've tried this technique with flowers before. I got interesting results, but not quite feathering.

      My black went rock hard; it was too far gone to save it. They are less than a year old, and I make sure my lids are on even before I stir it into the resin. Too expensive to waste!

    Holy cow, be careful doing this. I used 3 drops of 99.9% alcohol in about 20ml of alumilite clear cast with Let's Resin mica powder into a piping bag (doing something different) and my resin got SUPER hot, so hot I couldn't touch the piping bag and hardened half of the bag in less than 15 minutes (normally has a work time of about 45 minutes), even though towards the tip was water thin. I did everything else I would normally do, the alcohol is the only thing different and I never had that happen before.

    • @daniel..cooper
      @daniel..cooper  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Oh no! I haven't had that yet, maybe the piping bags were full? Resin heats fast if too deep.
