When I was a child in the 1940s, my mother would bring us children with her to Watts to shop at the open market square adjacent to the Watts Towers. We lived in South Gatte, close to Watts and would go for groceries and such to the stalls and so forth in the square that was there at the time to shop, mostly for food. (The markets in South Gate were downright vile and very unsanitary, which made my mother squeamish.) My mother befriended Mr. Rodia, who sometimes would stop at the open market and rest, by some sort of public fountain as I recall. Mother would bring Mr. Rodia interestingly couloured glass and other such things to use in the towers, as some other folks would do.

Gerald, the Watts Towers are my single favorite work of art on the North American continent, so I envy you that you had that experience! Did you actually witness the gradual rise of the towers and other structures over time? Did your mother - or do you - have any more personal recollections of Simon Rodia? Would love to hear them! Thanks for sharing this.

There is foolish art, there is nasty art, and then there is art done because "it was inside me and I had to let it out", this is what this tiny man, in his spare time, accomplished. To stand under these towers and see the dangerous heights he took them to , is to simply be in awe of, and make you want to shout a cheer for what he tried to tell us. It may be rustic, and strange, but anyone has seen these towers knows what a dedicated work of art they are.

My first exhibition was at Watts Towers along with my friend, Ray Bravo, in what used to be Rodia's house. It was badly damaged in a fire and torn down.

Very interesting! I didn't know that. Tell me more about it, when I'm in Miami!

Bill Pusztai it is an amazing place and structure. Part of the reason I posted the video is because of a local exhibition that set up a vinyl record shop in the gallery and one album cover had the towers.
VernissageTV yes, absolutely. I'll be working for Jonathan Novak again this year in Art Miami. See you soon.

Simon Rodia's Watts Towers in Los Angeles and how to preserve them

I think some sort of outer structure such as a dome or glass house structure that is designed to complement the towers and protect them from the elements would help to protect them.

I first heard about the towers in the third grade on a TV show called “Dusty’s Treehouse”. Later the next year, I also saw them in an issue of National Geographic.
I’ve always wanted to see them, but a friend of mine (a native of the area) tells me not to; she claims the neighborhood is dangerous... :/

the guy new about sacred geometry . just as the little guy who build the coral castle in a spiral lay out. learn 369 vortex math and you will see his towers. the floor geometry is depicting toroidal and ufo tech. the 369 tech is all over this place? this guy must have had a down load of some kind. or I don't know how ells to explain how he knew about this stuff when everyone ells has not a clue? just as the guy in Florida? and also at the same time??? unless at an early age he stumbled across this tech. When u learn this u will se its not all that hard to get.

Sorry but the narrator's voice is horrible. Couldn't stand it after 2 minutes.

You just have to get used to his voice. This is an authentic spectator to the creation of this project. Who did you want to tell the story??
