When I graduated from high school in the early 80's my grad present was the full set of Craftsman mechanics tools.
Metric and imperial, wrenches, sockets, deep sockets too, the full set, 1/4" drive, 3/8" drive and 1/2" drive, with all the extensions, and even the wobbly bits, full set of hex sockets too. Now 37 years or so on I still have them, and they are great tools, much better than some stupid ring with my class year and stuff on it LOL

I was a technician at Monkey Wards years ago and could only afford Craftsman, and my shop was across the street from a Sears which was convenient. It took 25 years to finally wear out my 3/8 drive 10mm.........Replaced it and that one lasted about 6 month and had to replace it again. Luckily that replacement had lasted a few years now. Much better than going to waste or some tosser who doesn't know what he's got and leaves them rusting in a shed. OR the little woman flogging them off for tuppence to some arsehole out of your control. While you watch, helpless.
He'll remember you too, and smile, every time he rounds off and smashed his knuckles with one of your tools, or get's another one of his doubtless many black nails. .

The crap tools go on deck. Of course, I also have crap tools I can't lose in a hurricane, but I did lose a vanadium chromium screwdriver my late dad had owned off the stern at haulout undoing the mast stays. I made a fishing pole at spring breakup, rigged a Dyneema line and a big magnet and got it back first strike. I did a single stroke with an SOS pad and she was good to go, but now has a hole drilled and a little lanyard.

The 10mm thing got me good, I have a 14 year old stainley set that I got for my 18th birthday and have kept every piece of it. Except the 10mm of which I have replace at least 10 times in two different sizes because mine was a 72 piece set if I remember correctly. Comedy gold

My favorite wrenches were Bon-e-con. Got some from my Dad left over from when he worked in the bomber plant in WW2. Slim, not bulky like Crapsman. My roll around and chest were stolen. Full of lots of big tools from when I worked on heavy equipment.

Yes Bonneys were the best, but can't get them anymore. The company was sold a long time ago. I have a box full of Bonneys and Bon-e cons.

I actually used the hell out of my Joker wrench back when I was running a lot of conduit. Sometimes you gotta reach a nut on the inside of the unistrut and the regular angled open end wrench can't get it from one way or the other, but the straight on option with the Joker would get it. And I used the nut holding feature fairly often too.

Often have to make "sacrifices" - grinding them to fit narrow spaces, cut notches in ring spanners to get onto things, cut spanners in half to fit into stupid places. It is good to have some rubbish tools on hand for these occasions...

Nothing like seeing your boss cry while you cut the end off a brand new 4.5" wrench.
Even better is the look on the safety guy's face while 4 guys hang on a 12' cheater stuck on the end of said wrench.

Harbour Frought seems to be edging into the big-box tool quality lately with their "professional" tools with lifetime warranty. For us home-gamers, there really isn't anything akin to the old USA-built Craftsman or Stanley....and I'm not about to fork over the dough for real professional tools. As long as my only option is import, I'll likely swallow my pride, pull out my 20% off coupon and buy from the chinesium emporium.

    • @McTroyd
      @McTroyd 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@Chris Isn't that the problem though? I don't think anyone *wants* to "fork over the dough for real professional tools." Couple this with the err toward the cheapest option, and it's a one-two punch.
I did the same thing through my collegiate years by necessity (money gets tight fast when one is living on loans). Over that time, buying from the local Wally World, I noticed I was buying the same thing again after about a year of constant use. To me, replacing things annually is a "subscription," not a purchase. Conversely, the shoes I'm wearing now cost five times as much as a Wally World equivalent, but they've last almost twice as long...
Please forgive the soapbox rant, but the bottom line is we get what we pay for. (Edited for grammar/clarity.)

I bought the HF impact tools 20+ years ago. Can't go wrong with those, especially the ones with the rounded corners where they copied the snap on design. Those are like gold. They won't round over the fastener.

I love how in the years before the interwebs my friends an I had an inside joke about 10's then when I got into the auto repair biz we'd joke around about the 10mm being missing. Now that everyone in the world can communicate freely its become an international meme.

I have had good experiences with my cheap husky brand wrenches. Though they have never been put through the ringer. I discovered Wright tools since that are an Ohio company and I love to support local. They will probably be my new go-to brand.
Also have a little Wera kit, was pricey, but the quality seems great. Only used it on light duty stuff so far, but seems promising.

Btw on the Joker wrenches, the 6 point is designed to hold a nut and feed it into a tight space, that's it. If you don't want to use the feature, flip the wrench over. Overengineeered a bit. I actually prefer those because they bite and slip very consistently, but I do agree my 198x era MIUSA Craftmans probably have a better max grip, once you get the wrench positioned correctly.
