American Tries Ubud's Best Babi Guling 🇮🇩

  • Today I give you a little tour of my villa in Ubud. A cozy little place tucked away in the middle of Ubud. The room I'm staying in is just 9 bucks, comes with a nice view looking over the pool and courtyard. After the tour we go on a little walk toward a babi guling restaurant for lunch, then I hit up a local market to see what they have and to see what I can get for 20,000 rupiah, spoiler alert, NOT MUCH! But, I was just interested in what they were selling, which because of the current dire economic situation, makes even just looking around almost impossible. I know they are suffering, but it also makes for a really unpleasant shopping experience. I hope things pick up soon so more tourists can come. Thanks for watching, see you in the next one.

In this video, I just wanted to point out that a lot of the beautiful things you see in Bali are related to Hinduism, and are unique to Bali because of that. And if you were coming to Indonesia for the first time, it would be easy to assume that all of Indonesia is like that. I'm not trying to say it's better or prettier than other places in Indonesia, hopefully, I'll get to see more of Indonesia myself in the future.

it is not mandatory to eat with hands in indonesia, we also use spoon and fork too if we don't want our hands to get dirty or just lazy to wash hands after eating. You won't be looked weirdly if you use spoon or fork (except if you eat something difficult like fish, crab, or others)

there're two kinds traditional statues that we can find in Bali, the religious statue which on every shrines/temples and folklore statues. most foreigner sometime confuse why there's scary evil looking giant statue in front of every shrines/temples (some people might think, on holy place there should be only holy spirit such angels), in Bali Hindu we know there're 2 kinds of giants, a good one and an evil one, in front of every shrines/temples is the good giant because of their strength they have been entrusted for guarding the sacred place (they took a good deeds so that they can ascend into Goddess, the circle of Samsara), there's also a Goddess in face of giant (the giant face on above of every temples entrance), that face is not a giant but Goddess of the forest or protector of the forest, in Bali forest is a sacred place, you can't do any bad or indecent/inappropriate thing in the forest, even when we try to chop trees in the forest we must perform many steps of ceremony. now there's folklore statue, usually on several intersections in Bali. the first one is at airport (the gateway), that statue is the clash between Gatot Kaca and Karna during Bharatayuddha war from Mahabrata story. On north from the airport there's Dewa Ruci statue where Bhimasena (or Bhima) perform task from Drona to find eternal water, so he stirring the ocean to find the water and awaken the dragon of the sea, this from Mahabrata story (i think only on Indonesian version). On east of Denpasar, you'll find statue of Rama with monkey army building bridge to Alengka, from Ramayana story. On Gianyar city you'll find statue about fighting between Kala Rau giant with the Goddess for eternal water with result the lost of Kala Rau head (the head remain eternal) that later eating the Moon Goddess (Dewi Ratih) and cause moon eclipse. On monkey forest (and Bedugul) you usually found the statue about the fall of Kumbakarna surrounded by monkey army because he previously beat and eat many monkeys (it's the revenge of monkey army, and for us as reminder that the monkey can be vicious, don't threat them), from Ramayana story. the placing on some intersection is to make our youngster interest on the history/story, so every time we pass the intersection our children usually ask "dad, what's statue is that?" and we as parent have duty to tell the story so that they can pass it to their children.

Okay...talking about Babi Guling...after many times coming to Bali, last time (just last week) was the first time ever I ate Babi Guling. I dont really like to eat meat so for me it tastes okay 😂😂... but I also went to Fu Shuo Noodle Club in Ubud and I love their pork’s dishes...next time you go to Ubud, maybe you could try it.
And, yup...it’s true Bali is unique, but somehow it’s similar. Every place has its own uniqueness due to local culture but if you’re traveling all around Indonesia, you’ll see the similarities too. I guess you have to see it yourself 😊

So, this is a really small (yet important) scene from the Hindu Epic - The Mahabharata. The entire story revolves around two sets of cousins going to war over the right to rule.
This statue is about the guy standing on the horses - or hovering, apparently he could fly too - destroying a good number of the enemy's army, instigating a one-on-one combat and eventually, sacrificing himself so his side (the good side) ends up winning.

Hi Nick, we love watching your videos they make us miss Bali so much.
Many years ago we were told by the Balinese that you ate food with your left hand because you wiped your backside with the right 🤣😂. Don’t know if it’s true but sounds good 👍. Keep up the interesting video Nick. From Hervey Bay Queensland

Hi Janet, what you said is true and it is the culture across all of Indonesia. The left hand is used to clean your butt after defacating so don't eat with it . Nick's vlogs are cool for sure.

Thank you Janet! I've been told to eat with the right hand and do all the 'clean' things with the right, but leave the dirty things like wiping and throwing away trash for the left... i guess i better switch hands if thats the case lol

    Great video again Nick.
I say “Singala pis” in markets when I’m hassled or they are over charging. It means “I’m broke”! Enjoy
