Aaron Phillip (born 1973) better known by his stage names, Afu-Ra & Afu is a New York-based American underground rapper. Afu, born Aaron Phillip, is a devout student of the Martial arts, as well as Chess. Afu is a member of the Gang Starr Foundation, alongside rappers like Jeru the Damaja, Big Shug and Group Home, and is most well known through his affiliation with the foundation and Jeru the Damaja.[1] His first appearance was on Jeru's classic 1994 album The Sun Rises in the East, on the song "Mental Stamina". He made another appearance on Jeru's second album Wrath of the Math, on the track "Physical Stamina", in 1996. Afu's debut single, "Whirlwind Thru Cities", was released in 1998, reaching the top 20 on Billboard's Hot Rap Singles chart. In 1999, he released his second single, "Defeat" b/w "Mortal Kombat". His anticipated debut album, Body of the Life Force, was released in October 2000. The album featured production from a number of prominent Hip Hop beatmakers, including DJ Premier, DJ Muggs, True Master and Da Beatminerz. Guests included Wu-Tang Clan's GZA and Masta Killa, M.O.P., Ky-Mani Marley and the Cocoa Brovaz. "Whirlwind Thru Cities", "Defeat" and "Mortal Kombat" were included here, as well as the singles "Equality", "Big Acts, Little Acts" and "D&D Soundclash". Afu released his second effort Life Force Radio in May 2002, featuring production from DJ Premier, Curt Cazal, True Master, Easy Mo Bee, Needlez, Domingo and Ayatollah. Guests included Hip Hop legends Guru, Big Daddy Kane, RZA as well as R&B star Teena Marie. In 2004, he released a compilation album titled Afu-Ra presents Perverted Monks. He returned with another album in 2005, State of the Arts. DJ Premier returned once again to produce the single "Sucka Free". Wu-Tang's Masta Killa appeared on the song "Livin' Like Dat", and underground favorite Royce Da 5'9" appeared on "Pusha".

Probably Hip-Hop and Rap had it's prime in mainstream for some years (first half of 90's - mtv raps and all that), some say after 96 rap started to shape into pop. Late 90's and early 2000 was all about underground, Dilated Peoples, People under the stairs, Lootpack, Quasimoto, Company Flow groups like this were representing the real culture not just fame and being a super star

    Lyrics
    [Verse 1: Afu-Ra]
Peep the finisher, blemisher, menace to sinister
It's him with the, been with the, mic's next to kin with the
    Lyrical assassinate like toxic waste
Rocks is base, matches I burn up in your face
Travel through eons, mentally to spit it viciously
Slapping up these red-eyed devils speaking fictitiously
They slipping B, symphony, mic styles they slipping me
A golden aura, it backs the voice you can't ignore the
Monumental essence which crowds wish to adore the
Shimmering stone lace like stylish, luscious, Tiffany
Sages when they meditate, prism filling my imagery
Subliminally, thoughts I set it synchronistically
The intricacy, complex levels my entity
No stopping me, I'm rocking the Hip-Hop philosophy
Drummer drum it, preserve myself to keep me omnipotent
99 styles I keep it flowing
[Hook: DJ Premier cutting & scratching]
    "Randomly flip on bystanders"
    "Blowing up the spot"
    "Randomly flip"
    "Take control"
    "Represent, represent, represent"
    [Verse 2: Afu-Ra]
Poisonous, venom yes, when I bless the mic and structure
    Supreme ultimate conductor
    Eruption type flow, lyrical lava
Torching up foes, nuff combustion when I'm crushing
Like Big Pun, who's the one who makes the kids run?
Stun like stunguns; son, I hit your Fulcrum
Seas of MCs I part, and some may call it Biblical
Steady causing damage with words and even syllables
Audio, it's too malicious, call it vicious
No time for battling, competition I'm shattering
Astro-physical, to melt mics my ritual
Something I couldn't stop, yo it's just habitual
Flow like the breeze with ease of seven seas
You're to your knees like hit by a disease
It's Afu, you know who, I'm coming faster
Pay attention 'cause it's worldwide disaster
[Hook: DJ Premier cutting & scratching]
    "Randomly flip on bystanders"
    "Blowing up the spot"
    "Randomly flip"
    "Take control"
    "Represent, represent, represent"
    "Randomly flip on bystanders"
    "Blowing up the spot"
    "Randomly flip"
    "Take control"
    "Represent, represent, represent"
    [Verse 3: Afu-Ra]
Listen up, now class was in session
Stop fessing worshiping cars, clothes and weapons
Your reign is over, like any move of a chauvinistic
    Weak-ass, character misfit
You know it wouldn't last forever with endeavors
Multiple bad moves your head, you finally severed
Decapitated by the new heads of state
    Whose lyrical ideologies uncover fallacies
And dynasties constructed by the morbid
I knew it took time but time it took to floor it
The next centennial will start with minimal
Microphone controllers trying to bless lines with imbecile
    Lyrical content for devilishment
    Body of the Life-Force
[Hook: DJ Premier cutting & scratching]
    "Randomly flip on bystanders"
    "Blowing up the spot"
    "Randomly flip"
    "Take control"
    "Represent, represent, represent"
    "Randomly flip on bystanders"
    "Blowing up the spot"
    "Randomly flip"
    "Take control"
    "Represent, represent, represent"

I was so happy when I found this album recently in the small local record store that's still trying to live. Most comments are praising DJ Premier (and for a good reason, not my favorite though), but I listen to this for Afu-Ra; he has his own catchy flow that really ties into the beat. Throughout the album you can clearly hear they did good teamwork (or one of them followed the other's work closely).

Even though I didn’t listen to this song when it came out in 2000, it still has some nostalgic feeling to it. Idk why, but late 90’s/early 2000’s songs always sound the most nostalgic to me, probably because I was between the ages of 5 and 10. But yeah, the song sounds like a bridge from the 90’s to the 2000’s, and seeing New York subways in the video in 2000, no social media, smartphones and all the bs we have now. Simpler times…until a year later…

Hip hop heads identify a Premier joint within the first 10 seconds or so, such a classic, dope sound. Afu did this one justice fa sho. Been putting together a playlist with gems I've found over the years, had to drop this gem on there.
