Was on my school's electric go-kart team in high school. Back in the days of lead-acid batteries. I was the welder, and switched our car from steel tube framing to aluminum tube because I could actually weld aluminum competently. I even got to drive the car once as our regular driver got sick one race, and I was the only other team member with a driver's license. Unfortunately, the car was custom built for the 5'4" driver, and I was 6'0". I had to hunker down in the seat with terrible posture to prevent the top of my helmet from sticking out the top of the vehicle. We never won a race, but we were the only team that _finished_ every race! My race was by the skin of our battery, as I weighed more than the usual driver, I crossed the finish line doing about 5 MPH, about 5 minutes after the second-to-last car finished. (The course only took about 2 minutes per lap at normal speed 30-40 MPH.) (And now Nikki knows where my penchant for driving EVs to the very bottom of the battery comes from.)
I was incredibly excited to see you were interviewing a college Formula Electric team. I had the important, amazing experience of being on a college SAE Baja team. We learned so much. Congratulations to their whole team and best wishes for happy lives and careers.
HI Nikki I was last weekend at a Electric car show in Quebec city Canada and there was a team from a other University and they had a electric race car this one was 4 motor with planetary gear they made their own motor , planetary gear , inverter , battery pack and BMS they mentioned and showed me one of the competing car's battery pack went into thermal runaway but the battery was not installed in the car anyway I was so impressed I talked to a guy that was a mechanical engineer and the other guy was a electrical engineer.
Have you guys checked out Greenpower? UK based. Was just racing with them yesterday! Very very cold, very very wet, but we’re off to the final in Goodwood!
