    I used to belong to ARRL before I retired, but it's hard to keep membership on a fixed income. They would have more members if they lowered the membership price for seniors.

    I've struggled with this topic for a long time. I've been a ham for 35 years. At different points I have been a participating member of the ARRL only later to run across disturbing behavior in the organization and it's leadership that made me walk away. From the millions of dollars spent on BPL (which proved to be a chihuahua with a whole lot more bark than bite), to the conduct of so-called "professional communicators" in disaster response, to the recent board spat resulting in censure there is a cycle of tepid leadership and arrogance that shows up in the ARRL time and again. Is the league really focusing on the right priorities to ensure a vibrant amateur radio future? That's where I struggle. It's great that ARRL publishes so many resources. I'm glad the league produces awesome teacher resources. I'm pleased that the ARRL advocates on behalf of amateurs in the regulatory space. But all of this, to what effect? Amateur radio seems to be anchored to strong confirmation bias - we believe that because the ARRL is doing something, that it must be good for amateur radio. Where is the data that shows this? Activity is not progress. That's where the ARRL and I disagree. I would really like the leadership of the league to show some humility, own their gaffes, and collaboratively chart a path for a sustainable future for amateur radio. Let creative destruction rain down on the more than 100-year-old league to break apart its old bad habits and empower transformation of the hobby into something more than counts of the number of nets that have been completed for the month.

    I don't know if you will even get this message... I just joined the ARRL March 31, '22. You mention in this video that you can get email forwarding for your callsign. I went to the ARRL website and when I found it... it is very clear that it is for "club use". The form to fill out even asks for "club name" and the name of the club officer. Yet I have always heard that individuals could use it. Is this a recent change? Thanks Dave! Love your videos!

    The ARRL has spent years developing and maintaining relationships with the FCC to help provide influence for ham radio operators. They are the only organization to advocate for ham radio at the national and are involved in the IARU to advocate internationally. I like to call them our professional association for ham radio operators. They do everything for us that my professional association does and the cost is a lot less than that organization is. AB7ZQ

    As a relatively new ham. I wish they had a slightly discounted option if you opt out of receiving hard copies of QST. I would be fine paying $35 or maybe a little more a year and only having access to the online archive / copies. I just don't have the space to have magazines pile up and don't want to have the trees wasted when I only read a small portion of each issue. But I also don't want to feel like I'm paying for something that I'm not getting by opting out and still paying the full price.

  • @Thomas-rl8kw

    Qst is more catalog than magazine. I am a member, but I'd like to see a callsign database. QRZ shouldn't be the authoritative callsign lookup service. I'm glad they finally moved off of Windows 98 in regards to the website.

    One reason why the physical circulation of QST may not correspond with the actual membership numbers is that a lot of US members, like myself, choose only to get the digital edition of QST and not receive the mailed hard copy. Also international and Canadian members may chose only to get the digital edition and get a discount on their membership compared to their full corresponding membership fee with the mailed QST. Finally, those members under the family and blind membership options do not get a mailed hardcopy of QST. IMHO it might be a good idea for the ARRL to give some discount for the standard US members who chose only the digital edition since the cost of mailing and printing the hard copy is saved. This might also help increase US membership. Great video as always. 73 WA2TAW

      @nateo200 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think it would be great if ARES members would be exempt from some of the insane HOA restrictions due to the fact that they volunteer their time to help during disasters while the HOAs are worried about how houses "look".

    • @todderbert
      @todderbert 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm thinking there could be a compromise. A single HAM station for every block, or something along those lines. Having RACES or ARES membership would give your station priority. I imagine if you live in a condo/town home environment you would have to use your balcony. That is fine by me...I would put up a nice tall vertical.

    Thanks for reminding me, I just signed up. I see what you mean in the comments about some members being critical of the ARRL and what it stands for. My early assessment is that there will always be differences of opinion when member benefits are at stake, especially when they clash with what some perceive as unwanted influence from corporations vying for more profits or government officials vying for more power, but overall I believe the ARRL is there to act as our advocate and keep the hobby open for all to enjoy. It can't be all things to all hams but I don't think any of us are expecting it to be.

    Great video as always Dave. I joined as an ARRL Life member when I decided to get into amateur radio several years ago. If for nothing else I thought I want someone in the amateur's corner with the FCC and Government. My daughter lives not far from ARRL HQ, so I stopped by once to take the tour. Welcoming folks and very informative. However, the focus on the card mailing service and the publication/selling of books hits me as an area that may fade away in years to come. I think the ARRL hit on a good thing with their 2018 International Grid chase. Just as the FT8 popularity hit, it put them in the center of a new area of amateur radio. When I inquired about the plans for the 2019 Grid chase, feedback received was not in 2019, and will think about some other kind of event for 2020. That kind of pace, and the focus on selling books should be a concern for those interested in ARRL's vitality in the future.

    Dave, I am currently studying for my Technician and General Licenses. That being said, I can understand why joining the ARRL can be beneficial, especially to someone like myself who is just getting started in the field. However, I would like to share with you my experiences of two other organizations I joined, who were tasked with conforming to Government regulations. No matter how much they represented the members, in the end, the Government and its regulations were the final word. When you are a paying member, this stings a bit, especially when the organization either folds to the pressure of change or is conveniently ignored by the regulating entity, otherwise known as the Government. Such shining examples I can personally give you was when I was in to high powered rocketry 25 years ago. The BATF became involved, stating that our high powered model rockets could be potential used as missies. So, I left that hobby. Later, and more recently, I got into RC aircraft. But as it is well known, the FAA got involved, and despite a temporary hold on registrations, the need to register your quadcopter was finally made mandatory. Yet, another hobby I left behind. The bottom line is this: Criminals do not follow regulations. Those of us who comply are only hurt by regulation, and threatened with fines and jail time. The ARRL may be a good organization to join for the Amateur Radio Operator, but if they follow suit of any other organization, their opinion and representation of the members won’t really matter in the end.

    • @davecasler
      @davecasler  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Federal regulations have the force of law. The ARRL and other membership organizations are lobbying organizations, not regulatory agencies. I also fly a drone and used to launch Estes rockets, but the rockets were a long time ago.

    Enjoyed your video as usual. I am not an ARRL member at this time. I have been a few times over the years, but the QST fails to keep my interest, and I've rarely been able to find what info I'm searching for on there website. The pre-1990's offered more articles of interest, and less about Contesting. They had a great insert for a while called "The New Ham Companion". I was a member early on then stopped. I was off the air for 3 years, returned and qualified for extra class. Overall I believe their publications are some of the best resources I have seen from Novice to Extra. Wonderful designs for DIY so they don’t just support business. When viewed through the lens of time I believe you’ll see that they have done numerous things that help Ham Radio and kept our privileges. Does anyone remember that it wasn’t that long ago that people were wanting to use power-lines as another broadband internet source with frequencies that would effectively destroy some of the bands. Only the ARRL stood up to protect our band privileges. Those who watched the Kavanaugh hearings saw our newest Supreme Court Judge Testify that he found for the ARRL. Sometimes people’s memories are restricted to the past couple years rather than “The Big Picture”. When someone else steps up that has that kind of impact I’ll then compare, until then I’ll stand solid. You could spend that money to join them or on another piece of equipment to find a couple years later you can’t use the equipment because there was no one there to stand up for you.

    I been a member since before I was even licensed in Ham radio and supported alot of there programs, only 2 items ever got me disappointed in ARRL but kept my membership. The first was when they eliminated the Handbook CD when it was sold separate. But my last purcase was in the 2013 and that was with the CD inside, carrying there book in my suitcase was hard when I was going through the airport. Also noticed they supported the elimination of the code which I felt at the time the 5 wpm should have stayed. Even though they had there views I had mine and stayed with the league. Just like my last job working for the USN as a civilian you have your views and they have there's but you stay with it until retired.

  • @lyfandeth
    @lyfandeth 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Dave- Don't forget, newly licensed hams get a discount on ARRL membership! And the ARRL gives out free handouts to volunteer examiners, specifically to give out to folks who have just taken the test, to encourage joining and getting the discount.
    Many folks disagree with ARRL actions or policies, but the choices are to support them, or to work from within for change, or, sure, just try to build an alternative from the ground up. Most effective to join and then WORK to change it if you don't like it.
    Now, if the ARRL would only get with the times...offer membership without the printed magazine (right now only available to the blind), learn to sell ebooks at least for the same price that online resellers sell them for....concentrate more on member service than raising operating funds, necessary as they may be.

    The ARRL is covering up a director who was recently criminally convicted for harassment of a minor at a hamfest in Colorado. They have never exposed the director. I wish they would step up and do the right thing. The ARRL today is not the ARRL we all grew up with and had a lifetime relationship. The death of Bill Moore, the absent of leadership when Kay Craigie left, etc.....has changed the face of the ARRL. The current ARRL board has had several opportunities to put a child protection plan in place. The refuse to do so- Everything Dave states is true. But it is a dismal organization today- Under the leadership of K5UR, they have lost their moral compass.

    Nicely done summary. I disagree with some of your points as I think the ARRL has lost it's way of late. I challenge the ARRL to state what are their objectives for the next year, 2 years, etc., and how will they MEASURE success. At minimum, the ARRL has a communication problem; ironic given their publishing strength and Amateur Radio is about communication, with regards to just what the hell they stand for, what they are doing, and what is their value add to the hobby. I do not disagree with any of the info in your video, It is spot on. You always put out high quality and accurate information.
    It would be nice if you would give information on those of us who do not rely on the ARRL, because in my opinion they are tied to the Government. What happens in an emergency? ARES and RACES only acknowledge and handle traffic during an emergency for Federal Government agencies such as DHS or Homeland Security. What about passing traffic to local officials, churches or other local relief entities? Red Cross is tied to the Government the same as the League.
    W5YI is our preferred licensing option here in my part of SW Montana. We also utilize the Radio Relay International traffic system for passing traffic on the 80m nightly Montana traffic net.
    For your thoughtful consideration.

      What would "caring about the average ham" look like? I've gotten this feedback from several, but I'm having trouble envisioning what more they can do. The ideal pattern is that you are a member of an ARRL-affiliated club, and you and your fellow club members work at the local level, and the League works at the national level.

    We need a NRL National Radio League

      Critics have tried to create alternate leagues over the years, but the efforts go nowhere. The ARRL is what we have.

    I was an ARRL Diamond Club Member until recently. I might consider joining again if they can get their collective heads out of their asses and join the rest of us in 2018 and beyond. The in fighting and politics need to stop. Bring some fresh blood into the leadership ranks, perhaps? As it stands all I see when I look at the ARRL is old men flailing around, grasping for legitimacy.

      I tried but I lost the election by 180 votes so I won't be joining the old men on the board this time around. I am a Diamond Club member and plan on retaining it.

    Any Ham who is active on the air and active in radio clubs, without question, ought to be a member of the ARRL..!!

    I am not a member. I wonder why there are no direct benefits from the club to members...especially new members the club is trying to keep. How about using modern networking and CAT to allow ARRL / Advertiser supplied transceivers to use in their respective districts. This would give prospective users a chance to try out things they may buy in the future.
    They already have secure sign in to verify users. They just need a calendar app to hold reservations by call sign and some monitoring to make sure there are no hogs preventing other users trying out new equipment. Rotate the equipment quarterly and everyone can get a chance to use new equipment. House the equipment in local districts at volunteers / caretakers location .

    First of all I have watched your videos for some time and your contribution to HAM radio and operators is second to none and I have learned so much from you. Thank you for that. Too bad the ARRL has not modernized their message and education as you and others have. My renewal is sitting on my kitchen counter. I am struggling to find a reason to renew. ARRL is so costly and the content is not for, dare I say, the average General License and beginner. I get your points but now on fixed income and so many other ways to get excellent HAM related information, such as yourself, I would rather donate to contributors like yourself. Lastly, the only reason I can see now to contribute to ARRL is their lobbying with the FCC. But I see they have little influence with the FCC and have done little to sway the FCC to HAM's benefit. Keep up the excellent work!

      It's a personal decision, of course. I am also a member of IEEE, the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers, my professional association. I'm a life member now that I'm retired, but during my career, my dues could hit $250/year depending on what features I subscribed to. Spend some quality time with their website to see all the things available. I think then you'll put that renewal in the mail.

    ARRL doesn't represent hams anymore if they ever did. Their "customers" are not us, but the big radio manufacturers in the industry. That is who they represent. We are the merely product that is sold. The ARRL props up the ham community and tries to keep it stocked with fresh bodies, insofar in that it is a niche market for these appliance gear makers.
    It surely took no "stand" against the recent 'baofeng ban' advisory. (Aside from one missive that was never followed up upon,) Now they are effectively supporting this illegal ban, which just so happens to benefit the same big toy radio folks who buy full page ads in their magazine, by making it "illegal" to use the competition's product on amateur bands. Corruption.
    I'll change my opinion when they sue the FCC for this illegal ban, and demonstrate that they are dedicated to representing amateur operators, not representing corporate gear makers/sellers.

      In the US most organizations do not start negotiations by filing a law suit. The ARRL has informed the FCC of it's position and is in negotiations.

      I would rather have them test the different radios/equipment and give us an honest read on their performance before I go out and lay down my money for one. My HF rig cost over $6,000 new, I got it used at $3,500 and even at that it is still a lot of money. I can't see spending anymore money on an HF rig now. My FTDX 5000MP is an outstanding rig. If you read the QST magazine you would see there are some good articles and things to build if you choose to. I became a life member in the late 90's so I am ahead of the game now with just the 228+ magazines I have already got. The value of a membership in anything group or organization relies on your purpose, involvement and personal gain you wish to obtain. The membership is just the start, if you want more get involved, become a leader not a follower that complains.

    Some techs should never be on HF. Im not an old fud, I'm a newer ham, but I hear many techs on 2 meters that have a hard time with repeater offsets, phonetics, simple things they should know. Unfortunately them studying the test gave them absolutely no education. If they can't even run vhf they should not be on HF. The general test at least touches a little more of the important things. Make them at least put in the time to get general to get on HF.

    • @davecasler
      @davecasler  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, I was once a Novice. Novices were well known for their stupid mistakes, which is why they were kept to pretty narrow bands. I didn't have an elmer either once I graduated from BYU. New folks to any social group always make mistakes. The new hams need perseverance and the old hams need patience.

      @@davecasler I would just like them to put in some time for education before they are let loose on hf. I did tech and general at the same test session, yet I sat on the sides and listened, learned before I spoke a word. I had listened to nets every night on 2 meters to understand operation. I don't hear many hams that don't want to help teach entry level people. I do hear a few people that are unwilling or unable to learn. I struggle to understand alot of the technical electronic workings. I struggle with some of the calculations formulas ect. I think that part is my weakest area, and I don't think I can expand on those areas. I'm no engineer for sure.

    ARRL Membership is way over priced for what they offer. Should you join? NO. Absolutely No. You keep saying the Magazine is worth the price of Membership. Well its not. Old legacy Print is on its way out. Lower the price of Membership and maybe more Hams would join. CQ magazine is a much better deal at almost half the price and a better magazine. I Recommend that you listen to Jim W6LG here on TH-cam to see the problems ARRL is having and the New CEO. Jim's W6LG Show is entitled: Ham Radio Basics--Is The New ARRL CEO, Howard Michel WB2ITX, An Active Ham Radio Operator? Howard Michel is the Third CEO this year !
