It's beautiful here, but VANLIFE in CORNWALL is getting expensive.

  • So Cornwall is a beautiful part of the country. Steep winding roads, narrow lanes enclosed by tall verges and...Pay & Display car parks everywhere. We absolutely love it here, however, everywhere we seem to want to stop and visit...you have to pay for it, and being in a van, the prices are high here. There are plenty of lay-bys on the side of the road, but this is not where we want to park up. We search for an alternative place to visit as Port Isaac is very busy, so we decide to visit a little castle and just relax before heading back to this famous Port.
    More to come next week as we continue to explore more of the Port and head further down the coast.

    Part 7. Like the title, Cornwall is beautiful and we're glad that we decided to visit out of holiday/summer season, we can only imagine how difficult touring around this area would be in the summer. This series was filmed over autumn, October and November. It's a busy place and parking isn't cheap even as winter approaches. If you've followed us for any length of time, you will know that we don't mind paying our way as we make our way around places, however, we do get disappointed when we are charged fixed prices for parking because we're in a van.
    Thanks for watching folks and for your support. We thank everyone who supports the channel, who encourages our photography, but most of all, who just like joining us on the road!

    Great video again both. Spot on about Cornwall sadly. The coastline all around is stunning but sadly not van friendly in the slightest. We found the locals to be very accommodating while we were there but unfortunately the councils seem to be doing everything they can to dissaude vans from visiting. Shame. Safe travels guys.

      @adventurevanfreddie  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yep, totally agree with you sadly. Nearly every car park we visited had a 'one off' payment fee for vans and motorhomes with no option to pay by the hour, very disappointing. We gave it a go, out of season, however, we're in no rush to go back, beautiful, but not suited for touring and discovering in our opinion. Many thanks for watching and for taking the time to leave the comment. Best wishes and take care, Tony and Claire.

    My grandparents lived in Cornwall and it’s where my mum grew up in the 1950’s. I lived there in the 90’s and early 00’s and the influx of tourists and dead holiday homes gradually wore me out. I worked for the National Trust in the very early 90’s on that stretch of the coast. So many happy childhood memories but the place just annoys me now as so many people have moved there and expect the tourists to make them a living by charging silly prices. Such a shame as it was so beautiful and had the right number of people in the 70’s and 80’s.

    • @adventurevanfreddie
      @adventurevanfreddie  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi there Simon, many thanks for watching and for taking the time to leave the comment. Wow, you've definitely seen the places change and dare we say, 'not for the best'. Our small island is getting rather busy, especially in the tourist locations. We completely agree with you, as a 'tourist' we don't mind paying our way as long as it is reasonable and fair, however, almost everywhere we went in search of beautiful natural landscapes, we ended up paying an 'arm and a leg" to park because we were in a van.
      It's still a spectacular part of the UK and we glad we managed to get photos, but even in autumn, it was still busy.
      Again, many thanks for watching. Take care and all the best, Tony and Claire.

    Tiny fishing ports, small towns with narrow streets and windy hedge lined country lanes are incompaible with campervans and motorhomes! Most of these places were built originally for horse and cart and pedestrian traffic, The situation is exacerbated when hordes of holiday makers descend en mass on these already cramped places. We love travelling around in our van, especially into rural and coastal areas, but we only do so out of season in order to avoid most of the problems you have been experiencing. Thousands of motorhomes and campervans invading Cornwall (or similar tourist hotspots) at the same time is never going to end well!

    • @adventurevanfreddie
      @adventurevanfreddie  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi there Liam. Indeed, very true. For the reasons you mention, we visited October/November hoping to avoid and not become part of the hordes of visitors. We can only imagine what it would be like over the summer, and I (Tony) have been caught up in hellish traffic many times trying to make my way along the A30 and/or A390 'back in the day' when I worked in Cornwall. When we visited we didn't see many campervans or motorhomes, it was mainly cars; it's a very popular place as you say and beautiful nonetheless.

    If you like the sea shanty music, there is the international sea shanty festival in Falmouth in June. We have booked a campsite nearby. The fishermen friends normally perform at it. We do a lot of touring in Cornwall. Trevose head is one of the places we visit. We were there in January, and people had seen porpoises, and dolphins. Unfortunately we were a day late.

    Having lived in Mevagissey for a number of years, my advice to you would be to go out of season. It is a fantastic place where the locals get their villages back with all the visitors leaving. Cornwall has become very expensive to park up and very restrictive. St Ives is really bad to get into in the summer, I used to hate going anywhere near there in the summer. Also join the national trust as they own most of the coastal car parks.

      Hi there Barry, many thanks for watching and for taking the time to leave the comment. Yep, I (Tony) worked in Cornwall for a few years and remember very well the traffic chaos caused by the summer visitors. We visited October/November so the traffic on the road was very light; it was the car parks where we struggled lol. Indeed, Cornwall is a beautiful part of the UK with outstanding scenery and quaint villages. We couldn't get to Mevagissey unfortunately, we wanted to visit as both our parents highly recommended it. Also.....we don't mind paying, and quite often even higher than we'd like for places we really want to visit/ stay at but it is a shame that councils etc feel the need to discriminate with those charges for people they think may cause litter problems etc. From what we notice revenue gained through parking charges seems rarely spent on "litter picking" anyway. 🙂👍

    • @adventurevanfreddie
      @adventurevanfreddie  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Agreed Colin, we actually feel that campervan/motorhome owners tend to be a lot more thoughtful and respectful of the environment. We've met a load of people 'on the road' who like us, will pick up litter they find in some of these locations. Like I mentioned in another comment we received, it's far easier for camper/motorhome owners to put litter into the bins we carry. Yep, discrimination. In tomorrow's video you will see us parked up away from the main car park because the council has put a height barrier in the way! All we wanted to do was to get up early in the morning and take pictures...shame really. Thanks again buddy and all the best. 👍💙❤️🚐

      Hey up Robert. Yes, the roads are narrow and there are very few passing places, we can only imagine what it must be like in holiday season. We had no problems with the roads or traffic, just parking lol. Haha, indeed, 10 bears!! Hope you are both well and many thanks for watching another one! Take care and all the best as always. We spent many years holidaying in our caravan in Cornwall. Last summer we accompanied our daughter and her husband in Jubilee week - in their tent while her husband walked 100 miles of the coast path which he is doing every year. At nearly 80 we won’t go tent camping again ! We camped at Sennen, fantastic weather (morning and evening photography) lovely site, views, facilities etc but we decided after falling off the inflatable bed too many times most nights camping is not for us now. The biggest let down of the week was the 4 hours it took us to get out of Cornwall to come home to Suffolk. It took us 13 hours to do a journey which would usually be about 7-8 hours. Pity our pensions won’t stretch to a camper van.

      Hi there Brenda, many thanks for watching and for taking the time to leave the comment. Wow, 100 miles of the coastal path sounds amazing 👍. Haha, as for the inflatable bed, we've been there many times also...go to sleep on a bed, wake up on the ground lol. We still go camping (we don't film it) and always dread the inflatable bed saga, however, it's great laying there in the dead of the night, waiting to hear the sound of a random air pump going off lol. Ahh, we stocked up with food in Sennen and had a beer in the pub there, lovely little place and not too far from Land's End.
      Yes, the traffic can be really bad in Cornwall, I (Tony) worked near Newquay and remember the horrendous traffic over the summer periods. Lovely when you're here though. Yep, vans are very expensive, too expensive for us to buy and it's the reason why we built Freddie.
      Many thanks again for watching and leaving the message, we enjoyed reading your comments on the whole camping experience.
      All the very best, Tony and Claire. 👍💙❤️🚐

    Hi Tony/Claire, shame about the parking,certainly not easy with a camper van, I’ve struggled many a time with our old van to find parking. I was always penny pinching and would park on the outskirts and walk in, saved arguments in car parks!! Anyway when you coming to Wales, still great scenery but quieter, we now live here so are quite spoilt😊 Take care both and safe travels, Nick and Claire

      Ahhh, beautiful Wales....yes, we absolutely need to go back to Wales and explore more. Lovely country with beautiful landscapes; well done! 👍.

    Hi Tony and Claire, car parking is not great in Cornwall. I’ve wild camped on many a beach, both on the north and south coast. It’s only been recently, that I’ve driven to many of the coastal towns/ports, as I’ve paddled the whole of Cornwall from Bude to Plymouth. I love your TH-cam video’s, brings back those great memories. G & Y

      Hi Richard, many thanks for watching and for taking the time to leave the comment. Indeed, having worked in Cornwall a number of years ago, I (Tony) remember too well the chaos around summer time. We were lucky with the traffic, very few people on the road and why we left visiting Cornwall until the autumn. Busy car parks though!
      We left in November and it was still hard to get parked lol!

    We live in Cornwall and absolutely love it here. What strikes me most is as you leave Cornwall and head further north the amount of litter just gets exponentially worse. So they may charge here but at least the environment is kept pristine. My advise would be to get a national trust yearly subscription. We had both but never subscribed to British heritage again. Cornwall is definitely more biased to national trust. Not sure about the stay overs though. Anyway. Thanks for your vlogs. Always love them and thanks for all your efforts 😊

    8:16 You are in the National Trust car park (at the Lighthouse). Why not join the NT and you can park there and masses of places along the coast path in NT trust car parks without paying more? Just down from you is the Boobies NT car park (not open yet). Same with the Castle, you were near the Lundy Bay NT car park.

      Hi Jeremy, thanks for watching and for taking the time to leave the comment. Time to reconsider.

    Completely understand your rant about the car parks but it seems to be a part of life nowadays. In our younger days my late wife and i used to tow the caravan down to Devon and Cornwall, as you said much easier as we had the car to tour out daily. Although I must say less traffic those days . After losing my wife I changed to a camper van , tried it for a few years but found it very difficult finding parking and also being older and solo. Have given it up now so very much enjoy coming along with you both in your videos. So glad you managed to get back to Port Isaac , lovely village, more so out of season . Thank you for letting me ramble . Take care both 🚐👍

      So sorry for your sad loss and a real shame that the whole 'campervan thing' didn't work out for you. If you ever change your mind or should the opportunity arise, drop us a line, we would gladly meet up with you.

      @@adventurevanfreddie unfortunately some of the resistance to wild stopovers is due to selfish people coming in £50 caravans, and camping wild for weeks on end, the same as parts of Scotland😡 hence the restrictions. We’ve been motorhoming now for over fifty years and have noticed a decline in respect for local inhabitants, partly due to the ‘Bucket list’ syndrome, Where some will enjoy all the free bits in order cross it off and move on to the next phase. 🙄🙄

      @@curlyboyHymerB584 @curlyboy15 indeed, there are certainly selfish people our there spoiling it for genuine folks who want to explore and experience new places...and take a landscape picture or two👍. Yes, a lot more restrictions are being put in place in some areas, whereas other places are embracing the touring vanners. The UK should adopt the French system. Yep, the 'Park up move on' is not good, but we do the same with our photography and see far too much litter and waste. Being a Cornishman, you have no idea of real 'grip me ship' issues, relating to Cornwall. All tourists cause issues in Cornwall, whatever style of holiday they arrive in, or arrive to do. Cornwall has a small population, so why should their Council's taxes pay to clean-up Cornwall from the millions of Tourists. Rightly, the only way to be fair, is ALL pay for parking so there is money to pay people to clear-up. It's not silly, it is life, nothing is ever for free, even though many people believe it should be, even entitled van-life types that definitely want everything on the cheap. Majority of people get it, they happily accept paying, they happily enjoy visiting Cornwall and clean-up after themselves and they accept, to enable all to enjoy the beauty of Cornwall, they book and stay at the 100's of designated sites to stay over-night during the summer season. If you want a free holiday to visit Cornwall, visit in the winter, when Cornwall is at its most beautiful, especially if you can't afford a park camp site or car park. It would be like going to Spain on holiday, paying for a 'hotel only' and then complain why you don't get all inclusive free food and drink. Let's keep it real, a holiday is a luxury and definitely a 1st world issue for the wealthy types.

    • @adventurevanfreddie
      @adventurevanfreddie  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hi, thanks for watching and for leaving the comment. In most, we totally agree with you and always pay our way, albeit, parking, shopping, tourism etc; our gripe is with the difference in parking tariffs, why as a van owner do we not even get the option to pay by the hour like a car owner??? We can understand the size implications a van brings, (charge a little more) but fixed prices are not fair. As for the litter in car parks, most motorhome/campervan owners are not usually the ones to leave rubbish, it's far more easier to put our rubbish in the bins we carry. We're not going to get into argument on here, however, everyone has the right to visit places. As you suggest, we always avoid the busy times (we visited late autumn), however, as photographers, we cannot always park up on a campsite due to the very early times that we are at locations, we've tried many times; but where we can and its convenient, we do use campsites. We spent over 2 months visiting and certainly contributed to the cornish economy and the 5 campsites we stayed at. Yes, it was our first time photographing and touring Cornwall and we could plainly see how it is 'geared' toward tourism and having lived and worked there, we know and understand how busy it gets. So in all, we don't 'all' want something for free, however, reasonable and fair would be good. Yes, Cornwall is an absolutely beautiful place and the landscapes are epic. We really enjoyed the photography and the scenery, Cornwall's a very special place and we do understand your concerns.
      Thanks, Tony and Claire.

    Hi Tony and Claire. Great video as usual, and a bit of an eye opener for us regarding overnighting availability. This could sadly change our minds about staying in the area and spending money in the communities. The parking as you've said also seems a little unfair, and I think you also said cars had taken spaces for campervans. If it had been campervans in car only spaces I'm pretty sure the warden would soon have been around knocking on doors. Anyway keep up the good work with the videos and we look forward to the next one. 👩‍🦲👩‍🦳🐕🐕🐕🚐 🙂👍

      Hi there Colin, many thanks for watching and for taking the time to leave the comment. Yes, parking wasn't great for us, however, we're sure that there are places. Our problem as usual is, being close to photographic locations of which are normally 'tourist magnets'. Cornwall is beautiful and is definitely worth a visit.
      Indeed, as for normal parking, a few places we visited had fixed tariffs for vans....a little unfair, with no option to pay by the hour etc. However, don't let this spoil it for you, there are plenty of places we didn't see.
