- Another week of timber framing. we have now done the three wall frames, both gable end cross frames and two middles frames. I have also taken delivery of pegs but due to them not being up to scratch I have had to make a tool to make them useable in the frame.
we have now run out of timber. ordered a 30ton load on the 13th of march but there has been delays in getting it so we now have to stop work. I am hoping to get it next week. I only need three days to finish all the timber we need. Then we can get back to the barn and get the framing finished.

I follow your videos since you threw some tires into the mud for the round home and you never stopped to impress me. This barn is truly a big project and you will complete it just as sovereign. The peg thing is a test to your resilience I guess. Thanks for keeping up and good luck with whatever

Kris, when we in Western Australia think of a transportable building it is usually one of those tin framed fibro walled constructions brought in on one or two semi trailers and either dumped on a concrete slab or put on stumps,
Or a suitable older house that has been cut in half or more and transported to your property
But watching your transportable barn beiňg crafted by Craftsman
Working together as a team is glorious to see, the huge amount of work in sawing up the logs as you did and other prep work while doing daily chores on your property, then assisting the guys in carpentry, your should be extremely proud of your accomplishment to date.
Also the framers have shown the standard of work they produce, OB CAMERA, that alone speaks volumes for there reputation,
The peg maker hmm I wonder if that precious little 🦄 would do the same thing and let his workmanship show to the world at large.?

I am 63 my health won't let me build but when I was able I had my 1/2 acre block under Permaculture, with chooks, bantams, geese, duck's, rabbits pigeons, Guinea pigs, silver perch (fish in my home built spa) and veggies of many types, fruit trees, most has fallen by the wayside now been tolerating recurring cancer since 2007 and radiotherapy it takes it out of you big time, I am getting the urge to get back into veggies again and am going to set up a fairly big raised garden bed in the next month or 2 (just on winter here we don't get snow) but this is about Kris (and Dot) he never fails to try to do his absolute best and that to me is so inspiring, and to see a project develop I think I am almost excited for him more than he is,
Let's hope we can watch his creativeness continue to develop for years to come.

Worst part of it is the time he has to spend to fix it, which is 1-2 days (including "complaining" about the quality). That time could have been spent better.
What amazes me about you is when something goes wrong you make your own. No one can count on others to do the right thing and do it correctly. So impressed with your abilities.
The man that sold you them pegs should have payed you triple; once for delivering garbage, twice for your time, and thrice for sharing your ingenuity with him and the world.

The mind-boggling thing* is they obviously had to put in the work to make them, so why not also put in some effort to make them properly? Costs next to nothing extra to make such a simple item better.

If it was a company that’s trying to grow, it’s possible the samples were done by the owner, and the shipped pegs done by apprentices, without proper oversight or review by the owner. I’ve been that owner before and learned a valuable lesson from it…hopefully they do too. When your reputation is on the line you make damn sure what’s being done by others meets your standards. It’s hard to un-pay someone for a poor job already completed…so you pay for it in money and reputation. 😬

Only made that mistake once, it still haunts me 30years later.
Finding a floor manager/foreman/chargehand/chief whatever that really cares is a wonderful thing.
If you’re trying to grow a business and you’re lucky enough to find the right one, cherish and reward them as family or better because they’re worth their weight, possibly more.
It goes to show just how vigilant you must be when doing any project of importance, and quality. One foul up can put it all back with huge consequences to the job at hand. Those pegs seemed as if a kindergarten had, had the contract to make them. It was decent of you to not name and shame them, but that's not you Kris. The making of the tool to help correct them was of top class ingenuity and excellence. You Kris, are a man of many hidden talents and mentality of being a great thinker of resolving problems. Brilliant, absolutely brilliant. Top job. Can't wait for the build. 🖖👍
I'm so hooked on this build I had withdrawal symptoms last week when nothing came out. Thx for including the challenges cos nothing this big ever goes without moments of WT#! Hope the raw timber arrives soon and at the quality the barn deserves. Slow & Steady ... 😉
Love the way you push on through when problems hit, you find the solution! We have had to do the same many times with parts or tools we have paid good money for, my son seems to be always correcting or redesigning the solution on his lathe etc. One example, he had rebuilt an engine for his classic mini, weeks of work and months of planning, fitted it in and ran it, then one of the bushings inside the gear which floats on the end of the crankshaft gave up, so out came the engine again, got the gear off, and it turned out this BRAND NEW PART had been made with the incorrect type of metal! He remade the bushing with the correct material on his lathe, fitted it, put the engine back in, and all is now fine. It seems that if you want something done right, you just have to do it all yourself! The progress is phenomenal with the guys you have working with you, we are SO excited for you and Dot and we love to see all the steps, big and small towards your wonderful goals
Those pegs? Unbelievable, absolutely unbelievable. As soon as I saw them my mind made a draw plate to fix them. Your jig is much better!

Just remember, nobody is ever completely worthless. They can always serve as a bad example. :)

Gaining a new appreciation for timber framing! Seems like a giant 3-D puzzle, with Howard's (and your) meticulousness I'm expecting the whole thing to just fit together on-site like magic!
Beautiful workmanship on the timbers. While I admire your quick work at making a die to thin down the pegs that were long enough and of better quality, you still have quite a bit of expensive kindling. I think that your time is valuable also. Thank you for giving a demonstration of why those pegs wouldn't do and for showing the time and energy required to solve the problem that someone else made. Wow those pegs are absolutely diabolical you looked proper miffed while you were filming that segment, as you say if you want it done right do it yourself. I bet that company owner has nicked your idea for a die and made a set of his own for different sizes to avoid this happening in future, you should charge him a licencing fee for the privilege. On a happier note the lambs are looking happy and healthy and the barn is coming on leaps and bounds can't wait to see the assembly it's gonna be awesome well done Kris and Dot and the timber framing team.

The quality of Kris's design and prep, the superbe quality of the timber framing - watching those big beams come together in complex joints with millimetre precision, and then ... Those pegs. I think Kris was very controlled to camera though the frustration was clear. A tribute to you Kris that you kept it together and as always took it forward. Im constantly Impressed by what you do!

The Peg company should be asking you to make them some tooling for them to produce consistent products absolutely stunning craftsmanship that barn will be I am extremely jealous

Utterly excellent work, and also a fabulous insight in to how a gang of craftsmen would have constructed a significant size building all those years ago, and of which probably quite a few are still standing.

This is nothing short of perfection personified. In every aspect it demonstrates what thoughtful planning, problem solving and skills in handling tools can achieve that all combines here to create a massive monument in wood that will for generations last well beyond the lives of those craftsmen that built it. As each stage is met, you can hear the cries of joy by those involved when it all comes together.

I lost a good friend & fellow woodworker to pneumoconiosis directly caused by inhaling fine wood particles & another ended up with nasal cancer.

Really enjoying these long, framing videos mate. Right up my alley! But I can't believe a so called reputable company could get those pegs so wrong. Such a simple and straightforward job. Even a first day apprentice should get a peg right! Like you say: if you want a job done right - do it yourself. Good luck mate!
Yeah ... "wrong" is a nicer word than they deserve. "Wrong" is when you make a mistake, say make them the wrong diameter. These are just plain badly made. Incompetently and/or indifferently made. By people who just didn't care.

Makes you wonder the condition and state of thier timber frames probably tell thier customer's that the splits add character to the frame. You can't fit a square peg to a round hole. Brilliant, really enjoyable site, thanks Mick.

Let’s hope the quality checking will improve with company who made the pegs, although they seem to have known what they were doing, if the sample pack is anything to go by, so somethings isn’t quite right there.

I am! I am over the moon with how it is all coming along. But I can't get carried away with that yet. there is still lots to do. in order to keep quality control and make sure everything is going to plan I can't get to focused on the positives.
No, I know it is a very long process, I did a much smaller version myself and it took me 4 years. Great idea to get the team of workers in, you’ll be doing the next one just with volunteers.

I don't understand why its good to not be nasty to a useless supplier. Maybe that's why we suffer such inferior work that we pay excessive prices for. It appears acceptable to pay for rubbish these days, which I find ridiculous.
Chalk and cheese really, the quality of craftsmanship by the whole team offset by a peg supplier with no quality control and pride of product, I admire you Kris because you remained professional even though you probably wanted to scream from the nearest hill top. This barn frame is looking so very good and will look the same when all completed and on your land. Great job👍😎
That's crazy that the company would even think about selling pegs in that volume without setting up an efficient process. Having each of those pegs hand shaped only must take forever, and clearly is inferior. Such a simple tool saves so much labor.

Did you say 600 pegs? I guess you need 40 people to all ask for a sample pack and then send them all to you? That way you only get the best.
I just really wish you could share the company name without any fear of a defamation suit. They certainly deserve to have reduced sales because of this.

Chris, I'm glad you showed what kind of garbage someone is willing to produce and has no qualms charging you full price for it.
A good thing to come out of the crappy pegs is the die you made. That will come in handy many times in the future, I'm sure :^) There's always something earned from every mistake, even the mistakes of others. I make a lot of different stuff myself and am constantly learning-very often by my stupid mistakes :^) It's frustrating, but it pays in dividends later on :^)
