Rio Dell was founded first, up on the hill to the north, by Lorenzo Painter. As immigrants came to the area for work in the mill, they settled in what is now downtown Rio Dell, nearer to the river. That was Wildwood. In 1965, Rio Dell became incorporated, and the whole area took that name officially.

Pacific Avenue, on the hill to your right, was the original Redwood Highway. There was a hotel and stores up there. Old Rio Dell.
Its a shame what these freeways do to the downtown of these little towns. The downtown of Eureka is ruined because of the malls.
Where is the Nutshell??
What do you mean?
