Must Watch Before Buying A Used Minolta X-700 Film Camera in 2022! Used Film Camera Buying Tips

  • TLDR: Don't buy X-700, buy X-500/X-570 instead! If you are thinking about buying a used Minolta X-700 because you saw on TH-cam that it was the best camera of its age when it came out in 1981. Yeah, right... it may be the best back in the year 1982... but in the year 2022, most of these cameras (I'm talking about over 80-90% failure rate) will fail and will be time-consuming to properly fix due to the infamous cheap capacitor issue plaguing these cameras. X-570 has the same issue with capacitors but will only require one easy soldering job at the bottom of the camera plate, while X-700 used two cheap capacitors and one on top is impossible to service by yourself.
    You will be much better off buying a used Minolta X-500/X-570(US) amzn.to/33GjnZy
    And this is the best capacitor you can get for the X-700/X-500/X-570. I bought a pack of 10 for like $10 bucks.

    Good sensible info. I have a lot of X700 and x500 models plus others. Been inexpensive to buy and use. Time to replace light seals on two of them. Well worth buying them

    Im happy that when I picked up one for cheap, I found out both capacitors have been replaced by the previous owner. But the current problem is now it wont fire the shutter at all.. I can override the advancing lever with ease, camera beeps when its on and lightmeter works, but the shutter will not respond at all. Very weird.

    • @TheGizmoGarage
      @TheGizmoGarage  ปีที่แล้ว

      How do you confirm both capacitors has been replaced? Did the seller provide proof? Based on yur description it could still be one of the capacitors that controls shutter release

    Before seeing your video, I ordered a refurbished Minolta x700 from KEH. A professional photographer friend recommended it for me when I told him that my budget was $300.00. I got the 50mm F 1.7 lens to go with it. I spent $250.00. It’s arriving today. I’m hoping that the capacitors have been changed.

      Check if shutter is functioning properly and shutter speeds are accurate if battery is in good condition and shutter indicators are changing according to the light intensity.

    If you have a Japanese model, you should be ok. It was the later years when they changed production location, they then started using cheaper capacitors.

    • @TheGizmoGarage
      @TheGizmoGarage  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I believe they used cheap caps early on during the early 80s when the camera came out. After the recession they reverted back to using better caps for later models.

      If it's cheap (less than $80) and it works fine then sure, use it till it dies then get a X570 instead, otherwise, no need to spend stupid money for it.

      @@TheGizmoGarage I have the option to buy a Pentax Me Super or a Minolta x570... which one is more resistant or better?

    • @TheGizmoGarage
      @TheGizmoGarage  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@axelcarobustos Comparable, I personally like X570's look despite it's pretty plasticky, the ME Super is more compact, into Olympus OM territory, but I think the shutter dial and controls on top right of the camera looks really ugly.

    Most of the time, it's not the capacitor. It is usually a battery cover that has gone bad.

    A couple of months ago I got a perfectly working X700 with the last version of the MD 50mm f/1.4 for 130 euro, now I'm curious to see if it was already serviced, or not yet and it will die soon. I'm pretty scared to open the bottom and see it by myself :)

      The bottom plate is very easy to open and inspect, just use a good quality JIS screwdriver I use these and they are great: amzn.to/3OSGrYW

    Hi, two weeks ago I bought X700 on the flea market and I took some photos and camera skipped two frames. Can it be capacitor problem? Can this problem have influence on the problem with lightmeter in P mode or in other modes?

    • @TheGizmoGarage
      @TheGizmoGarage  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      If it skipped frames it could be contact point to the shutter release that's not working properly. When capacitor dies, the camera will simply quit operating the shutter and/or meter.
