As far as I understand Aurelien's explanation the real magic happens in diffusion speed and diffusion directionality. Although it's a complex module with serious math, it is easy to use with presets. I just select the required mode (sharpen, local contrast, blur, etc.) and play with the iterations slide, plus the edge management controls to remove halos if there is any. It is one of my must-have modules in my workflow.

Yes, the presets give a very good start, and when you understand what each slider does, it enables you to choose the right one to move. I use edge management too and also fiddle around a bit with the speeds sometimes, usually to add a bit of noise reduction for example.

Another great contribution to understanding of dt. Thanks.

Like your mathematical explanations but this separate practical video really helped to clarify how to use that knowledge. Thanks!

Isn't the contrast equalizer a faster, easier and equally good module for local contrast and sharpening?

Hi Nicholas. I think I’ve kind of asked you something similar earlier but I wondered how well diffuse or sharpen works on your Mac? My 2009 iMac is really struggling with the module turned on and I’m wondering whether to upgrade to an M1 iMac or spring for a secondhand PC with a separate graphics card to run Linux and OpenCL just for Darktable. Cheers, Tony

Hi Tony, I have a 2019 Mac with 40 Go of Ram. The module works fine, although it does slow the process down. I'm making my first "full edit" video during which I use several instances of diffuse/sharpen so you will be able to see how fast/slow it works. As for the choice between Mac and Linux, it depends on much more than a photo editing app !

@@adabbleinphotography8721 Thanks! Will look out for the video. I've only ever owned Macs, since they came out with the first Bondai Blue iMac (showing my age...) and you got a choice of three options rather than the three thousand or so you would get thrown in your face if you walked into a computer shop and tried to talk to a salesperson at that time. If I got a PC, it would only be for Darktable so would have to be secondhand (I think I can actually use my ancient iMac as a display). Ok, I'm just blathering now....

Really well done. I think if you were able to choose images that you could share when doing your videos then people could try to reproduce what you show. Might be an added bit of confidence that they have it right as you have explained it.....Your stuff is a really solid contribution I'm glad you decided to throw your had in the ring....

Thanks Todd, I could add a link to raw files but links are always perishable... and I need to avoid people maybe. It is a good idea though. Thanks for the encouragement!

@@adabbleinphotography8721 Perhaps start a thread on pixls and post your videos as Boris does with his editing moments thread..then you could post any requested material and have a more interactive duscussion
