This interview often gets misinterpreted. The Bayern manager Uli Hoeneß just wanted to guard Toni and to reduce all the hype around him, because often young players get too quick and too much hype and attention, which they can't handle at that young age. A 4-5 years contract would jump Kroos to a 50-60 million player at that time. 25 million was right for the circumstances and ge wanted to leave so Bayern sold him instead of letting him go for free one year later.

I never understood why he was so disrespected, why most people didn't appreciate his quality and intelligence on the pitch. Sure, he wasn't "flashy", but damn, he was so very consistently great with the way that he manipulated the opposite defense and was able to make perfect passes for his team mates.
It's natural, but also sad to see another amazing playmaker to say goodbye to the beautiful game. There aren't many players like him in this game's history.

Hoeneß reacted in this way at the time to protect Kross from the press. Shortly before that, Sebastian Deissler, the greatest German talent at the time, was constantly put under pressure by the German press until he ended his career at a very young age with depression. I'm not a Bayern fan, but Hoeneß always protected his players.

Belittling the players at his club and intentionally talking down their performance has nothing to do with protection. For whatever reason Hoeneß didn't like Toni Kroos that much. He used almost every occasion to show his disrespect and Rummenigge isn't that much better. Kroos however paid back by eliminating Bayern in UCL and delivering that amazing pass to Vini in Munich.

Kroos is always coming first in key passes, progressive passes, passes into final third, interceptions, tackles, big chances created etc. even in goals and assists per game. But because the other 3 can do a silky body feint or skill there and there, they are seen as better, when I. Reality what makes a midfielder great Kroos clears them in only Xavi comes very close.
