As someone who has been in your shoes with both my brother and my ex, I can tell you that mental health issues can often be a bigger problem for family and friends then for the person who is ill because there is little support for them. And, it is those family and friends who are often expected to pick up the pieces for the ill and to clean up whatever mess they have created. And the stress of never knowing when the phone rings if it's going to be one of "those" calls can be overwhelming. The life of the person who is ill can quickly consume that of their supporters. It seems though that as a supporter, you are lucky in the sense that Travis' issues have not been manifesting in physically destructive ways for himself or others. Fingers crossed! And one final unpleasant reality check... It's great that Travis is determined to fight with all he has and I am hoping for the best, but you must, absolutely must not allow his issues bury you. You need to be prepared to save yourself first (like when a flight attendant tells you to put your own mask on first then help your child with theirs) or to wash your hands of the entire situation altogether because sadly, there are those who only get worse not better. However, I think Travis will get through this with flying colors!

As someone who has been dealing with mental health issues, anxiety depression along with many other things from childhood you don't want to continuously burden others with your problems so you just bare it in silence and put on a happy face to make others comfortable. One minute you're happy and within seconds your crying uncontrollably to not wanting to do the basic things. I can tell you it's hard but it's good to have a good support system of people who are understanding and willing to listen and offer whatever support they can to make it a little better for you

I was in the same situation 10 years ago. I found out that my good friend is manic depressive and only found out that he’s already in and out of hospital for so long. First time I saw him inside the hospital , I was broken. He was drugged and seeing him and talking to him was like his soul was not there anymore. It was a lot for me take that I had to go away while he was getting treatment coz I felt that I was getting dragged down and losing control over my emotions too. To be there by his side is not an easy feat Mario. I admire you for that and you need to take of yourself too coz you need extra of everything, for you and for him. Good luck 🙏🏻

Mental health is difficult. I suffer anxiety and it takes time and a lot of self-discovery to find out how to get better. A lot of people stigmatize getting help from a mental health professional but it's one of the most important first steps. Travis is lucky to have a great person like you next to him. I’m so sad to see this. Depression is literally a war that never ends, battles finish and you have time of rest bite, but it’s always there. I’ve just gone through the darkest year in my life after escaping from a narcissistic, emotional and mentally abusive relationship, the gaslighting, invalidation and trauma bond is the most incredibly powerful force. I’ve been diagnosed with PTSD because of it and for the first time ever I had to fight myself from taking my own life, I didn’t know pain like that existed, I was also grieving. Thank you for taking his hand in the dark and walking with him. Take him to the light 💙 We all have mental well-being concerns, for some it’s critical. Depression isn’t a bad day. Mental health awareness is vital. So thank you ❤️💙My loved ones, family and friends literally saved my life, I was no longer able too, so you’re so important in his narrative Mario. 💙❤️ wishing you both a happy, peaceful life 💙❤️

You‘re such a good friend.. People still don’t take mental health issues serious and that‘s a big problem in this society. You just get judged, doesn’t matter what. And that‘s awful. So many people stay quiet about their MH because no one is listening. It‘s really really a good point that both of you talk about this. And people should do that more often, in a SERIOUS way. And people should be open to listen and not judging. I hope so much for Travis it will get better for him. And everybody else who’s dealing with this. Please everybody, stay strong. I have struggled with this most of my life and never had someone be there like you are for your friend. Just wanted to say what an amazing person you are for being there for your friend. That's the most important thing you can do. Keep loving him, supporting him, and accepting hi, for who he is.
Travis is incredibly strong,and he understands what he needs to do,far more than I did at his age struggling with depression. Now in my late 40's I have found a great medication that's keeping me stable. You Mario,are doing all you can,just being there and listening to him is the greatest thing you can do. Coming from someone that has lived with a bipolar person for many years....stay strong for yourself too! Go and get some therapy to assist you in helping him, you will need it. Once he finds a medication along with therapy and a constant routine to bring more normalcy to his reality, he will feel much better. No more rainy days, maybe just a little cloudy ones. It's unreal how you and I share the same "responsibility" to a friend. I too have a friend that suffers from real, Depression and feel so helpless. Hardest for me, is when he gets these "episodes" he pushes me away and although it's not rejection, it feels very much like it. No, there's nothing I can do to help him in these times but I so badly want to "fix" this for him. I love him so much and for me, it's also compounded by two factors: 1. he's in another Country and can't see him every day and 2. because I'm 62 years old. I don't consider myself gay as I was married to a woman more than 35 years, but because I really love him. Can't thank you enough for sharing this video, Mario. Mario - Never feel helpless. I know you want to get in there and make everything ok. I have PTSD, Anxiety and Depression. What you are doing for Travis means more to him than you could ever know. A simple phone call and say how are you doing, means a lot. Giving a great big hug, means a lot. Calling and say how about we go out to eat or to a movie, means a lot. If he doesn't want to go out say is ok if I come over with some food and we can watch a movie or play a game, means a lot. A friend is wonderful thing for anyone, and you are a good friend. It's ok to feel sad and to let Travis know you are sad. It lets him know you understand, and you are there. But as I said being there is so much of a big deal for him.

You're an amazing person. I am disabled due to my severe clinical depression and anxiety. Where I live there are no therapists that accept Medicare. I want and need therapy so bad but at $300 a session it's not feasible. I just continue to take my meds and try my best each new day. I wish I had a friend like you.
Thank you for publicly advocating the importance of mental health, especially what you are going through as someone else's support system. It is extremely hard to balance your own needs and to support someone who's going through a tough time. What really matters at this point is that YOU ARE THERE FOR HIM - check in with him every once a while and be physically present. It's hard to ask someone to seek your help when they don't have a clearer idea what causes the stress or anxiety. Being there for him, both spiritually and physically, will do a lot - more powerful than you think. However, it's also very important that you take care of your OWN needs. If you're not well, how are you going to look after other people, right? :) Sending lots of love and hugs from here. I'm here for you if you need someone to talk to - even though we don't know each other, but just letting you know that my offer still stands.

As someone who dealt with clinical depression for nearly 40 yrs and kept it hidden along with a suicide attempt in my 20’s. Keeping it hidden for so long also sabatoged and pushed away any friends I had. Your an awesome person, friend and a true heartfelt human being, world needs more of you. Just being there for Travis is all the support he needs to work it through, just hold the space for him even if no words are said. Since he is wanting to work through it, I believe he will come out being in a much better space. It will take time to work through it, he is on the right path, especially with you there. I know this video is old now, and I watched it back when it was new... I wanted to watch it again because my beautiful son, who regularly dealt with depression, succumbed to it a little over a year ago and took his own life at age 22. Things can turn on a dime, so never cease to remind him that he's loved and you're there. My mind is filled with "would have, could have, should have" thoughts every day, but I also know that I did everything I knew to do. Just... Continue to be his friend. Grayson's death destroyed many, and he was a light to so many even though much of his internal world was dark. Thank you both for talking about it. ❤

That is a very accurate description of the "healthcare" system here in the US. It should be called "sickness maintenance care." It's absolutely insane. You can get pills and surgeries but acupuncture, massage, chiropractic, counseling, therapy, addiction care, and any other "alternative" therapies are, for the most part, paid for out of pocket, so most of us can't use them. When you have to create a "Go Fund Me" for your healthcare needs, there is a problem with the system.

I am sending so much love to the both of you. My husband has been dealing with depression for several years, that comes form issues and trauma from his childhood. As someone who also deals with severe clinical depression, and has done so for half of my life at this point, I wish I had friends in my life who love and support me like you do for Travis.

I’m so sad to see this. Depression is literally a war that never ends, battles finish and you have time of rest bite, but it’s always there. I’ve just gone through the darkest year in my life after escaping from a narcissistic, emotional and mentally abusive relationship, the gaslighting, invalidation and trauma bond is the most incredibly powerful force. I’ve been diagnosed with PTSD because of it and for the first time ever I had to fight myself from taking my own life, I didn’t know pain like that existed, I was also grieving. Thank you for taking his hand in the dark and walking with him. Take him to the light 💙 We all have mental well-being concerns, for some it’s critical. Depression isn’t a bad day. Mental health awareness is vital. So thank you ❤️💙My loved ones, family and friends literally saved my life, I was no longer able too, so you’re so important in his narrative Mario. 💙❤️ wishing you both a happy, peaceful life 💙❤️

You just get judged, doesn’t matter what. And that‘s awful. So many people stay quiet about their MH because no one is listening.
It‘s really really a good point that both of you talk about this. And people should do that more often, in a SERIOUS way.
And people should be open to listen and not judging.
I hope so much for Travis it will get better for him. And everybody else who’s dealing with this.

Travis has been so raw and open and it's amazing to see how deeply you care for him, Mario. He will ONLY make it through this is he keeps seeking help and has the support of his dearest friends...his chosen family.
I have struggled with this most of my life and never had someone be there like you are for your friend. Just wanted to say what an amazing person you are for being there for your friend. That's the most important thing you can do. Keep loving him, supporting him, and accepting hi, for who he is.
Travis is incredibly strong,and he understands what he needs to do,far more than I did at his age struggling with depression. Now in my late 40's I have found a great medication that's keeping me stable.

Coming from someone that has lived with a bipolar person for many years....stay strong for yourself too! Go and get some therapy to assist you in helping him, you will need it. Once he finds a medication along with therapy and a constant routine to bring more normalcy to his reality, he will feel much better. No more rainy days, maybe just a little cloudy ones.

It's unreal how you and I share the same "responsibility" to a friend. I too have a friend that suffers from real, Depression and feel so helpless. Hardest for me, is when he gets these "episodes" he pushes me away and although it's not rejection, it feels very much like it. No, there's nothing I can do to help him in these times but I so badly want to "fix" this for him. I love him so much and for me, it's also compounded by two factors: 1. he's in another Country and can't see him every day and 2. because I'm 62 years old. I don't consider myself gay as I was married to a woman more than 35 years, but because I really love him. Can't thank you enough for sharing this video, Mario. You ARE making a difference in this world. Stay focused.:)))
Mario - Never feel helpless. I know you want to get in there and make everything ok. I have PTSD, Anxiety and Depression. What you are doing for Travis means more to him than you could ever know. A simple phone call and say how are you doing, means a lot. Giving a great big hug, means a lot. Calling and say how about we go out to eat or to a movie, means a lot. If he doesn't want to go out say is ok if I come over with some food and we can watch a movie or play a game, means a lot. A friend is wonderful thing for anyone, and you are a good friend. It's ok to feel sad and to let Travis know you are sad. It lets him know you understand, and you are there. But as I said being there is so much of a big deal for him.

You're an amazing person. I am disabled due to my severe clinical depression and anxiety. Where I live there are no therapists that accept Medicare. I want and need therapy so bad but at $300 a session it's not feasible. I just continue to take my meds and try my best each new day. I wish I had a friend like you.
Thank you for publicly advocating the importance of mental health, especially what you are going through as someone else's support system. It is extremely hard to balance your own needs and to support someone who's going through a tough time. What really matters at this point is that YOU ARE THERE FOR HIM - check in with him every once a while and be physically present. It's hard to ask someone to seek your help when they don't have a clearer idea what causes the stress or anxiety. Being there for him, both spiritually and physically, will do a lot - more powerful than you think. However, it's also very important that you take care of your OWN needs. If you're not well, how are you going to look after other people, right? :)

I know how you feel when you were touching about how you had to be the strong one for the sake of Travis where it ended up putting you in an anxious state of mind and the feeling of guilt for wanting to do more. Its definitely a stressful place to be in and I am glad you discussed that important aspect. I love your beautiful friendship with Travis and I hope that Travis will come back and feeling more at peace and back on the path of working towards his happiness and with Mario supporting him on the side!
As someone who dealt with clinical depression for nearly 40 yrs and kept it hidden along with a suicide attempt in my 20’s. Keeping it hidden for so long also sabatoged and pushed away any friends I had. Your an awesome person, friend and a true heartfelt human being, world needs more of you. Just being there for Travis is all the support he needs to work it through, just hold the space for him even if no words are said. Since he is wanting to work through it, I believe he will come out being in a much better space. It will take time to work through it, he is on the right path, especially with you there. I know this video is old now, and I watched it back when it was new... I wanted to watch it again because my beautiful son, who regularly dealt with depression, succumbed to it a little over a year ago and took his own life at age 22. Things can turn on a dime, so never cease to remind him that he's loved and you're there. My mind is filled with "would have, could have, should have" thoughts every day, but I also know that I did everything I knew to do. Just... Continue to be his friend. Grayson's death destroyed many, and he was a light to so many even though much of his internal world was dark. Thank you both for talking about it. ❤

That is a very accurate description of the "healthcare" system here in the US. It should be called "sickness maintenance care." It's absolutely insane. You can get pills and surgeries but acupuncture, massage, chiropractic, counseling, therapy, addiction care, and any other "alternative" therapies are, for the most part, paid for out of pocket, so most of us can't use them. When you have to create a "Go Fund Me" for your healthcare needs, there is a problem with the system.

I suffer from anxiety and depression. It is common to internalize what you're going through to not "bring down the group." I know it well. That you are there for Travis and are willing to listen is the very best thing you can do. Be well, my friend.
