I wish we were allowed to write scores like this in German TV nowadays ...
This video really shows so much about what filmscoring can be. Outstanding!!!

This is amazing!!! This shows exactly what it's like in the trenches of film scoring. Mr. Goldsmith was such a genius, and the musicians are so great! Thank you!!!

Wow, what a great video of Jerry Goldsmith in action!
I remember originally scoffing at the idea of buying THE MEPHISTO WALTZ/THE OTHER CD because I was not crazy about this particular score, but after seeing this video, I think that I'll give it another listen.

Such a fascinating video, Goldsmith`s work had such a cutting edge in the mid 60`s and 70`s, scores such as "Freud" "Seconds" "Planet Of The Apes" "The Illustrated Man" and "The Reincarnation Of Peter Proud" it seems amazing now that avant garde, experimental, atonal scores like these were permitted for main stream movies. So many of the soundtracks for today sound derivative and impersonal, able to be swapped from one movie to the next, which themselves are generic.
I am not biased against present day composers, I love Ramin Djawadi`s music for every series of "Game Of Thrones", and I accept the Swinging 60`s and early 70`s were much freer, less commercially restricted decades, it is just hearing this amazing score, and seeing a possessed Jerry Goldsmith in full flight seems magical to me.

Part of this footage was used in a documentary about stress whee Goldsmith mentions that composing film music relieves stress!

The music is--as he mentions--a paraphrase of Liszt's Mephisto Waltz no.1; a "horror parody" or "Verfremdung", actually, playing around with all the Liszt themes and also throwing in some "dies irae" fragments for extra spice; of course it is only this score that gives the movie some excitement; I just wished I could see the pianist Jakob Gimpel as well who recorded the original Liszt Mephisto Waltz for this movie!

23:13 Kenn Wannberg? Didn't know he worked with Goldsmith. He was more John Williams' music editor.
    RIP Kenn Wannberg (June 28, 1930 - January 26, 2022)

This ia a very well-edited piece. Produced specifically to spotlight the music and composer, it seems. What was its original venue?

Fasvibsying viewing. I have the Varese CD but I tend to play the suite from "The Other" much more. This music disturbs me but after watching this I'm going to get to know this fucked up to fuck score. Jerry at his total zenith here. I know "The Other" is incomplete and I'm really hoping they release a complete version soon. Does the Varese CD contain the COMPLETE score for Mephisto?

It's all Goldsmith here. Only similarity is the shrieking violins (In Herrmann's Psycho they're playing cascading major 7ths - here they're playing between the bridge and tailpiece).
Humphrey Searle's score for The Haunting is very different to Herrmann. Much more atonal and pointillist.

@SamualShark Funny thing is, John Williams is also an avid smoker (I don't know if he still enjoys lighting one.) It's that generation. So yeah. Fate is a funny thing.

This is a rehearsal of the tune "The latest victim" Track 9 on the Varese CD.
Although atonal Filmscores were already composed in the early 1950s (Rosenman) after the late romantic style of a Steiner Korngold and Rozsa, and although there exists serious "Neue Music" scores in the late 60s (Norths 2001, Phantasic Voyage, Planet of the apes) the experimental period in the sonoristic idiom of a Penderecki (clusters) in filmscoring starts in the early 70s (Williams´ Images, Lalo Schifrin. This athematic mood music from this period is unsatisfactory to here for the most time and can not stand for it´s own musicaly in the most cases.

Alexander Keth where is this athematic? Goldsmith always had the habit of utilizing themes, although they sometimes can be hidden. Indeed his earlier style (before Star Trek The Motion Picture) can be a bit hard to like if you only know the his output from the 80s and 90s. But, the man was an absolut genius and his music is in now way unsatisfactory.
