Eric Rohmer made a load of great summer films. A Summer's Tale, of course, but also Pauline at the Beach, The Aviator's Wife and Claire's Knee. You can never get tired of Rohmer.
not to be basic and contemporary (in the royal ocean film society's comment section of all places) but after seeing "Call Me by Your Name" it will forever go in my personal list. I can feel the heat in every scene, what the stone must feel like under beating italian summer sun... But my forever favorite is definitely "Deprisa, deprisa" Spanish reckless youth movie from the early 80s (but I can't find a subtitled version anywhere unfortunately). I loved this video by the way! Gonna check out Black Orpheus immediately. Thank you for all your hard work and hope you're staying safe in these trying times!
Summer fucking sucks. Only thing it’s good for is school being off, and that only applies for children. Above a certain age, it’s pretty much the worst.
One of my favourite summer movies that has stuck with me since childhood is Les Demoiselles de Rochefort, all the signing and dancing, bright colours and sunny festival atmosphere really are peak summer vacation feelings for me.
I know you said you weren’t going to mention super mainstream stuff, but Dazed and Confused will always be my perfect summer movie. No other movie has captured the feeling of the start of summer, when the possibilities feel endless and summer feels like it will never end.
Hey Royal Ocean, I was wondering if you'd ever re-upload or unprivate your video The Joy of the Summer Blockbuster, as that was one of my favourites and I would really love to watch it again.
I’m partial to the 2013 Jim Rash/Nat Faxon film THE WAY WAY BACK, with Toni Colette playing the mother of a sad teenaged boy who DOES NOT want to spend his summer in a beach community in the mid 1980’s with her nasty new boyfriend (Steve Carnell) and his kids but manages to BS his way into a job at a water park and fall under the tutelage of an aging lifeguard there (Sam Rockwell) who helps him find out how strong he really is....A Great film, and kind of forgotten despite the fact it was a modest hit
I've always loved Avanti!. Billy Wilder's career is fascinating because he pretty much has a masterpiece or two in every decade he worked, even though the atmosphere around his films' creation keeps changing. I'm glad he never changed too much with the times. Also THANK YOU for that shout out to Matinee. One of the best movies about being a kid that is aimed at adults who never entirely stopped being kids.
3 totaly different films that I loved, and make me think of summer are: - the way way back - (2013) - a summer's tale (1996) - this one should have been on your list - Highway (2002)
No joke, your take on the Beach Party movies is one of the absolute best reviews ever. I'm a diehard fan of the AIP Frankie/Annette/Eric Von Zipper flicks (I've probably seen each one at least 15 times each, and I'm not exaggerating). I love that you have an appreciation for them too. They're weird and make no sense, but damn it, they're so summery and campy and highlight such a weird moment in cinematic history. And I can't help but model my Summer look after early 60's surf movie culture.
I would probably recommend some of the earlier Lemon Popsicle films... Lemon Popsicle (1978), Going Steady (1979), Hot Bubblegum (1981), and Baby Love (1984), they are somewhere in-between Porky's and, maybe, Where the Boys Are; from how you describe its narrative. They were Israeli teen comedies made by the guys behind The "Infamous" Cannon Group... the first film was remade as The Last American Virgin (1982) and both films have a kinda dark ending to them! Perhaps a little more like Fast Times at Ridgemont High (1982), in contrast. I can't forget to include that One Crazy Summer (1986), Summer School (1987) and Summer Rental (1985) are great summer films, as well... albeit, more mainstream. Also, Mischief (1985), starring Kelly Preston's... Naughty bits!
My favourite summer film is Call Me By Your Name and yes, it's a summer film. It perfectly captures that relaxed and sometimes even lazy feeling you get in the summer while also being a beautiful love story with great acting for great characters all around.
My favorite movie to watch in the summer is "Zazie Dans le Metro" I have it playing in the background as moving wallpaper in the summer. Jacques Demy movies are great to visit in the summer because of the candy coated explosion of colors, especially "The Young Girls of Rochefort." Although "Antonia's Line" takes place over decades, it's the farmhouse and big communal dinners in the garden that make it feel so summery. This was a fun video, you should do one for each season.
My top Summer flicks: -Beach Blanket Bingo (100% agree) -Fun in Acapulco (Elvis flick) -Once Upon a Time in Hollywood (not a Summer movie, but it feels like it) -Gidget -Love in a Goldfish Bowl -April Love (technically Spring)
Oh I absolutely loved this list. Some others I'd add for myself: 1931's Street Scene, 1958's Bonjour Tristesse, 1954's Three Coins in the Fountain, and 1945's State Fair (Which might be set in spring? Fall? In an apocalypse? Who knows.)
I watched Beach Blanket Bingo and couldn't agree more. It's got so much great schlock, and Don Rickles' roast was a highlight for sure. Every trope was getting it's fair share in the spotlight, too. It's all very silly, and has some events I don't want to spoil that just add to the slapdash "Frankie/Annette vehicle" plot. But there's one dark mark on the film. Unfortunately... nobody plays beach blanket bingo! Even though the rules are clearly laid out in the opening song, not once do we see the game being played or even referenced! I know these were all produced in a short period of time, but that's no excuse not to deliver on a promise. Otherwise, yes, it is the exemplary beach movie for the reasons discussed in the video, at least from my perspective. It's all very worn, like a pair of comfortable sandals. Everybody knows what they're doing and what they're going for, and they don't sweat the details. It's just fun.
Hey guys. So glad you appreciate 'Avanti'. I think it is one of the greatest of Wilder's films which makes it one of the greatest films of all time. Well done. Great presentation overall as well!
Thank you for these recommendations 🥺 ive been feeling like ive exhausted all movies i loved and felt like i had nothing else to be inspired from but these all genuinely sparked my interests. 💖
"Jazz On A Summer's Day". I think I saw it the same year I first saw "Black Orpheus", and I think the two are very similar. "Jazz On A Summer's Day" appears to be a concert film, but it's really the best people-watching you're likely to experience in a color, 1958 festival setting. Sure, there's great musical performances by Dinah Washington, Louis Armstrong, and a cast of lesser-known jazz greats. But more often than not, the camera is focused on individuals in the crowd... not panning, but focused for extended periods, on very human 1950's idiosynchratic couples, familes, white and black, wearing hats, smoking pipes, fussing with sunhats and purses, adjusting binoculars, and enjoying the scene. There also happens to be a reggata happening int he Newport Bay, and there's a roving band of revellers driving in an early 20th century jalopy, playing ragtime on acoustic instruments, spilling out of the convertable, dancing on rooftops, and making merry around the neighborhood. There's no plot, dialogue, or trajectory other than the pastiche of one imagined day condensed from three. The pace and point of view is a lot like Hulot's Holiday or Black Oprheus, where you just exist in the time and place, and let the setting pull you in. If you're with me this far, you'll love it.
One of the more recent summer films I like is Jim Rash and Nat Facon, "The way way back" a lovely summer story mix with a coming of age. BTW thank for the homework, I will do my best to complete this movies. They all look great.
I’ve seen where the boys are before, and I share your admiration and delight with the film. It’s one of the few 60s beach movie films I can actually get invested in due to its honesty on darker themes and overall tone and aesthetic. The cast also does their roles remarkably well.I can connect with these characters more than I can the paper doll rolls that Avalon and Funticello played. Good movie choice 👍
6:23 You finally mentioned them!😃 I grew up on the Beach Party movies! I wished I could live in them for a little bit. My favorite is Bikini Beach Party.😁
My list lacks lesser know movies but oh well: Swiss army man Mad max: fury road hell or high water No country for old men The man with no name trilogy Little miss sunshine Peanut butter falcon Midsommar Mid 90s Green Room Alice doesn't live here anymore
Very good recommandations! I love Orfeu Negro, Les vacances de Monsieur Hulot & Avanti!. One I think you missed on is Rob Reiner's Stand by Me. Honorable mentions for Adventureland & Dazed and Confused. Ho, I almost forgot Le Grand Chemin (Jean-Loup Hubert, 1987) a gorgeous and tender film.
Another great video. Keep it up man, you're quickly becoming my favourite youtuber. Glad to say that I've learnt a a whole lot about films since I started watching your work almost a year ago :)
Okay, I'll give this one a spin too: The Green Ray (1986), Pauline at the Beach (1983), A Summer’s Tale (1996), A Canterbury Tale (1944), Celine and Julie go Boating (1973), Zabriskie Point (1970), Summer Hours (2008), A Nos Amours (1983), Smiles of a Summer Night (1955), People on Sunday (1930), By the Bluest of Seas (1936), A Day in the County (1936), Walkabout (1970), Two English Girls and the Love for the Continent (1971), Accident (1968)
Great video! I had never heard of any of these movies before, so it was nice of you to showcase them to us here. I have to say, the one that I seem drawn to the most is “Matinee”. There’s just something about it that makes me want to check it out. I think you should totally make a video listing great movies about movie making. Thanks for the recommendation, really got me to get outside my comfort zone and watch something I usually wouldn't be interested in. I think I watched it mostly cause I was interested in the story of the actress who turned into a nun, I had to see how far that shift was. I think Where the Boys Are is a wholesome film that covers some very sensitive topics (especially for the time). It made me laugh a bunch and occasionally made me sad, but it had that feel good vibe where you could easily put this on and everyone could enjoy. Thanks Royal Ocean Film Society, I have the criterion of Black Orpheus so that'll be the next one I'll tackle.

Glad to know that you prefer Gremlins 2 over the first one. Gremlins 1 is good, but The New Batch, man, it gets better with each new viewing. I definitely need to see Matinee, though. It's top priority on my Joe Dante watchlist and I have yet to track it down on DVD.
While not all of them are "summer" films, they definitely have a summer "feel" to them. My recommendations would be: "American Graffiti", "The Hollywood Knights", "The Three Caballeros", "Slacker", "The Before Trilogy", and "Pikachu's Vacation".
Black Orfeus happens before carnival which is certainly winter time, which is certainly (or at least technically) summer in the southern hemisphere where its filmed. So no cheating!
Nice selections, but how about Pauline at the Beach....or The Green Ray....or Claire's Knee...or La Collectionneuse? All by Eric Rohmer and the last three now streaming on Criterion Channel pretty sure. Recently discovered Black Orpheus on HBO Max and was surprised at how much I enjoyed, and believe it's on Criterion Channel also.
Excellente Liste ! Personaly my favorites summer movies are italians comedies of the 60' like "Il sorpasso" (my favorite of all) or Signore & signori and every Rohmer films. I think he filmed the summers on my country like nobody =)
Might be a regional thing-I’m from Midwest region of US-but I pronounce Euridice (sp?) as “yur rid eh see”. Almost thought there was another Orpheus romance I was unaware of. Also: Do the Right Thing SummerTime My Neighbor Totoro? High and Low (sp?) not sure if the title is right, but I remember everyone not in the house on the hill being sweaty messes Edit: not High and Low; I think I’m thinking of Stray Dog, same main actor though
Asummersdaydreamer14 I also pronounce it the way you do. I think the channel was trying to pronounce it in the same language/accent as the film (not English)
Just out of curiosity, what software do you use to make these videos? Specifically when it comes to the more clipart/animated segments of these videos????
Eric Rohmer made a load of great summer films. A Summer's Tale, of course, but also Pauline at the Beach, The Aviator's Wife and Claire's Knee. You can never get tired of Rohmer.
Also The Green Ray (titled Summer in the US), My Girlfriend's Boyfriend and La Collectioneuse.
tobi2731 yes how did I forget The Green Ray.
Yeah, he used to set his movies on the holyday so his characters could reflect on their own lives instead of being busy working...
PD Zombie that’s interesting. Makes sense
not to be basic and contemporary (in the royal ocean film society's comment section of all places) but after seeing "Call Me by Your Name" it will forever go in my personal list. American Graffiti has to be my favourite summer film, that last summer before the old gang splits up. That's this summer for me
beginning of this video is andy trying to push that summer is underrated somehow
I'm definitely in the minority but I prefer winter. The feeling of watching a good movie in a warm blanket can't be beaten
Summer is great
Summer fucking sucks. Only thing it’s good for is school being off, and that only applies for children. Above a certain age, it’s pretty much the worst.

Orfeu Negro is set in Brazil, in february, so it's our summer! You were tecnically not cheating!
Technically Orfeu Negro is a summer movie, but in the Southern Hemisphere
I think 'Call me by your name' has that warm and wonderful summer vibe to it as well
Hey Royal Ocean, I was wondering if you'd ever re-upload or unprivate your video The Joy of the Summer Blockbuster, as that was one of my favourites and I would really love to watch it again.
Co-sign
Yeah
absolutely love Avanti but I haven't watched it again in years. My summer film is probably A Room With a View
Gremlins 2 deserves its own essay.
Matinee is so fantastic and I wish more people had seen it. It was one of the movies that cemented my decision to become a filmmaker.
I saw it at a free midnight thing back in college. I thought it was cute. I did not know you can make a whimsical kids movie out of nuclear anxiety.
It’s definitely something fun
@@tatehildyard5332 I’m definitely watching before the end of the year

Yeah the film is amazing
"O.C. and Stiggs" - directed by the legendary Robert Altman. Not one of his better films, perhaps his worst... but still fun to watch
Hulot and Black Orpheus are amazing.
Hang-out-and-enjoy-life kind of movies.
Agreed

- Super 8
- Adventureland

Hulot and Black Orpheus are both in my top ten favorite movies of all time.
Great video as per usual! A few more lesser-known recommendations: Unrelated, Summer (2008, with Robert Carlyle), You're Dreaming Nicole and the Goob
Glad to know that you prefer Gremlins 2 over the first one. Gremlins 1 is good, but The New Batch, man, it gets better with each new viewing. I definitely need to see Matinee, though. It's top priority on my Joe Dante watchlist and I have yet to track it down on DVD.
It's a little pricey but Shout Factory has a great Blu-Ray of Matinee!
I would add Summertime starring Katherine Hepburn and directed by David Lean
My favourite month is winter. I don’t know, I just love the snow...
I recently watched Matinee and Gremlins 2 for the first time and I agree completely in how they are just Joe Dante at his peak.
Summertime by David lean is not only my favourite summer film but also my favourite david lean film

A BRIGHTER SUMMER DAY
Black Orfeus happens before carnival which is certainly winter time, which is certainly (or at least technically) summer in the southern hemisphere where its filmed. So no cheating!
To be fair to your selection of Black Orpheus, Lent is in late summer for Brazil (and the rest of the Southern Hemisphere).
I definitely think Jaws should be in here somewhere! Wouldn't truly feel like summer if I didn't watch that near the 4th of July!
To be honest that movie is way too popular though

Might be a regional thing-I’m from Midwest region of US-but I pronounce Euridice (sp?) as “yur rid eh see”. Almost thought there was another Orpheus romance I was unaware of.
Also:
Do the Right Thing
SummerTime
My Neighbor Totoro?
High and Low (sp?) not sure if the title is right, but I remember everyone not in the house on the hill being sweaty messes
Edit: not High and Low; I think I’m thinking of Stray Dog, same main actor though
Asummersdaydreamer14 I also pronounce it the way you do. I think the channel was trying to pronounce it in the same language/accent as the film (not English)
Just wait till you see Keaton's performance in Pajama Party haha
Great video man, as well as the others. Probably I'll check it out this Billy Wilder's flick I havent seen yet!
Watched the ridiculousness that is Bikini Beach. It was silly but I liked it. Probably watch more of these when I get a chance.
Please re-upload The Joy of the Summer Blockbuster
You forgot the most obvious one: Summertime by David Lean!
Wow, thanks! I also love summer and summer movies, looking forward to checking these out 👍
Also love the 7 year itch as a summer film because it’s about the dog days of summer
They were definitely to finish the year
Just out of curiosity, what software do you use to make these videos? Specifically when it comes to the more clipart/animated segments of these videos????
I hate that the links don't work for me! I was hyped for Matinee :(

Just came to make sure Mr. Hulot's Holiday was on the list, was not dissapointed.
