Probably my Type 38 Arisaka sporter re-cut to 6.5x55 or my Type 99 Arisaka sporter with a 7x57 barrel. I need the scope now, my eyes are bad. When I was a kid I bought a Mosin Nagant through the mail. I was so happy I did not have to use the shotgun again. Then I found out the only ammo available for it (Norma) cost more than I paid for the gun. I shot a 6 point with it. Had to lay it on a log because it was so long. It was a long shot. The deer was facing me and the front sight covered the whole deer.

I’m thinking an FR-8 might be a compelling option, which I guess technically falls under the Mauser 98 umbrella... but it’s quite light and handy by Mauser 98-pattern standards, and .308 is relatively ubiquitous.

Note that some Commercial hunting ammunition can be hard on an M1 Garand's gas system! I have some custom 98 and 95 Mauser Sporters in 7x57 Mauser and I took a nice Buck with the 98 Sporter two weeks ago. I've also killed Deer, Hogs, and Elk with a Commercial 98 Sporter in .30/06. I’d think the Springfield M1A would have been in that list seeing how 308/7.62x51 ammo is probably the most commonly found ammo anywhere, I’ve taken deer with both the M1A and M1 Garand, a little heavy to tote around but heck of a combo for deer and most North American game both with the most common ammo.

Biggest issue with mil surps, especially mauser pattern rifles is the battle sight setting. Many of them have a 300 meter bottom sight setting, meaning they're sighted way high at 100 yards and aren't adjustable further, without gunsmithing. My Swiss 1911 for example is 6" or more high at 100 yards. If legal I would use my 1903a3, but it's not here....
