Hello from Norway! In Norway, we have at least two great Folkmuseums! The one you saw in the video located in Oslo, and there is a second one in Lilllehammer, the Olympic Town north of Oslo. The one in Lillehammeralled Maihaugen. Directly translated, that means May Hill.. Both have magnificent buildings, dating back to 1300 ad at least. And both of them are free to roam after hours from 1700-2200 at night. So a very scenic park to stroll at the evenings. Really recommendabel! The smell of these buildings are the best. Wood and old tar. Norse buildings are built to stand against havy snow and harsh weather. So it is not small beams and fragile paperwalls. This is Norse craftmanship!

Lots of beautiful places in Norway. My favorite is Bergen, partly because i like bigger cities and also mountains, fjords and nature. You could spend a lifetime travelling from the south to the north having the best time of your life and still have things to see. Lots of really nice people too.
Edit: Ålesund is a place i could see myself live in also.

The nickname ‘Tigercity’ stem from the 19th century, as mentioned by others the poem by Bjørnson. During the industrialization many people came from small places and farms for work in Oslo. They were not used to the type of challenges they met in the city.

Holmenkollen is primarily a sports arena. The current jump record is about 150 meters, and there is a ski and biathlon stadium just next to it.

I love Oslo - especially the ship museums. The train line from Oslo to Bergen over the mountains is the most beautiful I have taken (and I've done a lot, including Trans-Siberian). Opposite the Opera House is a great place to stay - a moored ship called 'Innvik' whch is part cafe, part hostel, and in the hold is the performance space for Nordic Black Theatre. I will forever regret having to leave before their performance of 'Romeo and Juliet' in rap... possibly in Norwegian.

Yepp, we all learn to ski as small children. I started at 3. Starting my son this winter, he is four.
We also have a brand new Munch museum since this video was made, and a new national museum. The down town area is pretty small, so you can see most by walking around. I also recommend going on the tram. Just going around Oslo on a tram is easily my favourite thing to do. ❤ Just drive around and look at people and the city. Oslo is a great City for art...actually probably one of the best in the world. As mentioned in the video the Vigelandpark is the worlds largest sculpture park by one artist, and it is amazing. The Ekeberg sculpture park is much more contemporary and also absolutely amazing, and this one gives you a great trip into the nature as well. I would also recommend the cute Princess Ingrid Alexandra sculpture Park in the Royal Palace Gardens (sculptures designed by kids) and also the amazing Roseslottet (the rose castle) open air art exhibition om the "top" of Oslo by the amazing painter Vebjørn Sand. An absolute stunning experience as well is the Emanuel Vigeland mausoleum, which is a large indoor tomb with walls covered with the most intriguing paintings! But of course, also the brand new National Museum has tons of amazing art, both classic and contemporary and it is probably one of the overall best art museums in the world. The Astrup Fernley museum is another interesting art museum I recommend checking out which also has a small sculpture park (and a beach) right outside of it. But my favourite thing to do is walk around and discover all the great street art- and Oslo has some very nice murals indeed.

That video is some years old. The Munch Museum has moved from its former location on Tøyen, where it was right next to the Botanical Garden and the Zoological Museum and Geological Museum. It is now next to The Oslo Opera, in a new building that many people thought was the ugliest building imaginable. I think we've gotten more used to it now, and I guess it's ok. Strangely, The Botanical Garden was mentioned, but not the Zoological Museum and Geological Museum within the garden. I never got tired of visiting these two museums and the garden when I lived in Oslo. The walk along Akerselva starts or ends at Maridalsvannet, the large lake just north of the city. I used to walk along the river and around the lake, which is plenty for one day. You can watch my photos from my years in Oslo on my Flickr.

Hi, Norwegian living in Oslo here. I agree totally with everything in this video, but have a few things to note
This video is clearly a bit old, as of now, the Munch museum has moved to a new location down by where the Opera is. The building looks horrible, but at least the art on the inside is pretty XD
The viking ship museum is currently closed for renovations. Not sure when you guys are coming here, but worth noting that the viking ship museum might not be available
In addition to the places that was mentioned in the video, I'd like to give a shout out to the museum of modern technology which is really fun
Also, while it's not the size and grandure of the Stavechurches or Oslo Cathedral, my favorite church in town is Sagene Church, a beautiful church made in brown brick with copper roof, nestled in the middle of Oslo City, worth a look
Lastly, the reason why Oslo is known as the city of tigers, is because our famous writer Henrik Ibsen once wrote about Oslo as a place where you had to be strong to survive and live like a tiger, or be eaten and destroyed by the tigers. Kind of how that whole if you can make it here you can make it anywhere mentality that New York has? Only a bit more vicious
Anyway I hope you will have a great time here in Norway, bring plenty of layers of clothes and stay away from the souvenier shops, they will rob you blind.
(PS: I wish the bengals all the best in the upcoming season, except when it matters, go ravens)

The whole "babies are born with skis on their fett" saying used to be true-ish, and don't worry, it's about cross country skiing, not slalom, so fewer scary hills to go down.
When I was a kid in the 80s, we had lots of snow in the winters, in the southern-ish parts of Norway. These days we get far less snow, so skiing locally is less do-able, so not as much skiing. Our kids do know how to ski, but do it far less than my friends and I did. And that goes for an increaingly large part of the country, but when you get further north there is more snow, and many of our best skiers are from the middle or northern parts of the country.
We had a cross country ski trail that went for miles and miles that started 30 meters from our door where I grew up, and every Sunday pretty much all the families in the area would go skiing for 2-4 hours, eating lunch and having a camp fire out in the woods.. Where we live now there used to be a ski trail every winter just a few hundred meters from our door, but the last five years or so years there hasn't been enough snow for them to make the trail.
Luckily we do have a cross country snow park not too far from us, right next to the school our kids go to, where they run snow cannons as soon as it dips below freezing, so they do get to do some skiing in the winter, and our youngest kid does cross country skiing as a sport. Kids from other schools in our city don't have that luxury though, so I imagine they do far less skiing, and it's no longer the norm for all families to have skis and equipment for the whole family.
And as for the viking ships. One of the most famous ones is from my hometown of Sandefjord, 1,5 hours south of Oslo, and has the same name as our family name, the Gokstad ship. It was excavated close to the farm my family had back then, and apparently my great grandfather helped in the excavation. The burial mound it was found in is still there, but the ship is now located in the viking ship museum in Oslo.

Our tour guide said we were lucky when we walked by the city hall because about 4 days prior the entire area was off limits to pedestrians as the UN was having a meeting there. When you guys were talking about the nature, it made me think about my tour. To get to Holmenkollen you drive by a bunch of houses, but once you're up there, it doesn't feel like you're near the city. "Tigerstaden" = TigerCity got its nickname after Knut Hamsuns novel "Sult" = "Hunger" written in 1890. He was a country boy moving to Oslo or Christiania as it was called then. He was poor and hungry and the city was big, frightening and unforgiving and he described the city as something dangerous which would eat you.
Hence he nicknamed Oslo/Christiania the TigerCity.

Not correct. Tigerstaden is a nickname for Oslo, inspired by Bjørnstjerne Bjørnson's poem Sidste Sang (Last Song - later called Godt Mod) from 1870. It is a name that refers to Oslo as a dangerous and merciless metropolis. In the poem, Bjørnson depicts a battle between a country horse and a city tiger. The expression was quickly adopted in newspapers.

I went to Oslo about 5 years ago. Absolutely amazing place. Perfect mix or rural and city. It was so clean, too. Really liked a lot of the street art of the sides of buildings, the history, the people. The architecture was amazing with a mixture of old and new.
It was very, very, very expensive though. Well worth it. They have these amazing boat trips to take and you can go island hopping. Luckily for us, it's only an hour on the plane.

She’s a foreigner with a heavy accent when trying to speak in Norwegian, so it’s not necessarily how we’d say it. And we have hundreds if not thousands of dialects which also makes this challenging for non native speakers in terms of pronunciation.

The street you stopped and said you wanted to live on (you really don’t 😆), was my communte for two years. Walking the main street (Karl Johans gate) from the vincinity of parliament, past Slottet (royal castle), and up the hill to my weekday apartment. I’m from a different part of Norway, so it felt a bit surreal to walk in those surroundings.

I love Oslo. Was born there, but my parents got work in Trondheim so we moved when I was only a few months old. I've been living in Oslo as an adult, but now I'm back in Trondheim. If you ever come visit Trondheim, I'll give you a guided tour as I used to work in the Nidaros Cathedral, and have a major interest in the history of the town (founded in 997 ad, but people have lived here a lot longer than that.)

Norway has a breathtaking nature, the fjords, the mountains, the waterfalls, the cities, everything is great, you can make the world's spectacular and best ship travel to the north and in summer the Sun don't go down. I love Norway and the other countries in Scandinavia. The great advantage there in summer is, that it isn't so hot, like in Middle or South Europe, it's perfect for travel.

That video was a little old and much has happened since. Munch museum has moved by the opera in a purpose-built building to preserve the art from 4 different museums and holds more than 300.000 items.
If in Oslo during winter, you should go on the toboggan ride from Frognerseteren and go skiing/snowboarding at Tryvann. In the summer it's a climb park and Frognerseteren has the best Norwegian waffles with the best view of Oslo. It's a small theme park just outside Oslo, "Tusenfryd". "Blå" is a very nice bar located on aker river and offers free concerts every sunday.
Viking ship museum is closed for renovation until 2026. At the botanical garden there is also a large museum, naturhistorisk museum (nature-historic, environment and geological museum). You need to try the hotdogs at "Syverkiosken" - I promise 😊
Also surprised she didn't mention any of the streeetfood places or food marked (Mathallen) at Grünerløkka. Try Oslo street food court and street food court Bjørvika. Also the new public library is a treat!
Plenty of stuff to do in Oslo.

The viewing platform of the ski museum is also a ski jump. Skiers set off fro the top, and try to get as far as possible. At holmenkollen the record is about 140 meters (1.5 football fields), and the world record is 253.5 meters (2.5 football fields), but set in a bigger hill.

I went on a school trip to Norway in 1978, sailed to Bergen and stayed in Voss. Fantastic scenery, the fjords are amazing.
I have also worked in Reykjavik in Iceland, Turku and Jyväskylä in Finland. We go to Helsinki every year, well worth a visit, one great place is the Temppeliaukion Kirkko, or the Church in the Rock. We have also been to Copenhagen, beautiful city but expensive. There is a Viking ship museum at Roskilde. I've not been to Sweden yet (apart from changing planes in Stockholm.) Oslo and Stockholm are on our list to complete my 5 Nordic Capitals. This has given great ideas of what to do. Can't wait for the next one on Stockholm. If you want to know about Helsinki let me know.

Yes we all learn to do cross country skiing since little, but it’s a stereotype that we all move it or are any good at it. You can say sufficient or average. I hated it, and stopped when I was old enough to refuse anymore skii trips during easter and winter break. Fun fact: it was our indigenous people the Sámi who actually invented cross country skiing as well as the old traditional bindings used, and their ancestors the Proto Finns migrated to Scandinavia from Siberia Asia during the Last Ice Age distant related to all 1st nation/indigenous peoples of America. They also brought blond hair to northern Europe. Of course the Vikings appropriated it, and now X hundreds of years later the modern Norwegian feign to be the originators.
