Your mention Singapore contradicts in its policies, eg, gambling and stop at 2 kids policies. But a lot of these policies are constantly reviewed for its practicality. Why in the 70s, the govt wants to stop at 2, cos there is not enough educational, housing, amongst other infrastructure to support a growing population. However, as years gone by, infrastructure is ready and people these days hv so much lesser kids, maybe one. The good thing about this govt is it never too ashamed to tweet its policy. Casino too, yes, it's bad but for the long haul, to boost tourism, it has to make a choice in view of its limited land size and natural offerings. At the same time out in place systems to manage habits of locals, eg $100 for locals whom wants to gamble. Even without the home casino, the locals are already driving into Malaysia and onboard cruise ships to gamble. This govt is very practical and it's about the survival of this tiny island which most people think it would not hv survived after being dispelled from Malaysia.

as a singaporean, i’m learning a lot more about MBS here than from other sources 😂 i guess that’s how the government sanitizes us? there’s hardly any (or if any?) advertisements on MBS, so it’s easily “forgotten” by regular singaporeans if we don’t think about it
Chi Ling From my observation, Singaporeans aren’t really bothered about things like this. Majority probably don’t know the country’s history. Information is there and publicly available.
Adam Alexandre i guess that fits into our prototypical singaporean image of “just busy working, don’t have the time to be bothered by other stuff”? :) but to my knowledge, yeah, singaporeans aren’t bothered by the casino in MBS anymore; it has become our singapore icon and our pride (a bit of a stretch to say this??) haha but i don’t think that majority of us don’t know our history, per se; all of us have to go through many years of formal education that teaches us about singapore history :) it’s just that all specific details can’t be covered

Claire Lim first, it is not illegal to consume bubble gum. It’s just illegal to sell it. You can order it off any online shopping site Second, excuse me what? The flushing law? That is not a thing. Besides, how the hell would it be enforced?
Singaporeans have been overly desensitised to authoritarianism to know what true freedom tastes like. Whenever an outsider with a fresh perspective based on what they have observed in their own (I believe more freedom loving country that actually gives a shit about human rights to self determination), many in Singapore are just too quickly jump to the conclusion that they are being hyperbolic and misleading. Much like the allegory of the cave, Singaporeans have become too restless to fight for change and as a result will never see the sun even when told of its existence. @@pointlesssentience3987 i know we lack a lot of freedoms in singapore. state controlled media, banning of opposition political advertising, etc. but bringing up archaic laws that for all intents and purposes don't affect us in any way is misleading. i'm not denying that singapore is a flawed democracy that prioritises other things over freedom. i know when things are hyperbolic and misleading because i live in singapore and know what it's like. i can make my own judgements about my country; i don't need an outsider who isn't as familiar with it to do that for me.

I remember enter the cruise with my relatives and it start it's journey from Pasir Gudang Port in Johore, spending one night gambling in the middle of the sea, then the cruise will go back to the Port early in the morning and we go home. Yes, it's weird. The inside of the cruise looks so beautiful and rich, full of mahagony woods interior like those Titanic ship, only different is it is full with gambling machine. And i remember that i'm buying a chocolate in that ship using a "dollar" currency, but i can't tell if it was Singapore dollar. Untill now, i always wondering if those gambling ship is Malaysian or Singaporean ships.
I went there twice, passed through the same building twice and only noticed the casino the second time. Frankly, people like me dont know Singapore for its gambling scene. We know it for its tourism, and its a really good distraction from the casinos (which i found out when i was going to *exit* the building)

Second, excuse me what? The flushing law? That is not a thing. Besides, how the hell would it be enforced?
Singaporeans have been overly desensitised to authoritarianism to know what true freedom tastes like. Whenever an outsider with a fresh perspective based on what they have observed in their own (I believe more freedom loving country that actually gives a shit about human rights to self determination), many in Singapore are just too quickly jump to the conclusion that they are being hyperbolic and misleading. Much like the allegory of the cave, Singaporeans have become too restless to fight for change and as a result will never see the sun even when told of its existence. Which when you think about it, is perhaps the PAPs singular greatest achievement

I'm from Malaysia. Talking about gambling and Singapore, i had one story to share. This happen when i was still a kids.
I had this vivid memory as a kids where i'm follow one of my relatives to a very large and rich gambling cruise across the waterway between Johore (Malaysia) and Singapore.

10 miles is about 16.1km.The problem with that is that claim is that Singapore is VERY SMALL,only 50km horizontally and 20km vertically at their maximium. So that is definitely not accurate whatsoever or a huge amount of people will be filing for bankruptcy in Singapore everyday.Because of how small Singapore is,even 16.1km is considered quite far when considering the size of Singapore it's 1/3 of Singapore horizontally. Also other than how small Singapore is,another factor that effects view of distance is that not everyone own cars they are extremely expensive the cheapest new cars costs around SGD$100,000(USD$72,000).I don't think that claim is accurate at all when talking about Singapore.I am from Singapore btw.
