- “They were very well aware that this was going to cause a storm, but they thought that that was a significant enough win from the change, for them to be able to weather this storm.”
Labour MPs see Natalie Elphicke’s defection as a “win” for the Party, says Caroline Wheeler.

It's not a win for people who want change
It makes no difference really. She's not standing as an MP next election.
You have to be paid handsomely to believe it’s a win for Labour.
Yes opinion polls since weds show labour s poll lead even higher, but keep your head in the sand and BS yourself
Elphicke thinks Labour’s policy on immigration would be more effective than the Tories’ in achieving the priorities of her constituents.
If the constituents of Dover who previously trusted her to represent them can be persuaded to trust her judgement on the party which would best serve those interests at the next election, would that be beneficial to Labour?
It’s not a question of whether YOU trust her… it’s whether Dover voters trust her to go along with her advice and her decision to join Labour.
If you want to tell them they’re wrong - you’re shooting yourself in the foot on a point of principle.
Personally, I’d prefer to follow a Labour Party which has both feet, rather than insists on limping to the Left [and consequently walks in circles and gets nowhere…]
@@xanthias2001 You mean both feet on the right with a pinky toe slightly to the middle.
I despise Elphicke and everything she stood for but as she`s standing down before the GE I can stomach her joining labour as a massive kick in the teeth for slimy Sunak
There may well be a something that she is given by Starmer, in exchange for her defection.
Weird way of looking at it. Starmer is more slimy than Sunak as this move shows.
It’s not your opinion that counts , sunak is 30 points behind starmer in approval rating s …. And a sentence on a TH-cam chat won’t change that
@@Gary-le7dz it doesn't make me wrong. You don't get slimier than Blair
@@Gary-le7dz you don't say , fascinating 🤣
Her acceptance finally convinces me I am no longer a Labour voter. Red Tory's and Blue Tory's, there is no damn difference any more.
Its a tactical move, she is not joining the Labour Party, she is standing down so it is purely tactical, though I wonder what is in it for her!!
The fact that she feels more comfortable politically says alot
All you need to consider is that the M.P. at the sharp end of Fishy's key policy, i.e. "Stop the boats" has decided he hasn't got a clue what he's doing, and Starmer has the right idea. Everything else is irrelevant, as she's standing down soon.
If this is a win for Labour they set very low standards
By using the very low standards of this Tory mp for their tactical advantage?
Are you serious? Very low standards? Please tell me you aren't a Tory! lol
The Murdoch press giving a positive spin for Starmer the chosen one.
Wheeler is delusional and thinks we're all idiots. Anyone who knows anything about Elphicke knows that she's just an opportunist who holds no moal conviction. She's more right wing than even Sunuak, and if Starmer had a back bone he wouldn't have accepted her. Starmer's constant flip flopping on positions is even worse.
Going to be a tough 10 years for you.
@@nicksimmons7234 everyone pays tax?
Her housing policy document could have been written by someone on the centre left
But this is Murdoch media and Starmer can do no wrong for them just like Blair.
It is not a flip flopping of positions. He doesn't endorse her values he's using her to promote his immigration policies, which he has never flip flopped on. Do try and see the picture.
Oh, now that Caroline Wheeler and the rest of the establishment drones want to tell us that having more right wing basket cases in the Labour party is a good thing, actually. I'm totally sold on the idea
The f*** is Caroline Wheeler?
If he had any integrity he would join the Tory party rather than bring the Tory party to our party
Our party? You have a monopoly on it do you sean?
@@annishilcock4587 I don't. I have voted for it at every election since 1987 and posted leaflets for it since 1979. I have been jumping up and down in anticipation of the upcoming election. It's a right wing coup
@@annishilcock4587 I'm sorry. I mean the party I have voted for since 1987 and delivered leaflets for since 1979 and have been jumping up and down for in anticipation of the upcoming election. I suppose I'll just have to get out of the habit of calling it ours. This is the biggest shift in British politics in my life
@@seanoconnor8843let it go. Leave it. It's not the Labour Party. The likes of Starmer rely on your loyalty to what it was and what it should be to get away with taking it more to the right than the Tories.
@@clivet3252 it's the timing that really worries me. This is not right at all. For the good it will do I've written to my MP who happens to be George Galloway but so close to the election I doubt he can affect anything. I asked him who I should vote for apart from him. He's not my cup of tea
How low, can Starmer go ?
As low as a snakes belly
Rats jumping off the sinking ship onto a floating piece of wood, which is what Labour is . No idea what or where it’s going .
In American politics if a Trumpy senator or congressman were to switch parties, denounce Trump policies and declare voting for Biden. It would be hailed as a victory for President Biden and the Democratic Party. Sane Americans are hoping Republican politicians and voters will change their minds. The British pearl clutching about Starmer’s coup is baffling on this side of the Atlantic.
It’s just theatre politics no more.
It’s still a loss for the people. Doesn’t matter who gets in this country is finished. Bad times are coming 😢
when they have t explain why its a ‘win’ it isn't
Aload.
It’s not a win wen people want change!!!!! Change is not the bunch of failed MPs from the opposite side
It's a clear winning vote.Starmer want to be PM n has good advisors
Massive win for Labour. Why is everyone focussing on this woman's odious political background...?? We need to look at the strategic political capital this defection provides Labour. It supports and builds the narrative Sunak is a useless leader and PM who can't even hang on to his own MPs who, like rats, are deserting the sinking ship. Labour can continue to sell this to the electorate right up to the next election, long after the name and details of this woman have been forgotten. Labour need to use every asset available to crush Sunak. Winning the next election is Labour's only priority...everything else is just noise...
But what good is Labour winning the election at all costs to ordinary people? You think Starmer is a good PM? If you have no integrity and no foundations then you're nothing.

Who is she anyway? A person who is only swapping sides because she needs a job.
He talks about stopping the boats but he doesn’t say how he is going to remove the ones here NOW
What where he said he process the claims?
You clearly didn’t listen very well.
@@nicksimmons7234you clearly didn't write very well - what on earth do you mean?

Labour and their ‘policies’ have always attracted the flies!
Namastee.
Tell it how it is. Labour will win anyway. She obviously isn't foolish. She wants to be on the winning side.
Are we all ready for a reenactment of Blair?? Good luck everyone!!
She's stepping down after the next GE...
Because the last 14 years have been an absolute blast, right?
No of course not, but Blair is to blame, he started the ball rolling
I could never vote for a turncoat what's to stop her changing back after the elections

The people of Dover are too smart to be fooled by turncoats.

I've been there, they're not very smart at all.
@@annishilcock4587 She will be stepping down at this coming general election.
@@annishilcock4587: correct. It’s why she stepped down, otherwise the Dover electorate would have eviscerated her.
@@stewartbunting3568 I do know that, see my comment
