  • “They were very well aware that this was going to cause a storm, but they thought that that was a significant enough win from the change, for them to be able to weather this storm.”
Labour MPs see Natalie Elphicke’s defection as a “win” for the Party, says Caroline Wheeler.

Elphicke thinks Labour’s policy on immigration would be more effective than the Tories’ in achieving the priorities of her constituents.
If the constituents of Dover who previously trusted her to represent them can be persuaded to trust her judgement on the party which would best serve those interests at the next election, would that be beneficial to Labour?
It’s not a question of whether YOU trust her… it’s whether Dover voters trust her to go along with her advice and her decision to join Labour.
If you want to tell them they’re wrong - you’re shooting yourself in the foot on a point of principle.
Personally, I’d prefer to follow a Labour Party which has both feet, rather than insists on limping to the Left [and consequently walks in circles and gets nowhere…]

In American politics if a Trumpy senator or congressman were to switch parties, denounce Trump policies and declare voting for Biden. It would be hailed as a victory for President Biden and the Democratic Party. Sane Americans are hoping Republican politicians and voters will change their minds. The British pearl clutching about Starmer’s coup is baffling on this side of the Atlantic.

Massive win for Labour. Why is everyone focussing on this woman's odious political background...?? We need to look at the strategic political capital this defection provides Labour. It supports and builds the narrative Sunak is a useless leader and PM who can't even hang on to his own MPs who, like rats, are deserting the sinking ship. Labour can continue to sell this to the electorate right up to the next election, long after the name and details of this woman have been forgotten. Labour need to use every asset available to crush Sunak. Winning the next election is Labour's only priority...everything else is just noise...
