    The problem is, if your target demographic is non watch nerds, you really have to stay under $1,000. Regular people aren't going to spend $2,400 on a watch. Some folks on Reddit ran down Dave's manufacturer. It's estimated that his cost is $250-$300 per watch. If he would have doubled that and sold these for $500-$600, he would have cleaned up. Instead, he decided to charge ten times his cost. He deserves the hate that he's getting.

    That uhhh noise at the intro is borderline frightening. But yeah the watch company asked him if he wants it work all the time or one you have to wind up everyday. He wanted quartz but added one “you have to wind”. So it doesn’t sound like he even knew or knows the difference between quartz and mechanical because you don’t HAVE to wind it, I mean it says self winding right on the website, yet I don’t think he realizes it winds itself.

    I declare this be retitled "Portnoy's Complaint." Man, those watches, they're about as unique as a Halmark card. They're the Wonder bread of the watch world, a Hanes tee-shirt, a tepid glass of water. I've had vanilla scented candles excite me more. If my homely high school librarian got together and banged Mitch McConnell and somehow a watch came out, this would be it. Jesus man, they make Mido look like exotic horology. Those aren't watches, they're sedatives.

    The majority of watch buyers aren’t watch enthusiasts and have no interest in the smaller details that excite we of the watch community. That’s why TAG doesn’t care about why we find them so frustrating, they’re making mountains of cash out of the muggles.

    • @WhoIsCG
      @WhoIsCG ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I agree with the first sentiment for sure. As I've started to get into the "watch hardo" world and began to understand marketing doesn't ALWAYS mean quality I've noticed one thing that Portnoy doesn't understand.
      People are going to buy a TAG because they have name recognition. I actually don't "HATE" TAG, I just think they can tend to be overpriced but at least the normal person will recognize a TAG and it has a status symbol. Which is why people will continue to buy a TAG. However, Microbrands that try to push the same price WAY over quality, don't tend to do well because people aren't going to spend 3k on a Dave Portnoy watch just because. At least not anytime soon.

    • @timothyjones9804
      @timothyjones9804 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@WhoIsCG Personally, I think there are many watches in the TAG catalogue that deserve to be lusted after. Some of the Carrera chronograph, Autavia and Monaco offerings are truly gorgeous with pretty decent movements (I'm not one to be overly critical of the whole in house/bought in nonsense, a good movement is a good movement).
      My point about TAG is simply that they've recognised their market, which isn't the type of person who watches TH-cam watch vids. I mean, who in their right mind would want to spend a lot of cash on one of those horrendous Super Mario watches, I thought some of the F1's were ugly!
      There are lot of people who will love the brand recognition, as you rightfully say, but while the brick watches are horribly overpriced, many will view the Dave association as equally if not more valuable (to them).
      I don't see it myself, but it takes all sorts and I wouldn't be surprised if this new venture proves to be a success. If you're determined enough you can sell any old crap to a section of the population, after all, the flat earth society doesn't seem to be diminishing.

Being able to say something is Made in America requires much more commitment to actually manufacturing a product here.

His goal was to create a product with astronomical margins and sell said product to Portnoy/Barstool fans who *DONT* know about the product they’re buying. The whole goal here was not to create and sell a decent watch for enthusiasts. It was “how can we make as much money as possible from our fanbase?”. The issue I have is the gaslighting.

    The main problem with his whole shtick is that he markets it as something for people that aren't watch people but non-watch people think $300 is a lot for a watch. Actual watch people would pay $2400 for a watch but at that point they wouldn't buy a $350 quartz shitter or a $650 generic stelita when you can get an entry level tudor or longines (as examples) for that price. The brick watch company is beyond an identity crisis, it's full on backwards. If you're going to make a watch for non-watch people it has to be affordable for the non-watch person which is sub $300 usually and sub $600 for the higher end. That's the most I think anyone I know that doesn't know anything about watches would spend on a watch cause they don't care about the movement or anything it's really just a fashion accessory. Watch people are willing to spend money on any level for great watches but $2400 for what would otherwise be a $350 quartz or a $550 stelita is pathetic.

At this point, he should just pretend everything is sold out. Then make another emergency press conference telling everyone he is right. Then see if he can drum up some demand. Portnoy is one of those 1 in 100,000,000 got lucky at something he was passionate about (Barstool) and made a ton of money. This does not make him a 'good' businessman. For the vast majority of people (including the rich and entrepreneurial), sound advice is stay in your lane, or in closely connected tangent industries.
    A dirty little secret of most 'successful' entrepreneurs is that it is a lot easier to make money when you have lots of money to begin with. Either (1) they can work in a space that has a decent barrier to entry (for example property development), or/and related (2) they have sufficient working capital to run the business during the tough first few years. Moving into a completely different industry (especially one you clearly don't understand) is a good way to lose money consistently.
    This watch venture will fail, or, he will keep for a few years lose money every year, and then sell off 'at a big profit' and wait for his applause. This big profit, which he will never disclose, will effectively be a small to medium loss when carry-forward losses are taken into account. Hell, it may even be a tax dodge.

    Just can’t justify spending that kind of money on a quartz watch I own a few micro brands that have Swiss automatic movement. My Tsao is assembled in the US has a custom rotor and awesome customer service and is 1/3 the price. Plenty of micro brands with similar movements that are much much more affordable. They aren’t bad looking just way over priced but maybe non-watch hardos that know any better will buy them.

    Why anyone this LESS interested in watches would want to invest into an actual custom watch company is BAFFLING. I think his ego and pride got in the way when Shinola rejected him and he decided to do it on his own ala Larry David (coffee shop episode).

    I checked the website after watching this video. You can tell El Presidente did little to no due diligence on the go to market strategy with whatever company he partnered with. The watches look absolutely horrible. Like something you would find on Amazon or Ali Express. The website is equally as crappy. This company will fail before it gets off the ground.

    Love your channel but Rolex does not have a lengthy track record of “in house” movements. They started off as a watch assembler buying cases and movements off other companies and only became “in house” ( I stretch that definition as they bought a separate company) about 20 years ago - still don’t make everything last time I looked either. Apart from that, I agree with everything you said. Putting “ no battery needed” as a selling point in some of his sale descriptions speaks to the ignorance of his intended market, in that sense at least they are comparable with Rolex.

    • @thetimeteller
      @thetimeteller  ปีที่แล้ว

      I think you’re referring to Aegler movements. A manufacturer that exclusively produced movements for… Rolex, and Rolex ONLY all the way up until Rolex absorbed them. So… nice try I guess. 🤣

    • @louisbrandt5386
      @louisbrandt5386 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yep, so how was that in house then? Their movements were “outsourced” to Aegler, a completely “separate company” up until they bought them and still technically having a separate legal identity.

    • @louisbrandt5386
      @louisbrandt5386 ปีที่แล้ว

      Getting another company, no matter how many clients or contracts they have, to make your movements is not in house my friend. You can stretch the definition if it makes you and some of your fans feel better as you have skin in the game but I am not that gullible. Still, great content - I really enjoy your videos.

    Aren't bricks what house's are built of 😉. Go to Christopher Ward, at that price you could get 3 beautiful watches or one of the sh21 in house movement watches. Christopher Ward nowadays are not really a micro brand any more. They are growing at he'll of a rate but there prices are still ultra reasonable. They are very open about there pricing strategy 3 x cost of manufacture. Brick watch company need to bring there price in line with others to stand much of a chance in this world.

  • @TheDesius

    For that price you can get a quartz Cartier tank. I think he literally has done 0 research. And Timex makes automatic USA made watches for $800 so that also cannot be the reason of the high price
